Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Note how quickly he’s changed his tune when it comes to military exercises on the Korean Peninsula. I’ll point out that “war games” and “provocative” are basically the North Korean propaganda line on the issue, historically the US and South Korea and basically everyone else have explicitly avoided that phrasing.
They should have sent a poet.India is moving forward with retaliatory tariffs in response to the US metal tariffs.

So with the shelter article linked above, I genuinely feel sorry for both the kids and employees in those shelters. I'm pretty sure none of them anticipated this type of policy, so they're doing their best, but that's going to lead to chronic overwork and stress by sheer volume, let alone having to deal with each individual kid and the myriad issues that will inevitably crop up from being forcibly separated from their parents.
Hell, it reminds me of an old psychology experiment where researchers deliberately separated puppies from their mothers at different stages of development
, and the ones taken earlier invariably showed more behavioral (and even physical health!) issues. For most people, that'd be a Captain Obvious conclusion, but apparently we're under the impression that Humans Are Special in that regard.
And it just occurred to me - Donald Trump is literally worse than Eric Cartman when he's on a power trip. He's like Cartman in the episode where he's posing as an "out of control child" and saying "Wha'eva! Wha'eva! I do what I want!"

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"At least Cartman is funny and actually suffers Laser-Guided Karma sometimes. Trump is neither.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.I highly doubt it. For one, I noticed that common theme in dictatorships and fascists is one of isolation. The people in charge of such nations seem keen on pushing the narrative that they are alone so that the people search inward for solidarity, not outward, allowing the nationalist sentiments to rise. Naturally having allies gets in the way of that, so it stands to reason that Trump and his administration wants to isolate the US from the greater global community, make enemies of their allies and force mutual hatred betwixt nations to fester.
TL;DR Its very likely that Trump and/or his administration/backers wants to force the US to adopt an "US vs. the World" mentality simialr to North Korea.
Maybe, but we also should keep in mind that they can be awful and still sincerely believe that what they're doing is necessary. Trump views the world in adversarial terms so it wouldn't surprise me if he just views it as making the US strong and returning to the 'proper' way of doing things.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI don't think Japan is too thrilled about Trump pulling out of the TPP, or about his ideas of removing troops from South Korea.
And Turkey had that scuffle with Trump a few months back where Ergogan threatened him with an "Ottoman slap".
I guess I'll give you Hungary.

Not to mention Russia is right on Japan's doorstep (they are literally directly north of Japan with Sakhalin and northeast with the Kuril Islands) and they still have the Kuril Islands dispute. Last thing Japan wants to do is piss Russia off, as they really don't want an Asian Crimea and have enough problems with their neighbors as it is. Also, ugh, I got a Donald Trump ad on this site. Asking "Do you think President Trump is Making America Great Again and to vote now...

Has he? They have fair and free elections in Japan, unlike what happens in Russia. And the ruling party is there mostly out of tradition, not force. Let's not confuse nationalism with closeness to Putin, the man is in his own league apart from regular nationalists.

Russia isn't dumb enough to step on Japan's toes like that. The Ukraine or Georgia, sure. Japan is one of the US's closest allies, has the single largest US military presence outside the continental US, and they're a major player in their own right.
Russia is more than happy to throw its weight around with former Soviet states that can't do much to fight back either militarily or politically, and they'll needle away at US power where they can, but they're not going to try and start shit with us that directly.
They should have sent a poet. Are we sure Trump would back up Japan, especially given that he seems stuck in the era when people believed that Japan Takes Over the World was (treated as) a legitimate worry? And then you have to add on whether or not Trump is in fact dancing to Putin’s tune. If so Russia has nothing to worry about in screwing with the US.

You know, there's one thing I'd love to see an answer to from the conservative wing - how much money are we spending on this compared to the previous system? Because given how much they tended towards being deficit hawks under Obama, this is more than a little hypocritical.
Oh, I know - the tax cuts were evidence of that. But it'd be fun to point that out to the rank-and-file just to see what mental gymnastics they'd have to go through to even attempt justifying it.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"

Just another manic... Sunday. note
The oldest tweet is four hours, the newest tweet is less than an hour. So what's going on in the news today that has him maniacally tweeting for four hours straight? It certainly isn't the latest shooting.
Please clear up the Fake News!
Daniel Henninger of The Wall Street Journal: “This IG Report makes it clear, as did Rod Rosenstein’s memo, that Trump was absolutely justified, unquestionably justified, in firing Jim Comey. So I think the Mueller Investigation is on pretty weak grounds right now.” Witch Hunt!
Funny how the Fake News, in a coordinated effort with each other, likes to say I gave sooo much to North Korea because I “met.” That’s because that’s all they have to disparage! We got so much for peace in the world, & more is being added in finals. Even got our hostages/remains!
Holding back the “war games” during the negotiations was my request because they are VERY EXPENSIVE and set a bad light during a good faith negotiation. Also, quite provocative. Can start up immediately if talks break down, which I hope will not happen!
The denuclearization deal with North Korea is being praised and celebrated all over Asia. They are so happy! Over here, in our country, some people would rather see this historic deal fail than give Trump a win, even if it does save potentially millions & millions of lives!
Our economy is perhaps BETTER than it has ever been. Companies doing really well, and moving back to America, and jobs numbers are the best in 44 years.
Washington Post employees want to go on strike because Bezos isn’t paying them enough. I think a really long strike would be a great idea. Employees would get more money and we would get rid of Fake News for an extended period of time! Is @Wa Po a registered lobbyist?
Then a retweet binge (he's retweeting himself, by the way):
Democrats can fix their forced family breakup at the Border by working with Republicans on new legislation, for a change! This is why we need more Republicans elected in November. Democrats are good at only three things, High Taxes, High Crime and Obstruction. Sad!
My supporters are the smartest, strongest, most hard working and most loyal that we have seen in our countries history. It is a beautiful thing to watch as we win elections and gather support from all over the country. As we get stronger, so does our country. Best numbers ever!
The IG Report totally destroys James Comey and all of his minions including the great lovers, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, who started the disgraceful Witch Hunt against so many innocent people. It will go down as a dark and dangerous period in American History!
And back to fresh tweeting...

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.
