Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There's the small matter of the fact that Native Americans are members of different nations. It's one of the things which pisses me off about the whole oil pipeline that it disrespects the fact they should be considered their own countries.
They have their own governments.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. So we're being monitored by alt-right groups? Figures. Still, I don't see any point in trying to look nice for them; they're on the list of folks who have no hope of being persuaded.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Pfff, supporting ideas and ideologies prone to losing is their favorite pas time.
Lost the Civil War, lost WWII, nearly every fascist or dictatorship failed and lost, helped putting a loser in the White House and are now losing the legislative and governorship and are even losing their protesting safe spaces because in reality they are too spineless to do anything unless they have protection from the state they want to dismantle.
Daily reminder the alt-right is filled with guys like this:

Inter arma enim silent legesThere are bot programs out there trawling the web looking for certain key words and phrases that indicate particular political profiles. When the bot finds one, the site is tagged for future spamming. TVT is probably too small to be worth it, but you never know. We have a certain reputation in one corner of the web. I wouldnt become too surprised if someone out there eventually tries to make an issue out of us.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart. We have a pretty good record of identifying and banning most malicious activity of that sort, which should discourage anyone trying to mess with the site.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"In other news, it looks as though the much-vaunted summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un may not happen, at least if Trump keeps pushing the issue of unilateral disarmament for North Korea. So where does this leave us? Are we back at square one? If the summit gets cancelled, does that mean a war is inevitable?
There is already a war. It never stopped. If you mean: will we start shooting at each other, then the answer is, "Who knows?" The North Koreans almost certainly won't shoot first, so it's up to whether Trump, Bolton, and Hannity retain enough sanity.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangWhy does North Korea keep doing this? Is it really better to be in a state of constant struggle due to international sanctions and with the USA, South Korea against them? They gave the excuse that Bolton would be to blame, but the truth is they just aren't willing to give up their nukes yet.

Life is unfair...This is a tad off-topic, but North Korea maintains the absolute power of its government by keeping its populace in a constant state of existential terror. To do this, it requires an external enemy, and that is the United States. We are always about to storm their noble country and murder everyone, so the starvation and the brainwashing and the absolute military control of everything are necessary measures to keep everyone safe.
They have a long-term plan which involves achieving nuclear delivery capability to the U.S., at which point they will present themselves as peers to negotiate a more favorable resolution to this eternal war. Basically, once they can nuke us, we have to negotiate as equals.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Another thing to keep in mind is that our withdrawal from the Iran deal clearly shows that we aren't negotiating in good faith and nothing we say can be trusted, thus it's perfectly rational from the NK's perspective to move away from an agreement.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangNorth Korea is a pseudo-fascist state. Fascist states want unity brought about by externalizing hatred. This hatred is their claim to authority. This means that enemies are extremely valuable to the fascist, more so than friends. If peace ever broke out, it would greatly threaten North Korea's stability.
Leviticus 19:34So yeah. About the "Trump Peace Prize" thing... my major consolation is that the Swedish Academy, the ones who award the Nobel Prizes, is currently mired in a sex abuse scandal. There's no way they'd award the Peace Prize to the pussy-grabber under these conditions.

Eh, I don't think it's necessarily wrong to call North Korea psuedo-fascist. As a rule Stalinism doesn't support defacto hereditary government and considering that they dropped references to Communism in favor of Juche
I think just calling them a fascist state wouldn't be out of order.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangAt a certain point, hereditary dictatorships are hereditary dictatorships regardless of what ideology they dress up the apparatus of state in.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

Even with 100% proportional representation, odds are they still wouldn't have gotten a president yet, and there would be 8 of them across all 535 voting members of congress.
