Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

re: Roseanne's cancellation
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go put some change into the Holy Grail reference jar.

As an update, the Amber Alert for Owen Hidalgo Calderon has been cancelled
- not because they've found him, but because it's now been 6 days since the two went missing (4 since she was found dead), and the mentality has shifted to a recovery effort, rather than rescue.
I'm curious.
Does anyone have any ideas for a better territory model? The situation in Puerto Rico is shameful. They are American citizens, yet thousands still don't have electricity or access to healthcare, but have no say in our Government because they don't have representatives.
Would the best option be pushing for statehood? That would have it's own problems I imagine, though. (It would never happen under this adminstration though)

If I remember correctly, in the latest referendum, there was high support for statehood among people who voted. The problem was that only about 25 percent of eligible voters actually voted, which makes it an invalid measure of public support.
Statehood would be problematic for a number of reasons, though. Less then ten percent of Puerto Rican's speak English as their primary language, and 75 percent only speak it "not very well". How would that work, you think?

That's why Democrats have to win. Drive the Republicans back to their caves.
The Republicans are the obstacle to every positive change that could be undertaken. It doesn't matter what we're talking about, it's just assumed that the GOP will be a problem. So we can't worry about GOP opposition; it'll always be there, no matter what we do.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."I don’t really see why language would be an issue. There are plenty of countries where multiple languages are common.
The real issue is that Puerto Rico, like many Latin American countries, has a somewhat dim view of the US.

They should have sent a poet. The point is that many in Puerto Rico don't see themselves as the U.S. or American, and don't want to see themselves as such. It's not even all about resenting the United States, either.
Most people seem to recognize they couldn't make it as an independent country, but that's not the same thing as wanting to be a state either, otherwise all those referendums wouldn't be necessary.

Link doesn't say, but I assume it's because of all the mounting cases against him, including the one in Missouri's Congress to impeach him.
Good riddance to that scum. My greatest hope would be for Trump to do the same, sooner rather then later.
