The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think they're talking about making sure people know that it was Trump and the Republicans responsible for the shitty economy when it happens, instead of whatever Democrat is (hopefully) in the seat. Because once the face changes, people change who they blame.
Ah I see, that makes sense.

The problem with the argument of empowering "Both sides" is that the opposition lies about what the Democrats do and acts like they're traitors anyway.

So we should act in a decisive manner against criminal activity.

Why is impeaching a Supreme Court justice so difficult, anyway? What would make it dangerous for a Democratic Congress to, say, impeach Trump's picks and stonewall any future ones (the way Mc Connell blocked Garland)?

You know, the usual. Have the Democrats get the Congress and try their earnest to shut down any stupid law or measure Trump tries enforce to further his trade war.

Or at least keep hammering how stupid the whole thing is and how it would harm his voter base the hardest.

Because the branches are supposed to check each other and if Congress could just remove a Supreme Court justice easily then their independence would be pretty much over.

I feel it boils down like this:

  • Democrats should take the high road
  • They should also tear at the Republican establishment because they are criminals and vicious sociopaths.

So it's Waters' fault how?

I mean it's not like she was telling people to go out and murder journalists like Milo was.

Odds are this is probably a case of workplace violence.

I haven't found a reason to assume it's politically motivated yet.

Also, re: Newspaper shooting

It can't be a coincidence that this is happening right after Milo Yiannopoulos started going on about wanting vigilantes to start murdering journalists.

As much as I really hope it is because I'd like to believe people aren't that damn stupid.

I'd love to see someone throw the question of "What if someone asked for vigilantes to go after you with murderous intent?" in his face. Let's see what Insane Troll Logic he'll come up with to justify how him doing so is OK but others doing it to him is not.

Milo only cares about free speech when he can use it to bully people or to cry victim when he has to face consequences for his behavior.

I get that. But obviously he can't publicly admit that due to the inevitable... inconveniences it would cause him, right? So he has to hide behind some excuse that would make him pass for a good, law-abiding citizen.

Milo successfully weaponized trolldom to make himself rich and famous.

The only way to beat him is ignore him.

With this shooting, I give it 90% odds that it was a disgruntled (ex-)employee, and 10% chance of someone buying into the "FAKE NEWS!" rhetoric. If it had been one of the major television affiliates, I'd bump that up to 50/50, but not so much with print news (outside of the NY Times, anyway).

Mueller's still aiming for fall, right?

This is gonna be sweet.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. So far, the investigation has produced more wild speculation about who's going to be wearing the cuffs next than actual arrests against key figures of the Trump administration. Manafort and Flynn remain the only high-profile Trump insiders actually arrested.

If Mueller's preparing to wrap up his investigation, that does not inspire hope that it's actually going to go much further than them.

Odds are, we'll score a conviction against Manafort and that'll be the end of it. The official story will be that the Trump team attempted to collude but were stymied at every turn, and wound up being hapless beneficiaries of the election meddling rather than willful participants. This will be utter bullshit, but since Republicans control the entire government and the most watched news network in America, it will be accepted as the One True Narrative.

Trump will then crow about how the "WITCH HUNT" was finally defeated and how this is a triumphant victory against "FAKE NEWS MEDIA" and the Dems, while the Unicorn Brigade starts doomsaying about how all hope is lost and we need to install a leftist dictator.

And then, as insult to injury, Trump might just go and pardon Flynn and Manafort. 50/50 on that one.

[up] That's just the Obstruction portion, if I remember the reporting correctly. The trial for Manafort will also start in the fall.

Remember, as a general rule, when we refer to any major investigation, it'sactually several investigations.

@Raptorslash: See the funny thing is that while the bill didn't go through, it was essential at the cost of letting FDR win battle. The threat of it caused the switch in time that saved nine causing public support of the court packing to dwindle.

[up][up]You do realize that there are around 150 sealed subpoenas in the investigation and that Trump's personal lawyer and former vice chair of the Republican party Micheal Cohen has been arrested and might have turned states evidence, right?

The Muller aiming for a September finish was a lie the Trump team made up, we’ve no idea when he plans to end any part of the investigation.

I see the standard issue "thoughts and prayers" care package has been deployed in the latest shooting.

And somehow, according to Faux, its all the Democrats fault. Because if they weren't fighting back, the far-right wouldn't have to lash out violently.
