The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up]I wonder if the DOJ or other appropriate US departments could do that?

...Admittedly, if they did, there'd be absolutely no GOP opposition to him removing Rosenstein.

Trump tweet dump, there are some remarkable ones here

The recusal of Jeff Sessions was an unforced betrayal of the President of the United States.” JOE DIGENOVA, former U.S. Attorney.

RUSH LIMBAUGH “If the FBI was so concerned, and if they weren’t targeting Trump, they should have told Trump. If they were really concerned about the Russians infiltrating a campaign (hoax), then why not try to stop it? Why not tell Trump? Because they were pushing this scam

Iger, where is my call of apology? You and ABC have offended millions of people, and they demand a response. How is Brian Ross doing? He tanked the market with an ABC lie, yet no apology. Double Standard!

The corrupt Mainstream Media is working overtime not to mention the infiltration of people, Spies (Informants), into my campaign! Surveillance much?

Not that it matters but I never fired James Comey because of Russia! The Corrupt Mainstream Media loves to keep pushing that narrative, but they know it is not true!

Will be giving a Full Pardon to Dinesh D’Souza today. He was treated very unfairly by our government!

FAIR TRADE!

A.P. has just reported that the Russian Hoax Investigation has now cost our government over $17 million, and going up fast. No Collusion, except by the Democrats!

Why aren’t they firing no talent Samantha Bee for the horrible language used on her low ratings show? A total double standard but that’s O.K., we are Winning, and will be doing so for a long time to come!

Canada has treated our Agricultural business and Farmers very poorly for a very long period of time. Highly restrictive on Trade! They must open their markets and take down their trade barriers! They report a really high surplus on trade with us. Do Timber & Lumber in U.S.?

One bit of good news regarding that pro-pedophilia candidate - his views were so extreme that the Libertarian Party kicked him out in February 2017.

And in decidedly more depressing news, not only has the Israeli Defense Force killed a Palestinian nurse who was trying to help someone else that had been shot (though to their credit, they are launching an investigation into it), the US exercised its Veto power in the UN to quash a Kuwaiti resolution calling for the protection of Palestinian civilians.

I absolutely hate to say this, but sometimes the shit Israel pulls (and subsequently gets away with) has me considering them as a Token Evil Teammate. Rationally, I know that's not the case, but if this were any other country in the world we'd be condemning them for using unnecessary force.

Honestly, Samantha Bee should not have apologized. They have done so much worse, and apologizing makes The Left look weak the people who's votes count more, (unfortunately) so unless there is a call for violence we just plain should not give The Right the apologies they don't deserve.

As pointed out, though, the timing of her comment in light of the Roseanne tweet allowed those on the right to present it as a hypocritical situation, as Roseanne got the plug pulled on her show, but Bee's will remain on the air. It doesn't matter what differences there are, the situations are similar enough that the comparison has been made.

Actually trying to act mean would chase off the voters we need to win over. The ones who see apologies as weak are probably set.

[up]Not sure, especially since a lot that didn't vote last time are probably Bernie Bros who wouldn't want to look weak to the oppressors. Plus, if we keep apologizing we let them win, like with the Keurig smashing which the company had no actual reason to apologize for.

Honestly, it is just bad optics to appear "weak" so we need to stop that in time for 2020.

[up][up]Fair point, but the people yelling "both sides" typically are just doing it to say "democrats are evil too so vote republican" so they wouldn't be swayed, and most people are not swayed by them.

One bit of good news regarding that pro-pedophilia candidate - his views were so extreme that the Libertarian Party kicked him out in February 2017.
So now he's running as a Republican? Or an independent?

The issue for me is that, given how long the conflict has gone on, it's nearly Hatfield/McCoy levels of Grey-and-Gray Morality. Each side has done reprehensible shit to the other, and it's getting to the point of He Who Fights Monsters with Israel's actions.

And they don't exactly do themselves favors when, for example, they manage a precision strike on Hamas' military commander while he's driving (though immediately posting the footage to YouTube could be considered distasteful), but then 4 days later obliterate a home, killing an entire family including 5 children. That's propaganda that practically writes itself for Hamas to recruit others.

And even worse now that I've read that Wikipedia entry, as Israel subsequently pulled a Bush and shifted who the target was and fell back on "It's tragic when a terror operative is hiding among civilians but unfortunately it is part of Hamas and Islamic Jihad tactics." They also didn't exactly provide evidence of their claims that the policeman they (eventually) stated was the intended target actually had terrorist ties. And given that the IDF has shown willingness to wipe out an entire home of people in order to kill their one target, that's Not So Different from Trump wanting to target the families of terrorists, which we rightly condemned him over.

