The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I like Trumpets. Can also apply to any number of assorted right-wing zealot types like Le Pen, Farage and whoever runs the Af D in Germany.

I twittered this today:

"Jesus notably had three enemies in life: Fanatics, hypocrites, and Romans (Fascists)."

It says a lot about the use of religion today in the USA.

[up] I believe you meant the Roman Government, because while Jesus did want the Romans to be removed from Israel/Judeah, he never actively attacked them, and disparaged anyone that did (like Peter). In fact, one of the Miracles Jesus performed was on a Roman (the Healing of the Centurion's Servant, or the Healing of the Royal Officials Son, depending on the Gospel).

But I do agree with your overall sentiment here.

[up][up][up] I wonder if the use of Trumpets in Revelations (as one of many Signs of the End Times) are related to the epithet?

Maybe, although I think it's just catchy. Especially since they tend to arise after the devastating financial crisis/apocalypse rather than before.

You know, with the US quitting the human rights council over Israel, I haveto wonder; with the utter distain America under Trump has had for its allies, and the limited strategic gain there is in their undying lyalty to Israel's interests, how far can Trumpism go until Trump or his ideological successors throw Israel under the bus like everyone else?

Now now, don't make Nazi comparisons about the literal concentration camps, because that would be mean. Sessions responds to Nazi comparisons: 'They were keeping the Jews from leaving'

So how long before someone reminds him of that time we rejected Jewish refugees for fear that there might be Nazi spies aboard?

Incidentally, someone in another forum found a Washington Post article about how HHS had screwed up under Obama and placed children in abusive homes and with human traffickers. Despite that being a false equivalence to this situation, I've been having trouble tracking down when, exactly, the FBI background checks were dropped for prospective foster homes in these situations. Most of my searches result in information about domestic adoptions instead.

Incidentally, saw a really good political cartoon today, with the Elf lacking a Shelf (Sessions) using the Bible quote to justify the policy - while Jesus, standing just to his left, went "Uhhhhhhh... no."

And a similar one from Andy Marlette in which a pair of ICE agents are taking Mary and Joseph away from Jesus.

Which is funny considering a good portion of Americans were receptive towards Nazism.

I remember Jack Kirby (of Thor and Third World Fame) talked about the Jewish veterans, of which his friends included, who went down to beat up the Nazi Bund that were having a big gathering at Madison Square Garden.

Jack said, "These guys are cowards and the biggest way to show the world that is by making them sure they know the consequences for going after someone weaker than themselves was for someone stronger to teach them a lesson."

It was part of why Stan Lee said the Thing was based on him.

Later Jack would actually shoot Nazis in Europe.

In actual good news, $4000 a Minute Pours in to Help Reunite Immigrant Familes.

(CNN) - In less than four days, a California couple has raised more than $5 million — and counting — through Facebook to help reunite undocumented families that have been separated at the border.

Charlotte and Dave Willner were inspired to start the campaign when they saw the viral image showing a frightened, crying 2-year-old girl looking up to the adults around her after crossing the border. The girl, who was with her mother and others, had rafted across the Rio Grande and the group was stopped in Texas by US Border Patrol agents.

"These aren't kids we don't have to care about. They're like our kids," Charlotte Willner told the San Jose Mercury News. "When we look at the faces of these children, we can't help but see our own children's faces."

The Willners originally started their fund-raising campaign named "Reunite an immigrant parent with their child" on Saturday morning with the goal of $1,500. But soon their efforts went viral.

The couple chose to raise money for the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), a nonprofit located in Texas that offers free and low-cost legal services to immigrants and refugees. The original goal of $1,500 was the minimum amount to cover bond fees for one person, according to RAICES.

By Tuesday afternoon, the campaign surpassed $5 million, with more than 122,000 people donating. Its new goal is $6 million.

"The run rate over the last 3 hours was nearly $4k every minute," posted Dave Willner on Facebook.

RAICES confirmed to CNN that the organization has been in contact with the couple since Saturday.

"We do not have the words to thank Charlotte and Dave Willner," RAICES posted on Facebook.

"We've been occasionally crying around the office all day when we check the fundraising totals. There are terrible things happening in the world. And there are many people who are deciding not to look away but to do something."

Also did the math. If it takes $1500 to give bail for one kid, then if they manage to reach six million, that's roughly enough for 4000 kids.

Honestly, I think people should stop comparing Republicans to Nazis.

Because the Republicans behind these policies want to be called Nazis.

They want to turn around and tell not just their core supporters, but a larger undiscerning public, "Our opponents don't know history and are just plain stupid. They're just hysterical and lashing out. They're just jealous that we're winning so much, and that they're losers."

They complete change the debate, helping people turn a blind eye to the fact that they are inflicting suffering and misery upon children.

And frankly you just don't need to be a Nazi to do that.

Being a plain ol' Republican works just fine.

I'm pretty sure their goal is to get entire families out of lockup, so that'd be 4000 people - how many kids and adults is a bit of a tossup question.

Sessions just got charged by members of his own Church for violating the rules, due to his involvement in detainee treatment.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/19/politics/sessions-church-complaint/index.html

I never would have fingered Sessions as a Methodist TBH, they have a reputation for being relatively moderate, don't they?

There is also something odd about Jim Justice, governor of WV. He and Trump are very close and a few years ago Justice sold his coal mines to Russians for $600 about $550 million and then bought them back for $5 million. Then he ran for governor as a Democrat, won it, and then switched parties. Since then, he has twice hosted Trump at his (the governor's) privately owned casino resort, and the Republican Congress once. Too much money being exchanged between this crew of Republicans and the Russians for their not to be something going on.

I disagree. For one, they would do the same thing if they were called racist or any other thing, no matter how true it is. And two, exactly because that is one of their favourite tactics, designed to distract and move the goal post, we should not allow them to get away with it. We can't point out often enough to point out the parallels to the Nazis and Hitler. Because that's exactly what this is and it can't be repeated often enough.

I nothing else nobody will be able to claim in the end "I didn't really realize what was going on."

Completely valid points. It's just that I feel that the raw images and recordings of human suffering should be the focal point of the entire discussion. The historical parallels shouldn't even be needed to communicate how bad things are, but perhaps I'm being too optimistic.

By the way, this is probably paranoia (at least I hope), but someone on Game FA Qs mentioned expecting Trump to use the FCC to control the media, the military, etc... to their full power and executive actions regulating what you can say and do...

[up][up] That’s not how the FCC works. They certainly can’t control the military, and they’d be hard pressed to control the media.

They should have sent a poet.
