The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I have a feeling that taking their children away is a terror tactic. And being stuck on a military base? Really?

[up][up][up]If they weren't restrained by our system they would probably be openly selling those children to slavers.

And I'm not 100% convinced all of those officials who signed away those kids to human traffickers were all "just" incompetent or overworked.

I'd like to point out that military bases are actually decent places to put people up. They'll often house people displaced by disasters. Also, from the Washington Post:

At the peak of the 2014 child-immigration crisis, the Obama administration used bases in Oklahoma, Texas and California to house more than 7,000 children over a period of several months.

They should have sent a poet.

[up]Fair point.

In that case this does not offend me, shockingly I suppose the Trump administration are not being inhumane in regards to the military base thing.

I'd like to point out that we've now reached a point where we have people (including me) wondering if our government is actually selling children to slavers and were not laughed out by the rest of the posters here.

Honestly a whole lot of people in the government would unironically love to bring back feudalism at the very least, if not outright chattel slavery.

The country has long since passed The Tyson Zone.

Trump is protected from breaking all laws by Congress and they also protect his appointees.

I don't even know WHAT the Democrats would charge them with if they had both the spine as well as votes.

[up] You say that like they lack both already and not just the votes.

"Gross negligence" would be the first thing to come to mind.

Let me tell you a morbid joke:

So I watch this channel on Youtube that does lets plays. One of the people talking makes a joke saying humanity has reached a point where all their problems are solved and everyone's basically in a utopia. God comes along and goes *click!* "Hehehe!" and resets everything. That's how I feel when we went from Obama to Trump.

I'd very much like to believe the DNC is a hippo and is just slow to react but will make its presence unequivocally known soon.

The DNC is extremely limited in what it can actually do right now, on account of the Republicans' complete dominance of Washington in the 2016 election. Frankly, it's damn-near miraculous how much they've accomplished in the last year and a half given that they've effectively been reduced to Hapless Spectator levels of influence and power.

Not surprised so much as feeling the need to emphasize this.

I do still believe a lot of this is more incompetence than malice. Hanlon's Razor.

[up][up]I really don't get why people expect the DNC to do more considering the situation. Did these people just fail math or something?

I am kinda worried about assuming the worst here, we don't want to end up with our own pizzagate, as undeniably evil as this orginization is.....

[up]I think that's absolutely a reasonable fear in that we're all human and thus can befall the cognitive glitches that result in conspiracy theories, but in this context I don't think our mistake is especially unreasonable.

The Trump administration is extremely cruel towards immigrants so given the context "send undocumented immigrant children to military bases" sounds much worse then it would normally, and it still sounds pretty bad out of context.

And pizza-gate was apparently based around actual terms and symbols for child-porn or some shite, its important to try to remain grounded, even when we are dealing with an administration that would just as soon ban all immigrants if they could.

I don't think anyone here believes their was a massive coordinated Conspiracy to cover up child sex trafficking or anything like that.
