Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

To shift the subject, here's a story about how a bunch of utterly ignorant North Dakotan Republicans (the state most dependent on US-Canada trade) think that the upcoming trade war won't hurt them.

How utterly sweet.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Seriously, anyone? I feel so scared right now. Everything seems pointless if we're just going to end up under the boot of US and Russia. I have no one who cares about me and the tribeless are always the first to go.
It’s also super low effort, when you can’t even successfully bait Amber into calling you a bigoted reactionary who is actively discracing the work of Christ and has no place in the modern world, you’re just not doing trolling right.
Edit:
Serious answer, calm down, WW3 still looks highly unlikly, if you’ve got an EU passport than any EU country (baring maybe Poland and Hungary) is going to be relatively okay to live in, if you’re a middle-class white man you’ll also be safe in the US.

x7 I’m just noting a broader trend, obviously this forum isn’t totally representative of the Democratic base. That said, the left seems to trend towards defeatism much more often than the right, and defeatism seems to be the current tone of the base.

No offense, but worrying about WW3 is a huge waste of time.
Edit: dang this thread is moving fast

Maybe not WWIII but the global death of democracy looks pretty likely. Of course people like my parents would say "Big deal. I grew up in a dictatorship and it was all right, as long as you didn't say anything. Hell, it was better than the lot we have now!"

Yeah, that’s probably not a productive use of time either.
If there’s anything to worry about it’s the instability caused by the US vacating its position at the head of the international community. Not exactly the end of democracy, more broad regional instability in some of the more vulnerable areas.
They should have sent a poet.Democracy isn't going to go away any time soon. We're currently experiencing an erosion of real voter rights and the rise of kleptocracy, but actual democracy as in people voting to elect their politicians? Will take a lot of time to truly go away, during which we can still fight to protect what's left.
I thought it might be helpful to point out why Kennedy's replacement might not be what the most extravagant posters here are fearing. I also thought that this might carry more weight, as coming from someone who has no reason to wish for non-conservative results. If that doesn't strike you as "honest discussion," I don't really know what to say.

A person’s can be genuine and still be trying to provoke an extreme reaction out of others so as to get them banned. Hell I can think of several instances of that happening in OTC.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAnyone want to start a Go Fund Me to buy ourselves some congressmen?
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Yeah, even if they are shutdown that won't effect Breitbart or whatever other right-wing rag inevitably spawns to fill the void. A far more effective way for a hypothetical wealthy left-wing figure to invest their money in would be a Democratic equivalent to Fox News.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangRe: Polls: So in case anyone's interested, I looked at the net approval ratings and I think I've noticed something. Compared to past presidents, Trump's approval rating thus far has been consistently in the negative pretty much since his election; it was only in the positive for what seems like less than a month and has been negative ever since.
The vast majority of the presidents shown (everyone from Harry Truman onwards, if you were curious) start with fairly consistent positive ratings with maybe the odd dip into the negatives; Bill Clinton and Gerald Ford both start high, drop pretty low in short order, and recover almost as fast; in both cases their rating is consistently positive for the rest of their term/s.
In addition, there also hasn't been a single president whose approval rating has dropped to a lasting negative rating during their first term (I define 'lasting' as 'anything more than a good chunk of a year') who then went on to get elected for a second term; they were all voted out of office after their first. This can be seen most plainly with Jimmy Carter and George Bush Sr., although his ratings improved a little before he was voted out.
The only real exception to this, in my opinion, is Barack Obama, who spent pretty much the second half of his second year with a negative rating, which recovered in time for him to get re-elected; though it's important to note that even at its lowest point, it was still much higher than Trump's lowest.
I'm not going to bother trying to predict the future based on this information (well, actually I will, but I won't share that here); make of all this what you will.
Those sell-by-dates won't stop me because I can't read!
x5 Too late for that now; other networks have risen to ride (and even superseded at times) the coat tails of Fox News. Things like Breitbart and Drudge Report and others will simply fill the niche that Fox had. The only way to kill this many headed Hydra is to actually have viewership go down to where it is no longer profitable.

As for the Judgeship, the early front runner appears to be Brett Kavanaugh, an Appellate Judge for the D.C. Area
. The man was a part of the Ken Starr's Whitewater Investigation into Bill Clinton (and later the Lewinsky Affair), helped Bush Jr's campaign in Florida during the 2000 Election, and one of his most recent accomplishments was being the sole dissent in the case where the Illegal Immigrant was allowed to get an Abortion.
So he sucks, really bad. The one silver lining I can find of his is that he sided with the rest of his colleagues in finding that Obamacare did not violate the Origination Clause. However, he dissented with the rest of his colleagues when the Plaintiffs wanted a Retrial (the Court threw it out, Kavanaugh wanted the retrial).

this is trolling right? This isn't an effort at honest discussion, it's an effort at getting one of us to call him out so we can be reported for violating forum policy.
