The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Iowa Supreme Court ruled that a law requiring a 72-hour waiting period for women seeking an abortion was an unconstitutional burden.
That happened in Iowa? One of the biggest religious states? I'm surprised.

Is this sort of thing specifically a Right-wing phenomenon online? Like, I don't think I've seen the reverse of this, except maybe once (and that was more of an official courtroom kind of deal). Why is it that you never see much openly Liberal-aligned political videos getting popular enough to get recommended? (because I'm assuming they were only recommended because of popularity) Is it just the Alt-Right crowd religiously viewing these videos over and over and over while their non-crazy counterparts (on both ends of the political spectrum) go relatively ignored?

Its a bit of every thing, the left absolutely fails in the media department, our lack of a online presence with charismatic speakers is one of our greatest failings because it means that peoples first exposture to these important topics online is almost always the alt-right.

Combined with this, you have what you said, they watch these videos religiously, I know a couple alt-righters sadly, and every time a new video is made, it is being shared multiple times that day amongst each-other, which while I cant say for sure how Googles sorting works, does look good to something thats whole job is to sell add space, so I wouldn't be suprised if this prioritizes them.

Third, some of the recomendations are flat out paid for by the content creators, and conservitives have started paying specificly to put there adds in front of liberal videos.... seriously the people that said we need to invest in counters are onto something, because we are loosing the war here because we just dont fight back.

Lastly, as mentioned on the previous page, these people spam there videos with tags like history and science which are broad use, specificly so they will be recomended on every thing.

....

Its not ONE thing, nothing is really ever ONE thing, its a combination of all these mixing together to form a cesspool.

3/ The Department of Justice is drafting a plan to overhaul the U.S. asylum policy, which would prevent people from getting asylum if they entered the country illegally. It would also make it extremely difficult for Central Americans to qualify for asylum, and would codify an opinion written by Jeff Sessions that restricts asylum for victims of domestic abuse and gang violence. (Vox)

I'm normally a very sedate, almost passive person. But this... the only time I've gotten more pissed off on a deep level was after hearing Trump advocate for torture.

This part especially: "Under the plan, people would be barred from getting asylum if they came into the US between ports of entry and were prosecuted for illegal entry." Wouldn't that violate the due process clause, as just the accusation of illegal entry would be enough to disqualify someone from asylum status?

Obama had basically just told Trump to rename Obamacare to Trumpcare or whatever and take all the credit, just keep the damn thing intact. I'm somewhat surprised Trump didn't go for it. We know how much he loves to claim Obama's successes as his own.

Oh, and Anthony Kennedy's son works for the bank giving Trump a huge loan when others wouldn't give him a dime.

How are we only finding out about this now? Also, I think John Grisham is reaching a bit with this new plot twist.

On the subject of New Atheists, they target religious conservatives insofar as some of their favorite religious targets are creationists and the like. Granted, creationists are extreme, and easy targets to knock down and look smart while doing it. It's not the conservativism they seem to have an issue with, it's the religion.

That quote from Trump sounds like an implied threat to the son. If Kennedy hadn't been threatening America with his retirement pretty much since Trump's election, I'd strongly suspect a cause-to-effect link between the two news...

Also, not sure where you're going with the "second attempted feud with Taylor Swift" thing because the person who was exposed as having fabricated the feud was...Taylor Swift. A fact I am happy to say that I only know because I watched a review of the terrible, terrible song she wrote about it.

I don't think it's an accident that Kennedy's retiring now.

If it had been after a hypothetical Blue Wave, Democrats might have been able to block his replacement.

New Atheists have a right to preach (ironic term) because if they believe they know the truth of the universe then they have the right to preach that. The same for people who believe in their own faith or belief about the universe. Humans should always seek the truth and build their beliefs around that.

Mind you, yes, they are no less prone to Islamophobia or sexism or anything of the similar mindset. One of my female associates who went through an anti-religion period joined up only to be confused and disappointed it was less Star Trek utopianism and "white male guys making gender essentialist talk while laughing about ignorant brown people." Which may have just been the group she joined but led to the funny joke, "If I wanted that, I would have stayed with my church."

Mind you, it took her years to find out I was deeply religious (albeit "weird")

Can a replacement for Kennedy still be bogged down until after the elections?

I don't believe so.

Donald is celebrating his six month anniversary of passing his tax cuts act.

Six months after our TAX CUTS, more than 6 MILLION workers have received bonuses, pay raises, and retirement account contributions. #Tax Cutsand Jobs Act

According to the US Census website, the most recent estimate of total population is 325,719,178. So, if 6,000,000 people have benefited in the way his tweet states, that's 1.8% of the US population or 3.8% of the civilian employed force (159,729,000).

In the video, as well as boasting about repealing the individual mandate, he also mentions a 'typical family of four' earning $75,000 will see their tax reduced by $2,000 or more. I double-checked the US Census Bureau's figures. He's using the $75,062 figure for 'family households' although the publication's definitions indicate that Donald is wrong about the definition of what that figure applies to (Footnote, page 7):

A family household is a household maintained by a householder who is related to at least one other person in the household by birth, marriage, or adoption and includes any unrelated individuals who may be residing there.

Edit: Note to self: Americans use dollars, not pounds. Get your monetary symbols right!

I think he did it by choice, I'll believe he was forced when there's sufficient evidence to support it.

I just assumed Kennedy chose now to go because the Republicans would hope that an SC seat will encourage Republican voters to turn out in November to counter any attempts at a Blue Wave with a Red Wave. That, and it doesn't make any sense for Republicans to wait and therefore risk a Blue Wave interfering with their ability to choose their SC without opposition, of course.

As I've said before, it's a mistake to assume that Trump just cares about getting his name in the papers and building monuments to his ego. He is absolutely an ideological threat, not just a glory hound.

He didn't go for it because he legitimately hates the ACA. Just like how he's separating families and fighting for his wall because he legitimately hates Mexicans. It is a myth that Trump doesn't have an agenda or a platform. He absolutely does.

Lowering taxes, screwing the poor, hurting non-whites, these are things that Trump will do regardless of the fame or ego boosts. Because they're things he cares about. A Trump who just wanted to sack and pillage Washington would be substantially less harmful.

In my experience, at least, whenever I watch a video by a feminist (or any progressive, really), I will get recommended shitty alt-right "takedown" videos for like two weeks.
