Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Do we know for certain if it really is just that division and that the rest of the organization's institutional culture hasn't been similarly compromised?
Either way ERO seems to make a sizable portion of ICE's operations and personnel. I doubt you could just remove them without severally effecting the rest of the organization.

ICE has about 20,000 employees, and of that I think ERO is maybe 5-6,000 people. That's where Trump's whole "ICE needs more guys" line comes from. They could pretty easily be disbanded wholesale without affecting the rest of the agency's operations.
It used to be that deportation was just a secondary task everyone had, but they spun off into their own division maybe a year after ICE was founded. I'm not too sure why, but I assume the reason is highly racist.
I don't really see any need for a specialized deportation force, unless there's some sort of outstanding exception I don't think anyone should be deported.
Maybe that wasn't the best wording, I just meant that they're the agency who investigates cases of human trafficking, both to and from the US.

They should have sent a poet.On the topic of agenda-driven mass shooters. If anything, it would be worse for them because there are just so many shootings these days that they just fall out of the news cycle after a few days unless it's a truly horrendous thing with a death count of over 20. And the fact that now we could very well have some sort of ranking for how important a mass shooting is and how long it stays in the news cycle is horrifying.
Actually that may be a slight blessing in disguise, since if it was still under the old system it's likely that all of the members of ICE would have been pressed into deportation services by Trump, likely to detriment of all of the agency's other functions.
You know how that you can block people on Twitter for just about any reason that you deem worthy?
Well, life is different when you're the President of U.S.A.
What if they read it for Bile Fascination, a desire the know what the hell he's going to try to do next, or some form of opposition research?
Hopefully I'll feel confident to change my avatar off this scumbag soon. Apologies to any scumbags I insulted. But sometimes he says some good stuff on there, like that time he claims that he had an shiny red button on his desk, or "kerfufu."
Sometimes I wonder that he makes an better comedian than an politician.
Answer no master, never the slave Carry your dreams down into the grave Every heart, like every soul, equal to breakIt's a specific case of my belief that things would be better if everyone just refused to acknowledge Trump's existence at all.
Like, for example, if everyone at the White House pretended that, due to some bizarre loophole into the political system, there currently isn't a president, things would probably be running a lot smoother.

Well, the tweets this morning weren't written by him, since they don't fit with the established pattern of spitting back Fox and Friends at 6 in the morning, and he was going to the Naval Academy Graduation Ceremony. The remarkable thing about that is, well, I'll show you.
Can anyone even imagine having Spies placed in a competing campaign, by the people and party in absolute power, for the sole purpose of political advantage and gain? And to think that the party in question, even with the expenditure of far more money, LOST!
“Everyone knows there was a Spy, and in fact the people who were involved in the Spying are admitting that there was a Spy...Widespread Spying involving multiple people.” Mollie Hemingway, The Federalist Senior Editor But the corrupt Mainstream Media hates this monster story!
Democrats are so obviously rooting against us in our negotiations with North Korea. Just like they are coming to the defense of MS 13 thugs, saying that they are individuals & must be nurtured, or asking to end your big Tax Cuts & raise your taxes instead. Dems have lost touch!
Very good news to receive the warm and productive statement from North Korea. We will soon see where it will lead, hopefully to long and enduring prosperity and peace. Only time (and talent) will tell!
Since they must have been written by a staffer, that means that someone's actually paid to write tweets about the Deep State's Conspiracy against him.

There was a story tendency that the staffers who write Trump's tweets add the various little grammatical errors and quirks he types with.
Something I find personally disturbing since that means these people are actively dumbing down their tweets so people will believe they came from the President of the United States of America.
So I'm currently M84's right now.

They wanted a President who didn't make them feel bad for being stupid. Trump is the greatest Anti-Intellectual champion that's ever been.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) has lost the endorsement of the National Association of Realtors after expressing the belief that sellers/homeowners should be able to refuse to sell homes to LGBTQ people.
His exact words: "We've drawn a line on racism, but I don't think we should extend that line". In other words "its bad enough we have to sell homes to blacks, but let's do our best to keep the gays out."

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
Local Politics often historically tend to be less overtly partisan anyway.
Part of the problem is that on a National Level, the republicans have kicked out moderate and liberal members of the party, so there's no cross-the-isle coalition or consensus building, because the parties are so seperated ideologically.
Our Government is designed to force compromise among different factions, but when there is very little common ground, it doesn't work. There's also no protection from the fringe crazies who in a functioning government, would be hopefully kept from gaining to much power by a majority centerist coalition.

Ugh... and in a nightmare coming to fruition, an AMBER Alert has been issued for a 14-month old baby after his mother was found dead in the woods, and her boyfriend arrested
.
The reason I prefaced it as such is this - emphasis added
So yep - the ICE crackdown has officially made people more hesitant to approach authorities about criminal activities. The party of Law And Order, everybody.
And another source in which a Wayne County sheriff echoed the same sentiment
.
He said he doesn't care if the victim of a crime is in this country legally or illegally. "We will fight for you," Virts said.
...
Hidalgo-Calderon was in the process of being deported and her family was in the process of applying for asylum, Fuentes said. Hidalgo-Calderon had been making all of her court dates, which were in the Buffalo area, Fuentes said. Her next court appearance was scheduled for June 5.
And given what we've seen ICE do in the past year, those reassurances will likely fall on deaf ears. And I can only imagine how Trump will paint this, as her boyfriend is also here illegally.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"
