Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

MSNBC is reporting that a town hall from February 2nd 2017 that discussed a number of policies to deter immigration, including the "separate the families" idea
. And yes, all immigration, including those legally seeking asylum in the US.
The ideas included holding people indefinitely (rejected for logistical reasons, because no shit, Sherlock), they wanted to hold children in custody for longer than 20 days (a previous Federal court decision kiboshed that one), and they're currently pushing to raise the bar to pass the asylum interview.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Oh, and here's a fun one that slipped under my radar, though the link I posted last alluded to it.
Jeff Sessions announced a policy on June 11th stating that gang violence and domestic abuse
will not be considered grounds for asylum seeking unless the applicant can prove that their government was either complicit in it or turned a blind eye to it.
I plan on giving an earful to Katko's office tomorrow...
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"A bipartisan group of former federal prosecutors is denouncing the family separation policy.

Meanwhile, Trump is Tweeting that illegal immigrants are "infesting" America.
Infesting.

Check out stages 2 and 3.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.1)There are no camps.
2) There are camps but they're used as a deterrent for people that break the law.
3) The camps aren't that bad, actually.
Literally, all 3 excuses were used by the Third Reich at some point.
This is getting dangerously scary

New Survey coming this weekend!I was wondering what happens to the parents and the children after they get separated on the border. Do they usually get reunited and then deported together, are some allowed into the US?
Life is unfair...I'm going to be the one to say it:
When this is all done, everyone who participated in this, needs the American equivalent of Nuremberg.
Any candidate in 2020 that is anything less of full blown scorched earth against the Trump administration and prosecuting them is a fuck no for me supporting them in the primary.
New Survey coming this weekend! My previous post was directed at Tactical Fox, I got precision
'd and can't edit that one.
Also, stopping atrocities is more important in the short term than going after the perps.

I'm really not sure the authorities are recording parent-child links, not if they're just throwing kids into literal cages. The longer this goes on the more will be permanently separated.

Now now, don't make Nazi comparisons about the literal concentration camps, because that would be mean.
Sessions responds to Nazi comparisons: 'They were keeping the Jews from leaving'
To avoid accusations of Godwining, maybe compare them to the British Boer War camps instead? They seem somewhat close in purpose and although us Brits were mildly gentler than the SS it wasn't by much. Didn't set out to kill thousands of people, we just didn't give a damn that we did. [1]

It's still weird to think that Cruz has only been around since 2012.
