The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Prohibit selling more ammo without returning an equal number of cases.

Bonus points, you get the metal back.

[up] You'd still run into a lot of problems with that.

Limiting ammo, magazines, different parts and features are all just band aids covering up the fact that it's way too easy to get your hands on a gun and the systems for regulating use are too inconsistent.

But that's the point. You're not going to solve the problem by focusing on a few big things, you have to do all the little things as well.

I am extremely skeptical of the idea of limiting ammo.

In rural areas guns are necessary for self-defense and stopping animals from harming your property, the former might be compatible with a ammo limit but the latter certainly is not. Frankly this is the kind of idea that I think has more costs then benefits and I don't see why it should be pursued over proper gun control.

How do you acquire ammo if you don't have any? What if cases get lost? What about the people that're over the limit when the law goes into effect? Is ammo pooling allowed? How do we deal with the black market (that manufacturers will be encouraging)? What about black powder rifles? Do we have a way of stopping forgeries? Are there exceptions for ranges? If so, how do we keep the ammo there?

No surprise there.

@Ammo limits: The other thing is also that making ammo and cases for it is pretty easy with the right know-how.

Ryan can't ignore Dreamers anymore; either way they're going to be saved, it all depends on whether they'll be saved, or if they'll be saved with a Wall and Immigration Restrictions tied to their legs.

Yeah, I was talking to someone who grew up with a Vietnamese kid (who's now a preacher) who learned how to fill ammunition when he was a tween. Granted, it still takes the right tools and know-how, but it's not as complex as some might assume - the fancy stuff (armor piercing, hollow point, etc.) would be largely off the table, but those bans won't happen anyway.

[up][up][up] Making the components themselves requires large machinery and is generally out of reach for civilians, but reloading spent brass is common practice. You aren't really ever going to be able to make ammunition from scratch.

If there wasn’t already tons of ammo out there it wouldn’t, but with how much is already in circulation people can break any ammo limit by just already having over the limit and reloading it at home.

Ammo is also a lot easier to smuggle than guns are. If you really want to restrict the ability of mass murderers to use firearms, you just make them more expensive (increasing the licensing fees will work). The more they cost, the fewer there are, and the less likely they are to be used in a mass shooting. An AR-15 costs less than $450 dollars on the internet now. Double that, and you would probably half the number of times they get used in mass shootings (and not just the AR-15, but any magazine fed semi-auto weapon).

I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.

You’d massively reduce the number of idiots and bad actors with access to firearms if you banned private sales of firearms, put all sales though licensed firearm dealers and things will improve.

Though the suggestion of making firearms more expensive does have me wondering how many shooters and mass murderers are upper class.

Oh my end, I have to wonder if the lack of firearms would result in more amateur bombs or car attacks.

Spree killings are made easier by firearms.

The urge is still there for them.

Bombs are generally more difficult to make while cars tend to be easier for people to dodge than bullets (also it takes longer to get a car up to speed than it does to aim a gun).

No, it will absolutely make them harder and that's worthwhile in of itself.

But the desire for terrorist Whitman attacks is still there.

I'd personally love to know what was driving these people and see how we can address that.

I would highly suggest checking out Massachusetts Gun Laws as a possible model. It's not perfect, but could easily be a model for what National Gun Legislation could look like.

I imagine some of it is a desire to die, but avoid all the "coward's way out" stuff associated with suicide. And then over-compensating immensely

Wanna know how common and normal school shootings are? A student at the Santa Fe high school knew her school was going to get shot eventually because school shootings in the area are so common now.

The fact that students are expecting their schools to be shot up at any moment is....well, see M64's sig.

Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.
