Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump's still tweeting. Among all the immigration and Democrats and tariff rants, he had time to post this. I have no idea what it's referring to. Perhaps someone could enlighten me?
so I found the UN report on extreme poverty in the US, and damn is it a slam dunk. https://www.ohchr.org/EN/NewsEvents/Pages/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=22533
I'm not entirely sure what they expect from late night shows in general. They're advertised as entertainment, not serious political interviewers, even if a couple of them have been making their opinions rather obvious as of late. Like, there is a very different end goal a late night show host has from a journalist.
The report BTW is from December 2017. And this administration is no closer to addressing or even really acknowledging any of the issues. Shit, this administration is actively making some of them worse.
These problems aren't things that started with Trump. But he's definitely not helping.

Disgusted, but not surprisedSo it seems the Trump administration failed to secure the domain name: http://www.trumphotels.org/
Guess what happened.
Black Comedy is best comedy.
Hopefully I'll feel confident to change my avatar off this scumbag soon. Apologies to any scumbags I insulted.Nikki Haley has called it ridiculous for the UN to be analysing the poverty situation in the United States. What, it hurts the administration's feelings to hear how bad it is compared to all other developed nations?
From the report, the country has the highest youth poverty and infant mortality rates among the OECD, the world's highest incarceration rate and the tax cut passed last year does nothing but increase the divide between rich and poor. This needs to be heard.
Life is unfair...Oh hey, what do you know. Turns out all the memes made by young people in America about being broke, depressed, suicidal, in debt, and starving were actually a thinly-veiled cry for help. Who could have possibly seen this coming?
(never trust anybody who's more than 10 years older than you)

Watch me destroying my countryPainting an entire generation of people with one brush, ignoring all individual merit and other factors, is stupid.
And in other news, Harley-Davidson is moving some production to Europe, due to retaliatory tariffs.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

Who said I hated that generation specifically, rather than all generations?
But seriously, it's really frigging hard to remember not to paint everyone with the same brush when it seems like the older generation is doing everything humanly possible, and even a few things that are humanly impossible, to make as big of a mess as possible for the next generation to clean up (particularly the parts of the next generation who resisted having their toxic ideology beaten into them, both literally and metaphorically) after they shuffle off the mortal coil.
x3 That's... really not a good thing. As... questionable as Mattis was, he's still more qualified than Trumps "instincts"

Those manufacturing jobs are gonna come back to America just like Trump promised! Any day now!
The fools who actually thought Trump would actually save their livelihoods are going to lose their shirts thanks to his total lack of economic know-how, impulsive trade wars, and rampant corruption. If only so many other people who didn't enable Trump's rise to power weren't also in the blast radius of his economy-bomb...
Perhaps the "revolving-door" nature of the Trump admin. might mean it'll become significantly harder for him to enact policy decisions? You know, on the (admittedly slim) chance that the Congressional Republicans see that he's not listening to anyone now, realize that he's a rabid dog that's breaking free from his chains, and grow a big enough pair to actually, you know, do anything to stop him?

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's Dictionary

Yeah, when Australia was writing their constitution they explicity borrowed parts from the US system, but I imagine when they came to the part about the Electoral College they basically gave what in the modern vernacular would be "All the Nopes!".
It helps that in American terms, Australia has an almost vestigial Executive Branch.
