Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

One can say Lenin was better than Stalin. One can say that he sincerely seems to have meant well, in contrast to many of the other tyrants of the twentieth century. But that's about as far as you can take it.

Disgusted, but not surprisedLenin committed mass murder, arguably betrayed his nation multiple times (for what he perceived as the greater good), threatened people's families, and ruthlessly tried to purge religion.
He was a monster.
It's just Stalin's ruthlessness, callousness, and brutality were beyond his by far.
Stalin pretty much is the real life Eviler than Thou for how he took over the Soviet Union.

I'm down for increasing the Leftwing presence in America. Fact is, when one of the two major parties is almost entirely far-right, the other party has to take in everyone else on the spectrum from some moderate right, center-right, center, center-left, moderate-left, and the very rare far left. I'm sure there's plenty of people who would be fantastic politicians, but they can't really get into politics because the Republicans are fucking crazy and the Democrats are too diluted and full. No more room in the sane party.
Personally, I think the Republicans should be destroyed and the Democrats should split into two moderate political parties. I know there was talk of implementing a maximum wage limit somewhere in Europe, which is a really far-left policy, and I really want that idea to be able to be brought to the table here without the same party presenting it shutting it down because the range of politics is too wide.

Well.
Apparently one of the guys in charge of Trump's Concentration Camps was found to have child porn on his person. There's a citation coming due to the people in charge not looking into this properly.
Leave it to Trump to put Dirlewanger in charge.
Not even surprised any more. Just see M84's signature.

So just recently we had one camp accused of drugging children, another one that had a drug addict criminal watching over them to a judge's horror, and now we've got a camp that is being run by a pedophile.
What next on this neverending train of horrors?
But really, what else can you expect from an administration that treats these people as an "infestation"?

Disgusted, but not surprisedOh wow, it just hit me that it's the South African "total strategy"
all over again.
Rosenstein is still standing his ground.
This would almost certainly backfire on them though.
If that's what happened, Nunes' staffers should not have felt personally attacked. Rosenstein was just telling them the consequences of taking a very foolish action against him. He has a right to due process, and during that process, the facts matter.

His eventual book will be fancinating, I think.

So I just got another ad from "Trump Make America Great Again Committee" before a YouTube video (ironically one that's criticizing him, so go figure), but the linked survey was, once again, the "Mainstream Media Accountability" survey
So I'm encouraging people to give him the answers he doesn't want - just make sure to use a "dump" email address because I guarantee you'll be getting fundraising requests after filling it out.
The reason I'm resharing here, though, was the final question - "Do you believe that our Party should spend more time and resources holding the mainstream media accountable?"
That's why I feel it's important to fill out the survey with answers he doesn't like - that way he won't even be able to fall back on THAT when trying to request a renewal of the Alien & Sedition Act from the early 1800s.

...Depends on how far you take it. Lenin was no saint even if he was no Stalin.
Disgusted, but not surprised
