Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

In a related article linked in that one, she relates she was asked, while trying to beg to keep the show, "what were you thinking?" and her reply was "I thought she was white!"
Even without knowing what the woman Roseanne mocked actually looks like, I can already smell the BS.

Roseanne Barr didn't lose so much as squander her legacy.
Her show was far ahead of its time dealing with child abuse, homosexuality (i.e. gay people exist and are perfectly fine), the death of the American Dream, and more.
She chose to ally with Trump and now people think of her as just another bigot.
Because, well, he repudiates everything she used to stand for.

Yeah, it's unfathomably stupid. She's an intelligent person; why would she think that allying with Trump would do anything but corrupt her legacy beyond hope?
Seriously, why people keep blaming outbursts of bigotry on medicine, sleep deprivation, or alcohol is beyond me. That's basically admitting "Here are my real thoughts that I'd never actually say aloud but did due to lowered inhibitions and poor impulse control". They should try blaming LSD, it would be more believable.
Well, my brother once tried to kill me on cocaine and I know a lot of terrible drunken outbursts.
My wife also hallucinated a invisible dog on our bed she accused me of abusing and tying up with duct tape, which involved throwing things at me.
That was on ambien (and reacting badly with other medication)
So I'm fairly aware of how behavior can change dramatically.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. Her Ambien outburst alone wouldn't do it; it's just that it's entirely consistent with her prior behavior while not on sleeping pills.

Good news: he's hurting among Independents, which (along with Democratic turnout) is who you need come in the Midterms.
Bad but utterly predictable news: Basically the entire Republican base supports (or at least tolerates) crimes against humanity in their own backyard.

As for Waters' statement, I saw nothing wrong with it... until that last sentence. As soon as you get someone's kids involved, regardless of how monstrous their parent is, that's goin' overboard, mate!

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Ordinarily this would barely be worth commenting on, but now that Sessions of all people has admitted that it was about slavery, every single Republican who continues to deny it afterwards just looks even worse.
Fortunately, Tim Kaine is heavily favored to win in Virginia.

From the Washington post
we have an article about how Donald "Build a wall and make Mexico pay for it" Trump and his role in the recent immigration crises, and how he predictably undermines any effort to fix his messes. Ending by pointing out that's he's just using immigration as a political wedge.

Even worse is that there's a much more reasonable objection that he could have invoked - naming a public school building after a still-living President not even one term removed from office is a bit odd. Unless there are examples involving Ronald Reagan, of course.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"![]()
What was your first clue?
I don't believe in that for the most part. Left to their own devices, people in general are pretty terrible and some (or most) will never EVER change no matter what logic, facts, or reason you throw at them. There are people out there who only care about themselves and some even get off on hurting others.
....that being said, there also many good people out there that do care about others and can make a difference. Assume the worst, but hold on for the best.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order. The 2016 election and the wake of reveals in light of #Me Too! has left me rather jaded in regards to human nature. It's especially eroded the idea that just because someone seems like a good person doesn't mean they can't have also done terrible and deeply unconscionable things, i.e they were never really good, you just didn't know any better.
But that's the struggle. We can't really do anything else but try to be good and make things better little by little.

Relevant to the current topic, though I imagine the reaction of most here will be to break out the tiny violins:
