Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Enormous upset in NY’s 14. Rep Crowley, a 10 term incumbent and #4 in House Democratic leadership, (and thus seen as a potential heir to Pelosi) has been upset by progressive challenger Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who backs Medicare for all, the government guaranteeing jobs for everyone, and abolishing ICE.

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |Part of it is that she's Puerto Rican in a diverse district, but a lot of her policies (Medicaid for All) are rather appealing. This isn't Kansas. A progressive candidate running in New York has a good shot of winning an election. NYC itself is pretty liberal for the most part so there's a good chance.
If anything it's a good thing that new blood are coming in.
Bernie's odd. Some of his policies (tariffs) are fucking stupid. That said, he has been pro choice from the beginning and he was willing to tell Aipac to go fuck itself.

Maybe, but there are parts of their platform that are agreeable (striking down citizens united, raising minimum wage, reforming the criminal justice system.) We can't afford to have overly idealogical people but given how obstructionist republicans are being it would be nice to have democrats who tell them "fuck you we're not gonna put up with this."
Uh....Cenk was part of Justice Democrats but he's more aligned with WOLF-Pac. Kyle Kulinski's the justice democrat guy (In some ways the guy's a wing nut but he has called out the new atheist movement on islamophobia and called out Ben Shapiro on the fact that he couldn't really care less about free speech. He fell out with Dave Rubin when Rubin tried to defend Israeli war crimes).
Whatever one says about Cenk he was willing to tackle new atheists before a lot of other people were and the excuses that a lot of people use (that he's a secret muslim or a muslim apologist) are rather rich. It's like, criticize the guy for being a blowhard and that it took way too fucking long to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide. Criticizing him for being a "secret muslim?" Yeah.........

The heck does Clinton have to do with anything? We're talking about Jeff Weaver writing a book that's only going to stoke up the stupider elements of the Sanders' fanbase. It's not about Clinton. Hell, it's not even about Sanders. It's about how every time we manage to unify around an issue and start pushing back against Trump, some idiot on the Unicorn Brigade Left tries to blow it up again. In this case, the idiot's name is Jeff Weaver.
This seems like an opportune time to remind you that it was elements of the Purity Left, not mainstream Democrats, who floated the idea of working with the alt-right to get Medicare For All.

Unicorn Brigade........that seems like a rather childish insult. In some regards they behave ridiculously. On the other hand, we can't just have more of the same politics either. Parties need to grow and evolve. Things like the crime bill of the nineties was caused by democrats trying to beat the republicans at their own game, and we got a lot of stupid stuff from it. (The AEDPA, which gutted habeus corpus, the crime bill etc).

He did better than most expected him to do. While some of his ideas are dirt stupid others do resonate with people (and he was more willing to snub AIPAC). One thing I noticed when looking at his voting record.....he's always been pro choice.
True. That absolutely was stupid on their part. But corporate money does wield a bit to much influence in the democratic party. Not as bad as in the republicans but it's there.
