Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

American Right wingers tend to favor strong state governments as opposed to a strong federal government, partially due to the way powers are divided and the fact that it makes it easier, in most cases, to enact their authoritarian agenda.
Other countries don't have powers divided in the same way America does, with individual components that are in many ways independent of the central government. They just have a central government with local governments that are much more restricted than American states are, which in many cases makes taking power away from the federal a more difficult task.
Re: the Democrats and the European mainstream right: The thing is that the "mainstream right" in Europe has generally made the same rush to grab the fascist vote as the US has, with some exceptions.
Angela Merkel and the CDU and (saying this reluctantly) Berlusconi and FI would almost certainly be Blue Dog Democrats in the USA, but the Conservatives in the UK, the Republicans in France, Fidesz in Hungary, PiS in Poland and the current PP leadership in Spain? They'd fit right in with the GOP except on a few issues which are locally peculiar to the US. (The death penalty is strictly off the table in Europe, for example.)
With a few exceptions, "states' rights" is strictly a shibboleth in American politics. Anyone who supported making marijuana policy a state issue would be laughed out of the current GOP.
Other countries do often have federal and state competencies, but there's generally less infighting between them and a clearer separation of powers. When there is infighting, it's usually either issue-by-issue (Scotland doesn't want to host nuclear weapons) or a regionalist independence movement.

Actually, I am minded to disagree. To my understanding PiS and perhaps also Fidesz tends towards a more left wing approach to certain economic matters such as minimum wages and the like; it's not merely political posturing. Berlusconi is more of a more clownish version of Trump than someone with a political ideology.

.
Not to mention that "committing genocide against Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians" is essentially the one thing the historical Young Turks were known for.
Naming yourself after such a group and then going "No, we actually took the name because of some other obscure meaning nobody bloody knows about" makes you either an idiot or a liar. And the aforementioned genocide denial doesn't make it any better.
We learn from history that we do not learn from history"Essentially" that's questionable - to me and to Wikipedia "Young Turks" is principally the group that succeeded the Ottomans and gave Turkey much of its present structure, the Armenian genocide is perhaps the second not the first thing they are known for.

Right Wing views are inhenrently bigoted, right?
Eh? Is not usually the opossite? Social Conservatives being naturally more bigoted than Economical ones

Watch me destroying my countryBut if the social order they're trying to uphold (or return to) is fundamentally interlinked with bigotry, which they usually (always?) are... I don't know, I haven't read enough political philosophy to tackle that subject, although I'm sure somebody has written on it.
Obviously, this does not make left-wing views immune from bigotry.
More of less thing, every story that argues against bigotry is more of less Left Wing
I guess that it's definitive, there nothing worth salvaging on the Right. At least not socially
I mean, when was the last time that a story about how Bigotry is bad had being called "Conservative"?
Add that people generally agree that Conservatives are generally less creative than Leftists and you got a really ugly and pointless thing unless you're a bigot

Watch me destroying my countryDo we have to go into the whole “conservatives are inherently worse than liberals” discussion every few days, we have a philosophy thread and a general politics thread, does this debate have to eat half of OTC every few days?

We probably will have to use them.
Albeit, I have to admit that we all agreeing in almost everything is kinda akward.
Watch me destroying my countryI think it's a matter of changing definition.
I was a conservative who morphed into a liberal because the country drifted hard right to the point of self-parody.
Then I made myself much more liberal socially because why not?

My highly respected nominee for CIA Director, Gina Haspel, has come under fire because she was too tough on Terrorists. Think of that, in these very dangerous times, we have the most qualified person, a woman, who Democrats want OUT because she is too tough on terror. Win Gina!
The Russia Witch Hunt is rapidly losing credibility. House Intelligence Committee found No Collusion, Coordination or anything else with Russia. So now the Probe says OK, what else is there? How about Obstruction for a made up, phony crime. There is no O, it’s called Fighting Back
The 13 Angry Democrats in charge of the Russian Witch Hunt are starting to find out that there is a Court System in place that actually protects people from injustice...and just wait ‘till the Courts get to see your unrevealed Conflicts of Interest!
“The Great Revolt” by Salena Zito and Brad Todd does much to tell the story of our great Election victory. The Forgotten Men & Women are forgotten no longer!
Good luck to Ric Grenell, our new Ambassador to Germany. A great and talented guy, he will represent our Country well!
Lisa Page, who may hold the record for the most Emails in the shortest period of time (to her Lover, Peter S), and attorney Baker, are out at the FBI as part of the Probers getting caught? Why is Peter S still there? What a total mess. Our Country has to get back to Business!
Is this Phony Witch Hunt going to go on even longer so it wrongfully impacts the Mid-Term Elections, which is what the Democrats always intended? Republicans better get tough and smart before it is too late!

Claiming you weren't referring to Enver, Talaat, and Cemal when you called yourself "the Young Turks" then denying the Armenian Genocide is a little like claiming you weren't making a Nazi reference when you dubbed your nationwide leftist movement "the National Socialists" and then denying the Holocaust.
