The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up] You can, in many districts, swap a Senator for a mere 10k votes, a Congressman for half of that (or less), and someone like a county comptroller with a couple dozen. If Russia knocks a mere 5% of the registered Democratic voters off the registered voters list in every incumbent district, we'd see Trump with a veto-proof Senate majority.

5%. Ask any gamer how they like those odds.

There’s no ban on military in space, every spy satalite is a military instillation in space, hell GPS satalite are technically military installations in space, the military even have a space shuttle that they use.

There’s a ban on WM Ds in space but that’s it, also there are bans on claiming territory in space and a bunch of rules about military installations and conduct specifically on celestial bodies, but that’s it.

So satalite can be whatever, but yes there’s a ban on a military moon base.

Donald Trump seems to be fond of Andrew Jackson. Why is that anyway?

Also, people like to Godwin Trump, but it seems more appropriate to Godwin Andrew Jackson since he's guilty of genocide(different method and motives to Hitler, but still)

[up][up] That treaty isn't likely to last long once moon bases become practical, and has arguably already been violated.

We'll probably be rethinking a lot of our space law once we actually get out there.

You can't Godwin Andrew Jackson for that very reason.

Godwin's Law is about bring up Nazism in something where there's actually nothing Nazi-like.

Like, "Micro transactions make EA like the SS!"

When there's actually something genuinely Nazi like or comparable, it's a valid comparison.

Especially since the treatment of Native Americans fascinated and inspired Hitler.

Godwin's Law is about bring up Nazism in something where there's actually nothing Nazi-like.

Godwin's Law is not about validity, it's simply about how likely a Hitler or Nazi comparison is to come up in an online discussion.

It was also supposed to be a joke that the internet then promptly ran into the ground.

If you want something that'll make you depressed as all hell, ProPublica obtained audio from inside one of the child detention centers.

And to her credit, former First Lady Laura Bush wrote an Op-Ed for the Washington Post (not sure if that was intended as a veiled jab at Trump's criticism of Bezos or not) criticizing the policy, saying that "this zero-tolerance policy is cruel. It is immoral. And it breaks my heart.”

@Dingo: Supporting voter ID laws isn't in itself illegal, nor is implementing them. And it doesn't seem like he was actively charged with anything else, which is what it would take for him to end up in jail. And besides, him actually having to take a legal course is a hell of a lot funnier.

Here's to hoping this means he doesn't run a successful campaign for governor.

[up] No, but him violating a court order (he was ordered to issue Voting Information for 2016's Election, and he didn't), and being found in contempt of court (he didn't share important evidence he had with the Prosecution Team) are illegal and prosecutable with jail time.

I still remember the sinking feeling in my gut when I realized the GOP primaries had come down to him and Trump.
