The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump tweets continued.

6/4

This is my 500th. Day in Office and we have accomplished a lot - many believe more than any President in his first 500 days. Massive Tax & Regulation Cuts, Military & Vets, Lower Crime & Illegal Immigration, Stronger Borders, Judgeships, Best Economy & Jobs EVER, and much more.......We had Repeal & Replace done (and the saving to our country of one trillion dollars) except for one person, but it is getting done anyway. Individual Mandate is gone and great, less expensive plans will be announced this month. Drug prices coming down & Right to Try!

As has been stated by numerous legal scholars, I have the absolute right to PARDON myself, but why would I do that when I have done nothing wrong? In the meantime, the never ending Witch Hunt, led by 13 very Angry and Conflicted Democrats (& others) continues into the mid-terms! note

China already charges a tax of 16% on soybeans. Canada has all sorts of trade barriers on our Agricultural products. Not acceptable!

The U.S. has made such bad trade deals over so many years that we can only WIN!

Farmers have not been doing well for 15 years. Mexico, Canada, China and others have treated them unfairly. By the time I finish trade talks, that will change. Big trade barriers against U.S. farmers, and other businesses, will finally be broken. Massive trade deficits no longer!

The appointment of the Special Counsel is totally UNCONSTITUTIONAL! Despite that, we play the game because I, unlike the Democrats, have done nothing wrong!

The Fake News Media is desperate to distract from the economy and record setting economic numbers and so they keep talking about the phony Russian Witch Hunt.

In many ways this is the greatest economy in the HISTORY of America and the best time EVER to look for a job! note

6/5

Big Supreme Court ruling for Baker just out!

The Philadelphia Eagles Football Team was invited to the White House. Unfortunately, only a small number of players decided to come, and we canceled the event. Staying in the Locker Room for the playing of our National Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling. Sorry!

What is taking so long with the Inspector General’s Report on Crooked Hillary and Slippery James Comey. Numerous delays. Hope Report is not being changed and made weaker! There are so many horrible things to tell, the public has the right to know. Transparency! note

We will proudly be playing the National Anthem and other wonderful music celebrating our Country today at 3 P.M., The White House, with the United States Marine Band and the United States Army Chorus. Honoring America! NFL, no escaping to Locker Rooms! note

We have had many Championship teams recently at the White House including the Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Penguins, New England Patriots, Alabama and Clemson National Champions, and many others. National Anthem & more great music today at 3:00 P.M.

The Russian Witch Hunt Hoax continues, all because Jeff Sessions didn’t tell me he was going to recuse himself...I would have quickly picked someone else. So much time and money wasted, so many lives ruined...and Sessions knew better than most that there was No Collusion!

Separating families at the Border is the fault of bad legislation passed by the Democrats. Border Security laws should be changed but the Dems can’t get their act together! Started the Wall.

Get the vote out in California today for Rep. Kevin Mc Carthy and all of the great GOP candidates for Congress. Keep our country out of the hands of High Tax, High Crime Nancy Pelosi.

Vote for Congressman Devin Nunes, a true American Patriot the likes of which we rarely see in our modern day world....he truly loves our country and deserves everyone’s support!

Senator @Roger Wicker of Mississippi has done everything necessary to Make America Great Again! Get out and vote for Roger, he has my total support!

Senator @Roger Wicker of Mississippi has done everything necessary to Make America Great Again! Get out and vote for Roger, he has my total support! [[note]] he doesn't read

Imagine how much wasteful spending we’d save if we didn’t have Chuck and Nancy standing in our way! For years, Democrats in Congress have depleted our military and busted our budgets on needless spending, and to what end? No more.

6/6

This is where things start to need a bit of explanation. He is literally getting Conspiracy theories from right wing blogs other right wing blogs think are crazy

Wow, Strzok-Page, the incompetent & corrupt FBI lovers, have texts referring to a counter-intelligence operation into the Trump Campaign dating way back to December, 2015. SPYGATE is in full force! Is the Mainstream Media interested yet? Big stuff!

