Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

x5: Speaking as a Game FA Qs user who usually sticks to the Politics board, I can tell you that the Trump trolls there are legion. The "Ignore user" option will be your best friend if you ever go anywhere near that cesspit.

Okay, I am absolutely this thread's resident depressed, cynical, misanthropic asshole, but even I am reasonably sure that Trump couldn't actually do that. At the very least, that seems like it would be a line that even the mainstream GOP that willingly got in bed with Trump and Russia wouldn't want to cross.

I’d put Jackson and maybe a couple others below Trump.
Also, on the topic of selling territory, Congress would be needed for that.
Yeah, I’d be much more worried about him backing out of NATO commitments somehow, or agreeing with Putin that the Baltics really do belong to Russia, or something like that.

They should have sent a poet.
Yeah, but when they crossed seemingly un-crossable lines before, it was to gain or maintain power, in one form or another. What would this possibly net them?
Selling territory off to Russia just reeks of Stupid Evil too much for the mainstream GOP to get onboard with its absolutely Stupid Evil leader. It would be far more likely, as others have already stated, that Trump and the GOP are planning to sell our allies to Russia, not our territory.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryThe GOP has consistently burned the United States whenever it benefited them. I can't imagine anything they wouldn't do for money that ends up in their pockets. Mitch Mc Connell is killing people in his home state by the thousands.

Whatever Russia was hypothetically planning to pay them for California, I am reasonably certain that the GOP could get more by siphoning the taxes California pays the federal government away from there and into their own pockets. Russia isn't even in the top 10 biggest economies, while California (if the US is broken up into individual states) would be the fifth-biggest, surpassing the UK.
If anyone is buying California from us, it's China (number-two and rapidly approaching our spot), not Russia.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryRussia hasn’t really expressed any interest in Alaska anyways. It only has the one warm-water port, located pretty far away from Russian territory. They’re much more interested in expanding into Europe, which has everything they want and is close to their industrial and military centers.
The Soviets actually happily commemorated their sale of Alaska to the US. They minted coins for it and there were several small ceremonies, which were used as diplomatic tools.
They definitely aren’t interested in California or any Pacific territories. Those are way outside their area of influence and would serve no strategic purpose.
Yeah, they were promoting the Calexit stuff more from a “cause chaos” angle than a “seize territory” angle.

They should have sent a poet.

W's ethics chief Richard Painter has said that it is the obligation of congress to investigate Trump and Pence's fitness for office before letting them appoint anyone to the Supreme Court.
Damn it, it's not The Wiki Rule I'm thinking of. What's the thing that says, basically, "a specialised wiki or forum will expand more beyond its initial stated purpose the longer it exists"?
