The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]x3 et al.: it's a primary, it's not going to be as straightforward as "just check the box for X party". At least that's how I see it. @Parable specifically, that's basically what I'm trying to do.

One of the benefits of a mail-in ballot. You can take as much time as you want with the names in front of you.

The Conservative party in the UK would be slightly right of center in the US. They support LGBT rights, national healthcare and renewable energy. For some of those issues, you can actually vote Conservative without being conservative.

LGBT+ rights (as a party policy) are relatively new. David Cameron was the first Conservative prime minister to push those.

[up][up] The implication that the UK Conservative party would be considered moderate at best in the US still stands. Their mainline positions are far softer than the mainline positions held by the GOP.

The whole reason behind bringing them up was to illustrate the difference between conservative and Conservative, specifically in relation to US politics.

President Obama has endorsed Senator Feinstein for her senate re-election bid.

Feinstein enjoys a very wide poll gap against all her competition, Nazi or otherwise.

Also, might be worth nothing that Californians began receiving their election information recently, and the Nazi didn't even have his name among the candidates.

I support Trump legalizing the President for Life bid w/ 4 year elections then having him die of natural causes for a few more terms of Obama.

Saying that all mainstream European right-wing parties are equal or to the left of the Democrats just seems more like conventional wisdom now, rather than something people actually provide evidence for. It's just something that's been said over and over that's it's accepted as fact.

[up][up] That was pretty much the point I was making. Big C Conservative refers to a Conservative party, and Conservative parties around the world vary in how little c conservative they are. Little c conservatism is a distinct concept.

[up] I think the mainstream European right is probably similar to our conservative Democrats. Of course, the European far right has had an unprecedented resurgence and a lot of Eastern European countries are super right wing now, so that's more of an "on the balance" statement.

[up][up] The current UK Conservative party is less right wing than the GOP. It's also the most well known Conservative party. You'll also note that I never claimed the Conservatives were "moderate by US standards".

There's a big difference between Conservative and conservative.

I think the point being made is that "less right-wing than the Republican Party" doesn't mean "equally or more left-wing than the Democratic Party".

There's a wider spectrum here than a lot of people are willing to acknowledge.

What is it about UK media that makes it more conservative on average, or at least actively protective of the Conservatives?

That'd probably cause first amendment issues and if it did go through all the bigoted fascists who wanted to run would just have to claim they're a different group of bigoted fascists than the Nazis.

At this point you can't even get a resolution saying "Nazis bad" past some state legislatures. Getting any sort of law like that passed ain't happening.

@Beary Scary: Well, there's a few issues with that. In particular, you need to define Nazism and Fascism, which is actually very difficult. Godwin's Law is a bitch.
