Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Have your paperwork in order and you should be fine.
They detain a lot
of people that they shouldn't, and frankly there's nothing you can do about that. For better or for worse, actually being a US citizen versus a green card holder doesn't seem to matter, they just are happy to detain whomever.
So... yay?
But realistically, ICE won't even factor in. It's Customs and Border Security whom you'll deal with, and you should be fine.

ICE is the people who try to find people here illegally and detain/deport them. They're functionally irrelevant to you. Well, exactly as irrelevant to you as they are to me, an American-born white-passing guy.
It's Customs and Border Protection you'll be dealing with, and that shouldn't be an issue, really.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.... well, keep in mind plenty of people wind up getting detained even without having any paperwork wrong.
... so again, yay?
... seriously, we do not need ICE. Even if they do their actual job right (getting rid of illegal immigrants), it's genuinely a bad thing. They're basically the epitome of "feelings don't care about your facts." Illegal immigrants are an objective boon to the country. On average commit fewer crimes (thus technically driving down the crime rate), pay taxes and don't use entitlements, perform menial labor for low cost thus actually helping the farmers and poorest of our country by keeping food prices low.
We've noticed. You're good.

Okay, real talk, why? Other than being alarmist, what does that achieve?
Hate to be a cliche (that's a lie, I love it) but caving in and uprooting your life because of fear-mongering is frankly "letting them win."

Nothing that isn't better suited to other branches of the DHS or even local law enforcement. The sole thing that's exclusively ICE? It's a bad thing.
ICE is a child agency of DHS, so ICE handling something is DHS handling something. If CBP intercepts arms or illegal goods being shipped into the country ICE is the agency that investigates, and so on.
We created a seperate customs agency because the “everybody and local law enforcement” approach to customs enforcement was found to be insufficient when our LE scheme was evaluated after 9/11.

They should have sent a poet. And ICE has been found insufficient today. DHS didn't exist at all in 2001, and at this point ICE is nothing but baggage. And yes, I know ICE is part of DHS. Hence "another branch of DHS."
I legit can't believe there's an advocate for ICE in this thread. Interesting.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Trump nominated an Islamophobic evangelical with a penchant for conspiracy theories (Clinton killings, etc) for Director of the United Nations Organization for Migration. He was rejected, despite this position being traditionally an American seat, a US national holding it on all but one occasion since 1951.

Not that any American who owes their job to the current Admin should even be given serious consideration for this job in particular.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.![]()
I do believe you’re misrepresenting my position a little.
ICE is DHS’s main investigative arm, really its only one. The whole reason it was formed is because those investigations used to be handled by a handful of agencies with essentially overlapping jurisdictions, leading to a high degree of inefficency and constant inter-agency conflict.
Pursuing and deporting immigrants is handled by one division of ICE, ERO. ERO is only 2000 of the agency’s 22,000 employees. That whole division can (and should) be fired en masse, and ICE can carry on with its usual tasks like normal. Like I said earlier in the thread, I think we should basically turn ICE into CE.

They should have sent a poet.Look at the second attempted feud w/ Taylor Swift exposed as a complete fabrication.
To reiterate what others have said, you can like the spotlight and still be an idiot. Just like you can be trolling (ie, saying something to provoke a reaction) and still believe the thing you said to provoke a reaction.
Also, not sure where you're going with the "second attempted feud with Taylor Swift" thing because the person who was exposed as having fabricated the feud was...Taylor Swift. A fact I am happy to say that I only know because I watched a review of the terrible, terrible song she wrote about it.
Anyway, Kanye West is both an attention hog and an imbecile. He may have said the "slavery was a choice" thing in order to be controversial, but I'd be prepared to bet that, on some level, he also believes it.
There's this idea, I think, that dishonest people have to be smart enough to know they're lying. They don't always. Witness the people who share made up statistics about how many white people are killed by African-Americans, knowing full well that the statistics they sharing are made up, but believing wholeheartedly that black people do kill tonnes of white people every year and that the reason they can't find "honest" statistics is because the government is covering it up.
Bit of a frivolous thing compared to most topics, but for some reason whenever I go on YouTube I keep getting these pro-Conservative videos in my recommended section (probably solely because I've looked at one or two videos with 'politics' or 'history' in the tags) that are usually something along the lines of '>insert conservative speaker/pundit here< DESTROYS/SHUTS DOWN CRAZED SJW/FEMINIST/SNOWFLAKE etc.' (and these are always specifically American, otherwise I might have put this in the General Politics thread).
Is this sort of thing specifically a Right-wing phenomenon online? Like, I don't think I've seen the reverse of this, except maybe once (and that was more of an official courtroom kind of deal). Why is it that you never see much openly Liberal-aligned political videos getting popular enough to get recommended? (because I'm assuming they were only recommended because of popularity) Is it just the Alt-Right crowd religiously viewing these videos over and over and over while their non-crazy counterparts (on both ends of the political spectrum) go relatively ignored?
Those sell-by-dates won't stop me because I can't read! The people with assholish views are more inclined to be, well, assholes. Moderates don't get sadistic glee from "destroying" their opponents? If they would, they wouldn't be moderates or at least not stay that for long. The ones I know of who did/do similar things were the New Atheist types. And they pretty much morphed into the alt-right.

x3 It's hard to know what algorithm Google has for this sort of thing, but I do know that some content creators spam their keywords section with tons of words so that their videos are "relevant" to pretty much anything.
Honestly, I just wish YouTube would allow that recommended videos column to be disabled or hidden. I don’t need to see thumbnails for conspiracy theory videos while I’m watching a Conan clip.

That’s a perfect example of a policy that needs to change, though.
