Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A Spending Bill for Farmers (that would also start 'Welfare Reform') has been voted down, as Moderate Republicans and Teapublicans vote against it over lack of Immigration, particularly Dreamer, Legislation
. The final vote was 198-213.
It appears that the Summer-Fall Season is going to be dominated by Immigration in Congress. While this might give Republicans something to run on other then Hillary Clinton, considering most people want to protect Dreamers, this is also a positive thing for Democrats (and moderate Republicans).

I really don't think there is any other western nation where the right-wing party is so hostile to science and appoints people who know nothing about the subject to an important committee like that. It's absolutely ridiculous, but climate denial also isn't as big of a movement anywhere else.
Life is unfair...Weber didn't even get a quarter of the other two. Is he a Democrat?
To me, it's always struck me that, even if you don't believe in climate change yourself, there's no real reason not to take steps anyway. Even if you don't think you're stemming the Apocalypse, you're still helping the environment either way.

@sgamer82: Obviously the reason is "but what about those poor CE Os who will make less money to pay me because of those stupid regulations". They can't say that out loud, so they go professing skepticism about climate change to justify voting down those measures.
Life is unfair...Helping the environment, in-itself, has taken on a negative, "liberal" undertone for many people. The environment is to be used for the greatest (short-term) benefit of human beings, not cared for all the other living things on the planet, or considered for long-term consequences for our descendants. It is weird, but it's what that's come down to.

ironically, I was quoting a Republican (although of a rare breed, now-a-days) as well, Gifford Pinchot, the first chief of the Forest Service and member of Theodore Roosevelt's "Tennis Cabinet".
He was one of the early champions of sustainable forestry in America, instead of the short sighted "cut and run" model of the Timber Barons of the time, and helped introduce the idea of "conservation" to the larger American Public.

CNN been keeping track of every school shooting for 2018
. The count? 22.

Yes, clearly the best way to help with school shootings is to create a funnel of children! That makes the shooter’s work SO much easier! We’ll have zero survivors in no time at all.
I’m not even being sarcastic at this point. I genuinely believe that these Republicans want to help the shooters these days.
I mean, there's a silver lining to everything right? What if most of the victims were . . . let's not discuss that in here polite society.

Here's what I'm hearing at the moment:
EDIT: Guy with gun, Trump hat, and American flag comes out to Santa Fe High School to make America Great Again by offering his thoughts and prayers.
