Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Saw this on twitter, and thought it gave some perspective.
- In 1932, in teeth of Great Depression, with discredited Herbert Hoover running against ascendant FDR, Hoover still got FORTY PERCENT of the popular vote!
There is, and always has been, such a thing as “the base.”

Trump having his own funeral whilst Mc Cain's is going on? If only we could be so lucky.
It doesn't really surprises me Mc Cain would want Obama in his funeral. Mc Cain had a fairly cordial relationship and Obama to the point of admiration, basically Mc Cain and Obama even if they had disagreements with multiple issues, never were really disrespectful towards each other.
One would be excused to think that Mc Cain saw Obama as a Worthy Opponent rather than simply opposition.
Inter arma enim silent leges
You can said that Ma Cain vs Obama was the last time republicans and Democrat would respect each other as oponents....
Now? now there is trump.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"
Considering that the last remaining bit of the the party of Teddy Roosevelt has been stamped out for some time now, what should we call the Former Republican Party instead?
I was thinking something like "the Party of Trump" or something to do with Russia (maybe even mentioning commies,) for the irony.
A bit too on the nose. Even if that's basically what they are. Honestly, if the Republican party as it exists today had been around back then, we might still have been part of the jolly old British Empire if only because a substantial part of the country would have liked being part of a fucking dictatorship.
Corker-Blackburn drama risks must-win Senate seat for GOP
A Politico article about the apparent strife going on with retiring Republican Senator Bob Corker, and presumptive Republican nominee Marsha Blackburn. Apparently Corker has said some nice things about the Democrat Phil Bredesen while more or less snubbing Blackburn, a faithful Trump-supporter.
Apparently Bredesen has been ahead in a few polls (though it's still early, so who knows what that means) and Republicans at this point just want Corker to stay out of things.
Perhaps it's an inevitable result of said pandering. The old guard who were "just" power-hungry assholes are being replaced by a new generation who have thoroughly quaffed the Flavor-aid. The charlatans are gradually being replaced by people who actually believe in the con.
There's a reason Paul Krugman mentioned in an op-ed that racism really is the only thing the GOP has going for it these days.
Edit:
On a side note, I regret comparing Trump to a durian. Mainly because I just ate a durian for the first time in my life and OMG it was so delicious.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI recently read a newspaper op-ed column, in which the author coined the term "Trumpism," because Fascism doesn't quite fit, not exactly. For one thing, while Trump may be racist, he isn't Anti-Semitic — and Anti-Semitism was a key component of the Nazi brand of Fascism.

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.

I would not put it past Trump to take that literally.