Great interview by @Lou Dobbs with Chris Farrell of Judicial Watch concerning the governments counter-intelligence operation into the Trump Campaign. SPYGATE at the highest level. Who would believe?

Chris Farrell, Judicial Watch. “They were running an operation to undermine a candidate for President of the U.S. These are all violations of law. This is intelligence tradecraft to steer an election. There’s nothing more grave when it comes to abuse of our intelligence system......This is a level of criminality beyond the pale. This is such a grave abuse of power and authority, it’s like nothing else we’ve seen in our history. This makes the Nixon Watergate burglary look like keystone cop stuff [[note]] someone's actions were, but not the FBI's [[note]] ....The greatest Witch Hunt in political history!

Mitch Mc Connell announced he will cancel the Senate’s August Recess. Great, maybe the Democrats will finally get something done other than their acceptance of High Crime and High Taxes. We need Border Security!

Great night for Republicans! Congratulations to John Cox on a really big number in California. He can win. Even Fake News CNN said the Trump impact was really big, much bigger than they ever thought possible. So much for the big Blue Wave, it may be a big Red Wave. Working hard!

Gold Star father, Ceejay Metcalf, whose great son Michael was just honored at the White House, was fantastic this morning on @foxandfriends. He is a special man!

The Fake News Media has been so unfair, and vicious, to my wife and our great First Lady, Melania. During her recovery from surgery they reported everything from near death, to facelift, to left the W.H. (and me) for N.Y. or Virginia, to abuse. All Fake, she is doing really well!...Four reporters spotted Melania in the White House last week walking merrily along to a meeting. They never reported the sighting because it would hurt the sick narrative that she was living in a different part of the world, was really ill, or whatever. Fake News is really bad!

Many more Republican voters showed up yesterday than the Fake News thought possible. The political pundits just don’t get what is going on out there - or they do get it but refuse to report the facts! Remember, Dems are High Tax, High Crime, easy to beat!

Congratulations to Dana Rohrabacher on his big California win. We are proud of you Dana!

6/7

Alan Dershowitz, Harvard Law Professor: “It all proves that we never needed a Special Counsel....All of this could have been done by the Justice Dept. Don’t need a multi-million dollar group of people with a target on someone’s back. Not the way Justice should operate.” So true!

When and where will all of the many conflicts of interest be listed by the 13 Angry Democrats (plus) working on the Witch Hunt Hoax. There has never been a group of people on a case so biased or conflicted. It is all a Democrat Excuse for LOSING the Election. Where is the server?

How could Jeff Flake, who is setting record low polling numbers in Arizona and was therefore humiliatingly forced out of his own Senate seat without even a fight (and who doesn’t have a clue), think about running for office, even a lower one, again? Let’s face it, he’s a Flake!

Our Justice Department must not let Awan & Debbie Wasserman Schultz off the hook. The Democrat I.T. scandal is a key to much of the corruption we see today. They want to make a “plea deal” to hide what is on their Server. Where is Server? Really bad!

When will people start saying, “thank you, Mr. President, for firing James Comey?”

The Obama Administration is now accused of trying to give Iran secret access to the financial system of the United States. This is totally illegal. Perhaps we could get the 13 Angry Democrats to divert some of their energy to this “matter” (as Comey would call it). Investigate!

For the record, I was not a fan of the whole "Melania's secretly ill/Melania escaped the White House!" rumors that were floating around in the last few weeks. This is the kind of crap that some flung at Hillary (the ill stuff, anyway), we* don't need to sink to that level. There's plenty of real stuff from this administration to criticize.

  • Not necessarily anybody in this thread but the "we" in general.

[up][up][up]It mostly refers to laissez-faire capitalism which was the standard liberal economic ideology until the early part of the twentieth century when they shifted to a more welfare focused program, and then re-surging again in the latter half of the twentieth century around the 70s and 80s (at least in political spheres, it existed for longer in academic ones).

That's why it is refereed to as Neoliberlaism.

