Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I remember reading the first chapter of a book by Ann Coulter and it was magnificent bile:
It talked about how the Iraq War was justified because they were terrorists and even if it was just for oil that was good because we need oil, so we should be able to invade any country we want for it. Then she went and talked about how Joseph Mcarthy had been wrongly maligned because communists were a threat, so any and all means was justified in getting the people involved.
Ah, here's an actual quote:
“Why not go to war just for oil? We need oil. What do Hollywood celebrities imagine fuels their private jets? How do they think their cocaine is delivered to them?” — Ann Coulter

Are we sure this isn't just going to galvanize their base based on the whole "tough on border security" thing alone?
It would not surprise me at all if they could just brush off the kids thing as just being the parent's fault, never-mind the people who are just willing to extend their racism to the kids too.

Maybe, but considering that it could anger/offend the rest of the general public that's something that could easily be a net negative for them.
Especially considering that as the incumbent party their base turnout is likely to be depressed.

The bald guy who's Younger Than He Looks.
As for Coulter, reading that made a word that rhymes with "blunt" spring to mind.
He's the loudest xenophobic voice in the administration since Bannon left, just to give an idea.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Something that wasn't much commented on amidst all the other ridiculous shit going on today: When Trump announced the creation of the space branch of the military, he described it as "separate but equal" with the Air Force
. (It's about 30 seconds in to that video.)
Just let that sink in. The President of the United States used a phrase associated with the defense of racial segregation in describing an initiative he was announcing and that's not even the most ridiculous thing to happen today.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. We don't have any military deployments in space, because that's against international law (though I admittedly can't remember off the top of my head whether the US actually signed that treaty). And the President doesn't even have the power to create a new branch of the armed forces — it takes an act of Congress to do that.
It's also remarkably similar to a proposal from last year that was spiked by the Trump administration
(specifically, Secretary of Defense Mattis came out against it) because it's a stupid waste of time and money.
We have lots of military deployments in space. On top of the dozens of different satellite networks like Keyhole or SBIRS we have all sorts of experimental stuff like the X-37, and no doubt many classified endeavors as well. There’s enough stuff up there that we have a joint command for space, though it’s fairly haphazard supposedly. We’re only banned from deploying WM Ds in space, though there are rumors we haven’t quite obeyed that bit of international law. The Air Force is actively pursuing space superiority as one of its main missions.
The reasoning Mattis put forward for opposing the idea was sound, but we’re going to have to set up a space force eventually. He pretty much conceded that fact. I doubt we’ll see it come together soon but it’s a good idea. It’s probably this administration’s only good idea.

They should have sent a poet.According to the most recent episode of Mueller, She Wrote, the word around D.C. is that both Nunes and Rohrabacher are under criminal investigation right now.
They didn't have any official sources to back it up, but heard it from contacts from the inside.
I normally wouldn't bring something so rumor-y up, but I've found them to be very reliable, and tend to have a lot of insight on stuff that hasn't been picked up yet.

Perhaps, but don’t forget that we’ve done nothing to counter Russian hacking of voter rolls since Trump's inauguration. I have no doubt in my mind that they’re going to hack us even harder now that they know we’re vulnerable.
That’s why it’s so important that you convince everyone you know to regularly check to see if they’re registered to vote. We can’t get out the vote if people “mysteriously aren’t on the system” without knowing it.

How long do you think we'll have to wait until we have someone decent as president again?
