Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Thiel's a rather notable example of a Gay Conservative. He's homosexual and openly supports prominent Republicans...including Mike Pence.
This is on top of him being a stereotypical lolbertarian who fervently believes in the Austrian school of economics.
And he's a misogynist who has actually claimed that women gaining the right to vote was bad for the USA.

I dont see anything weird with that combo honestly.
I mean, is bad, but nothing special. Gay Conservative is a interesting mix, but his case looks pretty standard.

He is rich, so he know he is gonna be safe.
Lets be honest. Right Wingers always are about the money, some can take it to Enlightened Self-Interest, but most of them arent. Right Wing views are basically a worship of selfishness.
The Bigotry just got stuck there because there nothing more selfish than being a bigot.
I hate agreeing with the edgy teens that blame Right Wingers for all the evils in the world, but it seems that they are right for once.

Watch me destroying my countryAll the evils in the world? I'd think someone who lives in Peru, a country that has had to deal with more than one leftist terrorist group, would see why that's an exaggeration.
There's also, you know, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, etc.
And the Venezuelans we've got certainly don't have kind words to say about socialism these days.

Oh, I mean that I hate agreeing with their not-so-irrational hate of Conservatives. Obviously Right Wingers arent behind ALL evils on the world. Just most of them.

A sad tasteless joke:
"How can you be a Gay Conservative?"
"Because it's important that people understand I am not JUST gay. I'm also white."
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters."Kind of dicks" is an understatement. I've listed all of the problems with Thiel already. I've brought up why Musk is problematic. Zuckerberg should be obvious given all of the problems with Facebook that have cropped up. And Kalanick? Well, one needs only study Uber's history to know the problems with him.
And these people are just a few examples. I haven't even talked about Google's issues.

A couple of them also support things like UBI, because they think it will stave off desires for government regulation of their industries, and that they hope it will benefit their automation strategies (or at least make it more palatable when millions of jobs go away).

I've heard that the USA Right Wing was always bad in levels that are quite weird in Europe (Parties as bad as USA Right Wingers exist, but they appear time to time, not as half of the whole political spectrum). How true is that?
Also Sillicon Valley being Right Wing is expected and it shows that ultimately, they're just for money and bigotry

Watch me destroying my countrySo the first thing Trump does at the G7 is call for Russia to be let back in. They had been kicked out over the invasion and annexation of Crimea.
No collusion, of course. *eye roll*
(Sorry for the quick and dirty post, doing a quickie on my phone at work.)
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |I don't find GayConservatives any weirder than Black Republicans, really. Which is to say, yeah, I get why most aren't, but at the same time you can't expect ever single member of a demographic to sit in the same mold.
People can have individual reasons for doing things, even if looking as an outside observer those reasons just look delusional and/or vile.

There's an allure to the GOP platform for people who feel that they are independently successful and resent other people for "taking" their hard-earned money. This transcends race.

Here’s the first article from another source that wasn’t a 3 sentence stub. Apparently Italy’s new right wing is echoing Trump. Surprise, surprise.
Naturally, he said it right after blasting Canada and getting into verbal jousting with Macron. Doing a Game of Thrones style walk of shame just before being hung in public and having his bloated carcass left there as a warning is too good for the son of a bitch.

Ha. Politics being morally complex? A good meme from fiction

Watch me destroying my country

You might be wondering what the deal was with that crack at Peter Thiel. Well, Thiel's someone who seems to believe that it's possible to extend your lifespan by getting blood transfusions from young people.
So it's not enough that he's a metaphorical vampire like so many Silicon Valley technocrat bros. He wants to be a literal one.
