The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So apparently Alex Jones is so nutso his brand of nutso is infecting other cranks - he dragged Milo Yackadapalapalous into entering a Google Fiber store, and then rambling on at length about an "A.I. Tentacle".

They were then politely escorted out by security.

Before I thought Milo was just a prick who liked making people angry.

Apparently Alex Jones' war with Ultron is escalating.

It's also not out of the question that coercion has played some part in Trump's behavior, given the strong suspicions that Russia holds compromising material over him and/or his family. A part of me wonders if it's even possible to blackmail Trump, given his ego.

If Alex Jones really wants us to think that his on-air personality is kayfabe, then why does he behave that way off the air as well?

It's long been speculated Trump killed two of his partners (or more precisely had them killed) with his mafia ties.

So, who knows.

@Cream: The general population isn't out to get you. Right now, I'd say the major problems like lack of access to good education or poverty are due to economic issues and it's unfair laws that result in the current makeup of prisoners, not "white people" (there are minority cops you know).

[up] I'd like to point out that we have a thread to discuss racism, and systemic bias would fall under the scope of that thread. Succinctly, what your statement is missing is that systemic bias: the overall tendency of cultural systems to exclude women and minorities. Looked at from the perspective of any individual, you can point out various factors that may or may not be the result of bias. Looked at in aggregate, you can see the patterns of heavy and sustained inequality: everything from the baseline distribution of wealth to funding for education to representation in executive and political positions to the fact that news media disproportionately report crimes committed by minorities.

Wait, is someone here seriously trying to tell a black person in the USA that racism isn't a major source of their problems?

[up] I didn't say that, obviously the economic issues most black people face right now are due to racism, same for the unfair laws. I was just saying most white people aren't out to get them, nor are cops, the change that needs to happen is at governmental level. Maybe I phrased the last post wrong.

[up][up][up] #NotAllWhites? I'm sorry, but that's not something that helps the situation at all. If you're white, you are a beneficiary of systemic bias whether you personally harbor any racist thoughts or not.

I was just saying most white people aren't out to get them, nor are cops,

I don’t think anyone claimed that most white people are out to get them, so your segway into “#Not All White People” is kinda weird.

As for cops not being out to get them, that realy depends on the department, there are areas of the US where it’s safe to say that not only are most cops out to get them, but all of them are.

It's also a somewhat off statement since the benefit of it is negative. It's NOT being subject to systematic racism, not anything which benefits you as poor whites are exploited as well as ignored by the government.

The genuine privilege belongs to a oligarchy elite of the United States which is a much smaller groups of whites.

One which uses the racism of the United States to keep the public divided as well as against one another. Sadly, it's a very effective one as poor whites would rather side with the rich whites who would (and do) leave them to die in the streets than fellow poor blacks.

Sadly, that doesn't appear likely to change any time soon.

That depends on the kind of bias, white criminals certainly benefit from the police’s over focus on minority criminals, as they are under less scrutiny.

Also the constant de facto wealth transfer from poor minorities to middle class whites does benefit a lot of middle class whites, it inflates the value of their land, it provides them with government services funded by fines targeted at minorities.

That’s before we get into things like the job market, where the bias against minorities certainly does benefit less skilled white applicants.

And poor white Americans consistently vote for politicians who will harm them economically because they have become convinced that minorities are disproportionately (and undeservedly) benefiting from welfare and other social programs. That is racism even if the outcome is harmful to the racists, and it creates a social environment that is deeply hostile to those minorities.

And the "some cops are minorities after all" is sadly not relevant, either. Because systemic racism can still be the law of the land when minorities are part of the system. A minority cop can still be subject to the same racial biases shared by their institution.

@Fighteer: Of course my words won't help the situation, I don't even live in the US, just reminding that not everything needs to be a "us vs them" mentality, that kind of thinking is not healthy. That was the impression I got from Cream's post, just to clarify.

A minority cop will still be part of the institutional culture of his or her police department. You think when a black man gets stopped by two cops in a car, because one happens to be a fellow black man means he's safe?

And poor white Americans consistently vote for politicians who will harm them economically

This depends on how you define poor, the urban poor tend to vote for Democrats I belive, it’s the rural poor (who are generally better off than their urban counterparts) who vote Republican. Likewise the poor self employed tend to vote Republican while people in say the service industry are more likely to vote Democrat. The closer one gets to the poverty line the mroe likely one is to vote Democratic, the US just has a thing about calling middle class rural home owners poor.

The US defines class is weird ways, I listen to the 538 podcast and they always define class along education grounds, while over here (in the UK), it’s much more about ecneomic background and wealth, a working class person can be well educated and a middle class person can be uneducated.

I'd say the rural poor vote Republican mostly out of social conservative reasons with economic reasons being second.

The self-employed poor voting republican mostly out of economic reasons, probably due to soon to be rich mentality and not wanting to ruin their future selves with more taxes and regulations.
