The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Depends if the Cabinet pulls its head out and invokes 25 before anything can go down.

They don’t have to refuse the order, they can just chose to understand “attack Canada” to mean “draw up battle plans for a possible military strike on Canada in 12 months time, get the plans sorted and possible outcomes determined and have me review them in 6 months if I remember to ask for them. Oh and don’t start working on this until I’ve submitted the order in writing to you, your direct superior and four other relevant figures in the military chain of command”.

And yeah Canada is part of NATO, so any attack there would trigger NATO, which I think would mean that the US was legally attacking itself.

[up][up][up] UCMJ only ever stipulates that personnel are required to follow lawful orders issued to them. The Army at least also has the Laws of Land Warfare, which lays out a requirement to disobey an order issued in direct violation of either domestic or international law. In practice this usually only applies to blatantly unlawful orders and usually not edge cases, but the situation we're discussing is a blatantly unlawful order.

War with Canada isn't even worth thinking about. It's simply not going to happen, you'd have to rewrite history for it to be in any way plausible.

This is ridiculous. We never had to debate the hypothetical/likelihood of going to war with fucking CANADA when Obama was president. Hell, not even when G.W. was president.

On another topic, here's a fantastic opinion piece written by a staunch conservative who never voted Democrat, but is now going to do so after seeing what Trump has done to the GOP. We welcome you!

I mean, I think people are discussing this more out of a morbid fascination with the theoretical scenario more than because the likelihood of it happening isn't zero.

I could have sworn this was @Real Donald Trump Fan or some other parody, but it's not.

Now that I am back from Singapore, where we had a great result with respect to North Korea, the thought process must sadly go back to the Witch Hunt, always remembering that there was No Collusion and No Obstruction of the fabricated No Crime.

I could absolutely see Trump at least trying to make it so that all of America's allies are now its enemies and its enemies are now its allies.
We have always been at war with EastAsia?
The only thing Trump needs are troops who obey when he tells them "You have to fire on x".
While we have plenty of thosenote , there is a big difference between the military agreeing to bomb a target in Syria, a country where we've been involved in military operations for a while, and agreeing to bomb a target in Canada our long-time ally and neighbor.
Trump just has to escalate the situation to a point at which "we need to shot back" sounds believable.
Trump claiming that "we need to shoot back first", I totally believe. Anyone in the military that makes it up to wearing stars on their collar is almost never someone stupid enough to buy into it.
It’s much more realist to worry about Trump ordering a nuclear strike on Iran than his starting a shooting war with Canada.
Also something I think is more likely for the military to go through with.
Trump's base would never approve of going to war on their own border with English-speaking white people.
I'm not sure about that. Give Trump a few more weeks of bad-mouthing Canada and they will, just like now over half of Republicans think Mueller's investigation is illegal.
Is there historical example of what happens when country's military is ordered to do something absurdly inhuman?
Historically, they do it, with the rare exception of a handful of objectors who usually end up killed/imprisoned for refusing to follow orders. sad
Depends if the Cabinet pulls its head out and invokes 25 before anything can go down.
Hahahahaha. If you're serious, I'll start crying while I'm laughing.
they can just chose to understand “attack Canada” to mean “draw up battle plans for a possible military strike on Canada in 12 months time, get the plans sorted and possible outcomes determined and have me review them in 6 months if I remember to ask for them.
We already have plans for attacking Canada. We have plans to attack everyone, just in case, but most of the ones for our allies aren't designed to be used in an actual attack.
I think people are discussing this more out of a morbid fascination with the theoretical scenario more than because the likelihood of it happening isn't zero.
... no, the likelihood of Trump ordering an actual attack on Canada is greater than zero.

He's mad today.

So, the Democrats make up a phony crime, Collusion with the Russians, pay a fortune to make the crime sound real, illegally leak (Comey) classified information so that a Special Councel will be appointed, and then Collude to make this pile of garbage take on life in Fake News!

The sleazy New York Democrats, and their now disgraced (and run out of town) A.G. Eric Schneiderman, are doing everything they can to sue me on a foundation that took in $18,800,000 and gave out to charity more money than it took in, $19,200,000. I won’t settle this case!......Schneiderman, who ran the Clinton campaign in New York, never had the guts to bring this ridiculous case, which lingered in their office for almost 2 years. Now he resigned his office in disgrace, and his disciples brought it when we would not settle.

For the record having a plan to invade an ally is actually a good idea even if you intend on remaining allies with them. Nations tend to be conquered or destabilize.

Let's say some other country invades Canada. We can adapt our plans to invade Canada to liberate them, too.

From the opposite perspective: Let's say (very hypothetically) the Southern States try to secede again. It would be in Canada's interests to help, and in the US's interests to accept said help. And if Canada had plans laying around to invade the US, they would be very useful here.

Few new updates.

1) The report on Comey's actions during the Clinton probe is out. It found that he did deviate from procedure at times (he didn't coordinate with DOJ superiors enough) but absolved him of political bias in either direction. It also concluded that Clinton did not evade charges thanks to political bias on anyone's part.

2) Trump was caught on camera returning the salute of a North Korean general.

Honestly this just seems.... petty.

Like there are quite a few examples of Trump being worryingly authoritarian, and returning a salute isn't really one of them.
