The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Since when did we live in a bad South Park episode?

Since the moment Trump became the GOP nominee for the 2016 election.

Disgusted, but not surprised

[up]x3: Last I checked, Trump is still trying to downplay Manafort's role in the campaign, saying he was only part of it for a short time (it was actually 144 days, longer than Bannon's 80), and that he didn't really know Manafort (the two have been in each other's company for three decades, Manafort lived in Trump Tower for a good while, he ran Trump's campaign, etc.). He's lying his ass off, as usual, but expect a tantrum, as [up][up] pointed out.

[up] The whole situation even threw Matt and Trey themselves for a loop when it turned out the bastard "won".

Catholics have always taken a much sterner stance on human rights than U.S. evangelicals. That doesn't surprise me at all.

While the Catholic Church itself is extremely flawed, catholics proper are in my experience one of the less bigoted christian groups around. I'm not entirely sure why, but it is a trend I've noticed.

[up]Because Catholics are a diverse lot. Racism tends to not hold up very well when a significant chunk of people of your denomination are brown, and other forms of discrimination tend to follow suit. The most deplorable "Christians" are almost wholly local US branches with little to no presence internationally.

Wow, what a tough sentence for Paul Manafort, who has represented Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and many other top political people and campaigns. Didn’t know Manafort was the head of the Mob. What about Comey and Crooked Hillary and all of the others? Very unfair!

I’ve had to beat 17 very talented people including the Bush Dynasty, then I had to beat the Clinton Dynasty, and now I have to beat a phony Witch Hunt and all of the dishonest people covered in the IG Report...and never forget the Fake News Media. It never ends!

[up][up][up] Like every religion, it depends on the place you look at. If you check the United States, where they are mostly based in the northwest, they're cool. Go to Poland, you'll instead see pro-authoritarian or anti-birth control demonstrations. Try the Philippines and you'll wish you hadn't.

I think confession’s also a big part of it. Everyone’s a sinner, no need to be all pretending pious when you get to go do your best to scandalize the priest a few times a year.

I was Catholic for 12 years after converting from Protestantism and am now more generically Christian. The Catholic Church has some rotten parts and some very good parts.

But it's a global organization that doesn't have much in the way of desire to kowtow to American supremacy and takes steps to avoid showing favoritism to it (why American papal candidates are always first eliminated).

They have nothing to gain and everything to lose by siding with an anti-family, anti-Catholic goofball against people from areas strong in Catholic sentiment.

[up][up]

Reminds me of an old joke - a man goes to Confession and says "Father, my wife passed away last year, and I just slept with 18-year-old twins." The priest asks "How long has it been since your last confession?" "Oh, never. I'm Jewish." "Wait, so why are you telling me this?" "I'm telling everybody!"

As for Trump's salute, even I'm not willing to slag off at him on that one, as most civilians aren't entirely familiar with protocol in that situation. That said, there are two major points to consider.

1) That's a huge PR win for North Korea, as they can now tout that Trump sees himself as an equal with a General, but not necessarily Kim himself.

2) I'm more than willing to slag off on the assholes that lambasted Obama for the "latte salute" but are keeping silent on this one.

Trumps threatens to ship 25 million Mexican-Americans to Japan: http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-25-million-mexicans-japan-shinzo-abe-immigration-2018-6

The US really has become Apartheid North America, and Japan is the last country who would take a bunch of Hispanics...

[up][up] We're definitely getting there, though, with Hispanic immigrant children being separated from their parents and kept in camps, police now murdering black people daily, becoming isolationist pricks and a pariah state, and the stuff the GOP and the supporters are saying and the laws they are trying to pass. Also, the Nazis talked about sending their Jewish population to Madagascar (another island nation) before setting up the death camps...

Lets not trivialize the Apartheid for the sake of hyperbolics.

Oh really when?
Imca (Veteran)
#245793: Jun 15th 2018 at 2:34:35 PM

The birthrate problem is a made up problem specificly because we don't have any imigration so to speak of.

Its actually higher then most of Western Europe, and significantly higher then Korea's.....

But without immigration, the natural birth rate of a developed nation doesn't reach replenishment.

Which is why the immigration requirements were lowered so much last year, the government finally realized that....

We are nowhere near Apartheid levels. That’s not a comment on how good our current situation is, it’s a comment on how bad Apartheid was.

When there are shoot-on-sight zones, forced relocations and removals with accompanying loss of citizenship, bans on innteracial marriage and statements on the superiority of the white race from every level of the government then we can say we’re nearing Apartheid territory.

They should have sent a poet.

If a Democrat wins in 2020, what's the actual prognosis for clearing up the mess Trump's made already? Because he already neatly cancelled out pretty much everything Obama got done with the exceptions of the ragged remnants of the ACA and then passed a massive tax cut to offset that. I'm guessing that 1.5 trillion in tax increases would be much harder to pass even if it did just cancel out the Trump cuts and reallocate that government spending to more productive ends, but most of the rest seems to be executive orders that IIRC are easy for a successive president to reverse.

There's not really an end date for "fixing" or "destroying" in the course of politics. Mostly because time keeps moving on and trying to pin an exact end date some point in the future is kind of pointless.

Anyway, with a blue wave we can halt things like attempting to entirely repeal the ACA, or start working on the amazing human rights violations going on right now.
