Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Might be able to lever a few round with the right pitch of rhetoric, like when the Soviet Union fell over and half the US and UK-based Marxists turned into neocons so they could be extremely zealous about spreading democracy rather than communism. Then again, look how that turned out, so maybe not a good idea.
watch as Westboro gets a membership surge.
What a lovely pagetopper.

Same. I guess they haven't updated their privacy policies yet.

Out of curiosity, I did the maths on Trump's mother, given that she was also an immigrant.
Under the RAISE Act, her first attempt to apply would be rejected out of hand, as she still had three months to go before her 18th birthday when she received her immigration visa. She arrived in the US the day after her 18th birthday.
So, bumping her age up to 18 just so we can get her onto the system at all, she comes out at approximately 17 points if I'm generous and assume she's the top percentile for English language proficiency (which is actually unlikely as English was her second-language; she only learned it and spoke it in school, which she left at the age of 13 — she wouldn't have used English in as an every day language until she arrived in the US).
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Joe Machin isn't ruling out endorsing Trump in 2020.
x2 Patrick Morrisey won the Republican Primary. Don Blankenship, the former Coal Baron and Convict who came in 3rd in the Republican Primary, is running a 3rd Party Campaign against them both (and since he's on the Conservative end, he's going to steal votes from Morrisey).

Regarding the Southern Baptists, I think that the split-off will be smaller than y'all are predicting. Remember that there was a 70% vote to clean house and engage with the moderates, and part of that article discusses how the old-guard culture warriors are increasingly retiring and dying off, while the Gen X and Millenial Baptists want to focus less on hating the gays and more on getting children fed, and aren't willing to support Trump's totally unchristian behavior simply because he's a hateful son of a bitch (with apologies to all female dogs, who are usually very nice and shouldn't be associated with Trump).
I choose to be optimistic here.
