Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Mod with the Migraine
It wouldn't surprise me if one of these kids decades from now becomes something akin to -Killmonger.
New Survey coming this weekend!Killmonger was as much a US Military and CIA creation as other causes, though.
In fact, his approach of "use it when useful, ignore when not" in regards to Wakandan royal law and traditions seems a lot like a far far smarter Trump

"You can reply to this Message!"I get that 2020 is exciting but lets not be silly about this.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangSo according to the man himself
, calling the hardcore Trumpists Nazis isn't a Godwin's Law violation any more.
It's still inaccurate, Nazism is a specific ideology that they for the most part do not follow. Their brand of fascism is All American.

The long cycle of 2016 is probably what gave us Trump.

Hopefully I'll feel confident to change my avatar off this scumbag soon. Apologies to any scumbags I insulted.DOW and other stocks have been falling consistently the past few days, due to the US-China trade war kicking off in earnest. I suspect it will get worse as things escalate with Beijing, and as the grace period for other countries expires and they retaliate.

In broad terms, the Trump shift was to do better than Mitt Romney with white voters with no college degree but considerably worse than Romney with college-educated whites. We now know this wound up having a number of specific geographic effects: Non-college whites are overrepresented in a few key swing states, so Trump's narrow wins in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan netted him a bonanza of electoral votes.
The shift let him secure an Electoral College majority while losing the popular vote pretty significantly. Part of this was the tipping point of a long-running trend. Barack Obama was already getting so few votes from working-class white Southerners that Trump couldn’t really do any better than Romney with this demographic, but he did lose a lot of votes from white college graduates in the South.
You can sum up those shifts with the striking fact that Clinton came closer to winning Texas than she did to winning Iowa, and closer to winning Arizona and Georgia than she did to winning Ohio.
But if you look at Morning Consult’s latest map of Trump’s approval rating, you’ll see it looks a lot more like the 2012 map than the 2016 map:
[[quoteblock]]Trump is underwater not just in the three critical swing states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin but also in Iowa and Ohio — two states Obama won that weren’t even remotely close in 2016. Meanwhile, he’s in the green in Arizona, Georgia, and Texas, suggesting that Democrats’ high hopes for riding an anti-Trump backlash to midterm success in those states may be unrealistic.
The only states in which the May 2018 approval map breaks in a serious way from the Obama-Romney map is that Trump is up 5 points in Florida, which Obama won, and up a mere 1 point in Utah, which Romney won in a landslide.
Adding onto this, 538 has state by state listing of how Trump's approval ratings have changed since his inauguration, and it's dropped in every state
. Even some states that are quite red or are normally red leaning have seen his approval drop significantly or go negative, meaning more people disapprove than approve of him.
Also, a few pages back there was some confusion about who Stephen Miller is, so... Miller is a special advisor to the president who was a prominent alt-righter and a lifelong proponent of white resentment. He's distinguished by such charming stories such as when he was a young boy he found that that an equally young friend of his was the child of immigrants or had actually been an immigrant herself, (I forget which) and promptly became a bully to her and actively led groups shunning her and other immigrants. In high school and college he specialized in trolling calls for tolerance and lashing back at requirements for students to keep schools clean because that's why they had janitors.
He became a staffer for congress people like Sessions, Michelle Bachman, and others, and in between that he ran radio shows where he called for violent response to Islam, hosted guests like Bannon where he solemnly agreed with Bannon's calls about clashes of civilizations and the need for white people to stand up for themselves, and has been believed to be a prominent influencer in both the travel ban and Trump's torpedoing a moderate immigration bill with protections for DACA recipients by swaying Trump against it after Trump was initially for it. (The "shit hole countries" incident.)
He's also probably the last prominent Bannonite standing in the administration.
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |Oh, I am with Godwin. Trumpists are the US version of Nazis. And so far the only notable difference is that Hitler was at least smart enough to do something for his voters (while Trump doesn't give a f...) and that Trumpist don't have the power (yet) to do what the Nazis did. But they tend to be very open about the fact that they would if they could.
x3 More likely, it's the last poll to come out when Trump was riding his North Korea Agreement. Less an Outlier, more a Poll that used older data.
CNN, the first Poll I know that has come after this separation policy, currently has Trump at 39% approval
.
Here's hoping.
Man, Trump's trying to justify the separation policy on the basis of procedure, that you have to split up families to criminally charge the adults. How long until they just come out and say they are mentally (at least....must be a reason they won't let observers into the holding areas) torturing children because the Republican base wants them to?
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