And it'd be one thing if the US was backing Israel while also calling them out over shit like this - but that latter half tends not to happen.

Texas Supreme Court: Texas must reveal it's lethal injection suppliers.

note

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice must reveal the name of the pharmacy that has supplied deadly execution drugs, the state’s highest civil court affirmed on Friday.

Last May, the Austin-based 3rd Court of Appeals ruled that the agency had to provide that information, despite its argument that doing so could endanger the supplier. The Texas Supreme Court declined this week to hear the agency’s appeal, leaving the lower court ruling in place.

The plaintiffs, three death row lawyers in Texas, said on Friday that they hoped the state would now finally honor the original district court's 2014 order that commanded the state to disclose the information.

"Today’s decision is a win for the fundamental principles of transparency and open government,” said Maurie Levin in a statement.

The state has continually fought not to identify their 2014 supplier under the original court ruling.

“Disclosing the identity of the pharmacy will result in the harassment of the business and will raise serious safety concerns for the business and its employees,” TDCJ spokesman Jason Clark told the Austin American-Statesman at the time.

The state has 15 days to file a motion for the court to reconsider its decision, according to a court clerk. The department said Friday it plans to do so.

The lawsuit was filed in 2014 after Gov. Greg Abbott, then the attorney general, said the state could withhold the information because drug suppliers faced “real harm.” That was a reversal of three of his own previous rulings that the information was public.

When challenged in court, lawyers for the agency argued that the pharmacy’s identity was an exception to the Texas Public Information Act, which aims to protect the public’s right to know about how taxpayers’ money is spent. But the appeals court said last May that information did not need to be shielded because the agency failed to show that the pharmacy would face “substantial threat of physical harm.”

The Texas Legislature passed a law in 2015 shielding the identity of the supplier and anyone else involved in an execution after the law passed. But in the meantime, this years-old case has continued to progress, with the plaintiffs fighting to reveal the name of its suppliers before the law passed. TDCJ would not be required to release the name of more recent suppliers.

Since 2013, the department has used compounding pharmacies to obtain doses of pentobarbital, the drug it currently uses in executions. The state has not received a new supply of drugs since February 2017, according to records obtained by The Texas Tribune.

Currently, there are nine executions scheduled in Texas and nine doses of pentobarbital in stock, according to records received by the department Friday morning. But at least five of those executions are scheduled after the beyond-use dates, similar to an expiration date, have passed.

So, um, let's talk about the economy report yesterday. Apparently the economy is booming. While this is obviously good news (although it goes without saying that I can't stand Trump gloating nonstop about it), I'm concerned we're gonna lose 2018 and 2020 because of it. I mean, yes, we have a lot of platforms to run on, but the economy is a big one. If we can't point to the economy and say "It sucks, vote for us and we'll improve it", that's not good.

That said, the effects of the tariff war he just started may negate this. And I do have to wonder if the only reason it's booming is because the regulations have been lessened... said regulations which are often in place for a reason.

Trump’s Lawyers, in Confidential Memo, Argue to Head Off a Historic Subpoena

WASHINGTON — President Trump’s lawyers have for months quietly waged a campaign to keep the special counsel from trying to force him to answer questions in the investigation into whether he obstructed justice, asserting that he cannot be compelled to testify and arguing in a confidential letter that he could not possibly have committed obstruction because he has unfettered authority over all federal investigations.

Regarding Samantha Bee, some of the stuff she said was genuinely Dude, Not Funny!, such as her crack about how Ivanka should wear a low-cut top while asking Trump not to break up families. Whether Ivanka deserves that isn't the point, we shouldn't be encouraging that kind of attitude toward women.

Every time I hear someone say the economy's booming or we have so many jobs, I just remember how long and how fucking HARD it was for me to find a fulltime job at minimum wage (which I only got because of a special program,) or how a number of people on This Very Wiki are depressed because they're struggling or can't find any work. When we don't have as many people struggling just to make ends meet, maybe I'll believe them.

Its a combination of solid management (thanks, Obama!) and an unsustainable over stimulation of the economy via deregulation and tax cuts. Trade war or no, it will come crashing down. And Trump's weakness in every other area other than North Korea (and that's a big maybe) is hobbling the credit he gets on these files, its the only thing keeping him above water among Independents.

There is no way that a trade war won't cause massive economic issues, US consumers will pay more for products that the US can't make anymore.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