[up]x4 Neoliberalism is a Political Philosophy that espouses the idea of Laissez-Faire Free Market Capitalism, IE only Businesses should get involved in average people's lives, not Governments. As such, Neoliberalism advocates the complete destruction of Government Oversight, Regulations, and even Safety nets; arguing that Businesses will take care of every person's needs, and better then any Government could.

[up] It derives its name from Classical (Economic) Liberalism, which was the original form of Capitalism. It was referred to as Liberalism because before then, Mercantilism (an Economic System where Governments sought to maximize Trade with Private Companies under their Control) was the dominant Economic form through out Europe.

@Sci Fi Slasher In politics? Anything more right-wing than you that you happen to disagree with.

In economics, it's the very market-friendly set of models and theories developed in the eighties and nineties out of old classical economics after Keynes' consensus broke down. Integrate, globalise, deregulate, privatise, hand responsibilities away from the politicians because they can't be trusted with them, hence independent central banks, massive outsourcing of government duties, trade deals without proper compensation for imbalances. Centre-left parties following that then tend to offer training programs and subsidies and such, which can often fail to make up for a complete lack of job security and wage-based race to the bottom that means that there just aren't enough jobs in the country anymore, no matter how well you train your workers, because it's cheaper to pay third world wages and benefits at your manufacturing location and ship the stuff back.

In the technical sense it's characterized by a tendency to try to develop macroeconomic policy from microeconomic foundations, which sounds nice until you realise they roll everyone doing anything in the economy into a single "representative consumer" and assume basically linear supply/demand curves a lot of the time, which is a bit like trying to extrapolate the weather from the dynamics of a water molecule. No such thing as a "snowflake molecule", since these systems have emergent properties that are more than the sum of their parts.

Until very recently the models the neoliberal economists were using didn't include private debt, banks or money, because they started from first principles and assumed that using currency was just a more expedient method of barter and that debt was just shuffling money around to different parts of the "representative consumer" so it had little significant aggregate effect. That turned out well, because of course when people go bankrupt they don't pay their debts back anyway, and millionaires and bricklayers do spend in different ways.

Others have summarized neoliberalism nicely, and I will point out that the only party that supports neoliberal policy is the Republican Party. The Democratic Party most certainly does not and is hardly going to start supporting it, it just wouldn't make any sense considering that the base wants the government to start doing more not less.

Incidentally, since the word "liberal" is currently so deeply associated with social liberalism in the English-speaking word, people tend to misuse the words to describe left-leaning politicians like the Clintons, with the implicit assumption that the "neo" part of the word implies a departure from hard social liberalism. What these people are probably thinking of is the kind of business-friendly centrist policies pioneered by the likes of Tony Blair or Gerhard Schröder around the turn of the milennium — which, while it may be influenced by it, is not the same thing as neoliberalism.

Exclusive: U.S. sending 1,600 immigration detainees to federal prisons [1]

At Victorville, the prison getting the largest number of people, workers are moving about 500 inmates in a medium-security facility to make space, said John Kostelnik, local president for the American Federation of Government Employees Council of Prison Locals union.

(Reuters) - U.S. authorities are transferring into federal prisons about 1,600 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees, officials told Reuters on Thursday, in the first large-scale use of federal prisons to hold detainees amid a Trump administration crackdown on people entering the country illegally.

An ICE spokeswoman told Reuters five federal prisons will temporarily take in detainees awaiting civil immigration court hearings, including potential asylum seekers, with one prison in Victorville, California, preparing to house 1,000 people.

Officials of a prison employees' union said the influx of ICE detainees, who were arrested at the border or elsewhere in the United States by immigration officials, raises questions about prison staffing and safety.

Union leaders at prisons in California, Texas and Washington state who spoke to Reuters said they had little time to prepare for the large intake of detainees.

At Victorville, the prison getting the largest number of people, workers are moving about 500 inmates in a medium-security facility to make space, said John Kostelnik, local president for the American Federation of Government Employees Council of Prison Locals union.

Is this legal?

(Although, now that I think about it, it still might be better than private prisons, as sad as that is.)
