The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump isn't tariffing anyone over 1812, but the fact is that he has zero legal standing to tariff allied states without Congressional approval. Problem is that no one is enforcing the justification,so he can de facto tariff at will.

No, he's saying the War of 1812 proves Canada is a threat to US national security.

I don't believe that he was his direct intent (insomuch as Trump has a logical thought process), it was a quip because he has no real justification.

I figured it just boiled down to Our Lawyers Advised This Trope - after all, Trump's lawyers haven't proven very competent.

Edit: Adding my post from the last page to the page-topper, especially since the first story is quite relevant.

Welp, Giuliani had an Open Mouth, Insert Foot moment bigger than Bolton's -

"Well, somehow North Korea, after he cancelled the summit because they insulted the vice-president, they insulted his national security advisor and they also said that they would go to nuclear war against us, they were going to defeat us in a nuclear war. We said, well we're not gonna have a summit under those circumstances. What Kim Jong Un got back on his hands and knees and begged for it, which is exactly the position you wanna put him in,
Courtesy of CBS by way of the Wall Street Journal.

In other news, the Mesa, Arizona police department suspended 4 officers due to Police Brutality against an unarmed, non-violent suspect. And he's still getting charged with Disorderly Conduct.

As a result of the incident, the Mesa Police Department has changed its use-of-force policy so that officers can only hit people in the head or face if they become physically violent, officials said. Previously, the policy could be interpreted that it was acceptable for an officer punch someone even before they turned violent.

This is, notably, the same Department in which an officer shot a man begging for his life, yet was found Not Guilty because he mistook the man reaching for his waistband to pull up his shorts as his reaching for a gun.

And in Immigration news, ICE arrested 114 employees at two Ohio properties belonging to Corso's Flower & Garden Center - and yet no charges have been filed against the company that hired so many illegal immigrants. Yay double-standards!

Basically, Trump sees the trade status quo as weakening America in all aspects, so any country that doesn't accept an unequal FTA to the point of becoming an American tributary is threatening national security because only one partner can win.

I'd wonder if Trump thought the war of 1812 happened at 6:12 pm, but we know he was never in the military so he probably wouldn't think of that.

FBI director tells Louisville agents to ignore criticism from DC [1]

FBI Director Christopher Wray told officials and agency partners Wednesday in Louisville that recent criticisms from from Washington, D.C., were distracting and irrelevant to their mission.

"The things that make a difference are the lives of the people we are trying to protect," Wray said. "Not whether or not somebody is scoring points on television or the internet."

While Wray did not specifically mention President Donald Trump, a vocal critic of the FBI's investigation into Russian influence in the 2016 election, the timing of his remarks falls as conservatives and the White House critique the agency.

So far, only conservative media blogs have reported allegations that a counter-intelligence operation was mentioned in the series of text messages between Strzork and Page.

Top Republicans, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, said Wednesday that there was "no evidence" to support that the FBI spied on Trump's campaign, according to NPR.

Wray was appointed by Trump several weeks after he fired former director James Comey last August.

Since becoming FBI director, Wray said he wanted to visit the 56 FBI field offices across the country to talk with law enforcement, but the "occasional distraction inside the beltway" has made it difficult at times. On Wednesday, he spoke with local officials and the media during a press conference at the FBI office in eastern Louisville.

"My message to our agents and partners is to stay focused on the work and on the mission," Wray added.

Trump has been at odds with the FBI since special prosecutor Robert Muller began investigating Trump for Russian influence in the 2016 election. Trump has called it a "witch hunt" and has accused the FBI of being biased against him.

Wray said he hopes agents are not dissuaded from the national criticism and focus on their roles within the agency.

"I think as long as people stay focused on that, that stuff endures in the long run," Wray said. "This other stuff is fleeting in my view and is largely noise."

Good on him for that.
