Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

What. What in the actual FUCK?
So Newsweek, its not ok for Roseanne Barr to make the joke she did but calling a woman a "feckless cunt" is ok? Because the way this article is written sure gives the impression you do.
WTF Just Happened Today's feed
is up. It's still early and stuff may yet be added, so not doing the full dump yet, but this caught my eye:
Newly-released voter registration data from California show the Republican party trailing behind both Democrats and "no party preference" voters. The California Republican Party has effectively been relegated to third-party status, falling behind independent voters by at least 73,000, leaving them with only 25.1 percent of registered California voters.

Sexism from a woman to a woman? Mmmhmm. Poke that logic again, I don't think it's fully baked.
Put like that, at first glance it doesn't sound all that different from one man mocking another over sex or some other toxic masculinity scenario.
Though I don't think this specific situation qualifies since, here, the remarks are based on mockery of things Trump has said and actions Ivanka has taken, all if which were public.

Women being sexist to other women isn't unheard of, but it's also getting off-topic.
The difference between Bee and Barr is that Bee is (largely) "punching up" in her mocking Ivanka; that said I don't think it was funny, which should always be the first thing a comedian is concerned about.
That’s the epitome of privilege right there, not considering armed nazis a threat to your life. - SilaswLooking at what the tweet was, I'm not even sure how it's a joke, or if it was even intended to be. It just seems like a flat out insult. Which you could say that Ivanka has earned, but I don't think gendered insults like that are particularly big anymore among "progressive" or whatever circles.
It is an easy way to call out hypocrisy though. Say if some right-wing groups start calling for her show to be cancelled for being sexist, just like they did for Colbert made that joke and they screamed bloody murder about him being homophobic.

Trump's apparently considering pardoning Martha Stewart (for insider trading) and, more worryingly, former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich (who is serving a lengthy jail term for corruption, including trying to sell then President-Elect Obama's Senate seat).
Law. And. Order.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Nobody on the right gets to say a single damn word about intolerance.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Eh, Ivanka's a cunt. It's true, and I have no problem with anyone saying it.
I think most gendered insults have lost the gendered implications. Ivanka is a terrible person who deserves to be insulted. Not like Magnificent Bastard or Bitch in Sheep's Clothing are tropes that only apply to men and women, respectively. Cunt is a harsher curse than either of the two mentioned above, but I feel it's still appropriate, given the actions of who it's aimed at.
There are certain slurs that still carry a gendered implication, like "slut" and "whore", but I think "cunt", specifically, has changed in just the past few years to be more inclusive.
I think the point here is that Sam Bee's use of that insult was completely intentional and forethought, and not in the least bit sexist. Insults are supposed to be, well, insulting — especially public ones like this.
Also, Sam is well known for claiming "C" word privileges.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

Let's see if Congressional Republicans try and put a quick end to this.
