Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

From the article...
“I think ‘immediately’ is kind of open to interpretation,” she told the Capital-Journal.
That is an even worse attempt at My Rule Fu Is Stronger than Yours than Clinton with "definition of 'is' is".
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"So uh...that EO that Trump just signed...not only will it not do anything long term since it'll run afoul of the Flores agreement. It also makes no provision for reuniting the several thousand kids already separated from their parents. It's fucking useless.

Thankfully, the Facebook campaign money raised will be paying the bail for quite a large number of the parents and reuniting them.

Depending on the age of the child and whether detailed records were kept (something I doubt very much), it may literally be impossible to reunite parent and child, especially if the parent has already been deported.
This entire clusterfuck is a shitshow and it's infuriating.

Which is another point of legal fees.
The situation is going to be fucking awful and I'm sure there have already been abuses above and beyond what's been reported, if not deaths.
But the situation has a few hope spots. I just hope they're not a Hope Spot.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. With the fact that there's at least three beauracratic organizations involved and none of them have any way of communicating clearly with each other, and no way of keeping track across these organizations, this is going to be a project of years. And that's not even talking about the parents that have already been deported back to their home countries while their children remain here, being taken care of by American taxpayer money. There's kids here that aren't ever going to see their parents again because of this ridiculously cruel and massively incompetently implemented policy.
In less Nazi-like but just as fucked up news, White House proposes plan to merge Department of Education and Department of Labour
.
Department of Child Labour would be a wonderful name. /s

...You know, I joked about striking wages and turning everyone into serfs a few pages back, but now I'm not sure if I should be laughing. Seriously, if unpaid labor is the only thing a kid knows growing up, then why would they think there's anything wrong with that when they're actually grown up?

IIRC it's too soon for the effect to be felt yet at the polls, and the people who like him are mostly just Republicans and are unlikely to dislike him over this.

Kansas' Sec. of State, Kris Kobach, is forcing his department to continue the State's Voter ID Laws which were declared illegal a few days ago
.
Now he's clearly violating the law. Screw sending him to School, he really needs to be sent to jail.
