Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Seriously, if you want an in-depth examination of just why Brainwashing for the Greater Good sucks balls, read Squadron Supreme. It's amazeballs.

Deontology is morality based on Mainly Principles. Basically For The Great Justice, usually associated with Lawful Good in the DND sense (to my despair as a LG Utilitarian)
Watch me destroying my countryI remember the "Why are Lawful Good never shown as Pragmatic Heroes" discussion
Bluntly, I think Lawful Good folk tend to view to Kant rather than John Stuart Mill.
Some things are just wrong and doing them is doing wrong.

Ah.
Honestly, I wasn't trying to say that brainwashing is wrong just because it's morally wrong. It was just the most immediate quote from SS that came to mind. But seriously, SS does do a good job showing why Brainwashing for the Greater Good is wrong and not just because 'It's wrong guys!' (Though the fact that you guys think that isn't good enough is somewhat disturbing.)

Trump's Approval rating has now flatlined at 42%, according to Five Thirty Eight. That puts him in about the same position as Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, and Harry Truman were at this point in there respective terms. Does this bode badly for Democrats in 2020?

... No. Again, in the modern era of American Politics, the opposition party has almost always gotten 1 house during a Midterm. The only exception was 2002, due to 9/11 and the Afghan War. Reagan lost the Senate in '82, Congress was purely Democrat through out H. W.'s tenure, Clinton lost both Chambers in '94, Bush Jr. lost both Chambers in '06, and we all remember what happened under Obama's term.
If Trump were popular, I would say Democrats should have to worry. But Trump isn't popular, Congress is even less popular, and Democrats have been winning the majority of Special Elections even in Deep Red States like Alabama. Enthusiasm for Democrats is also way up (though not as up as the Republicans were in 2010). Everything, and I mean everything, is pointing towards Democrats taking the House and putting a good fight in the Senate.
Of course, that isn't to say we shouldn't be actively doing everything in our power to help the Democrats; especially by actively voting for them come November.

If we're going to make comparisons to Ford and Carter, I should note that they both lost re-election.
Oh God! Natural light!"Harley Davidson, the last of America's purely American vehicle manufacturers, have left the United States (Wisconsin) and gone to Europe.
Steel tariffs are too high."
Wisconsin gave us Trump, it deserves this whipping.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."

Methinks we need to step away from the fantasies for a bit.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.
