The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I trust Rudy knows more about coverups and how to dodge the law than Trump.

He also admitted that Jared Kush was "disposable".

Considering just much shady crap he's been involved in (cursed 666 5th Avenue Manhattan property anyone?) he should probably start exploring his options regarding cooperation with the Special Counsel.

[up][up] I know, right? Giuliani has to be playing some kind of a long game here, or else he's just so hopelessly out-of-touch that he doesn't even know what a crime is. Which for certain members of Trump's inner circle I wholly believe, but not Giuliani.

... really hope that Kushner going down takes Ivanka down. She's the one I'm most worried about.

Yeah, Ivanka worries me too. She's as awful as her father in so many ways, but people are even more eager to project positive traits on her. Plus her clothing brand is derivative, overpriced, and made with overseas sweatshop labor.

I think Rudy may simply be going for the fact that the cover up will be worse than the crime. Clinton, after all, paid off all of his mistresses and that was never impeachable.

I think the only one he didn't was Elizabeth Gracen (of Highlander, Ms. America fame)

Watch the bodyguard. When he flips, the dominoes really will start tumbling down.

In other news, Trump Handed the Agenda to Conservatives and They Blew It.

I found this part amusing: "As the first and probably only stretch of complete Republican control of government nears its end, a grim melancholy has crept over many regular Republicans, who are wondering why they have so little to show for it. They have temporarily let up on enforcing regulations on pollution, labor law, and campaign finance, as every Republican administration does. And they have given wealthy people a large tax cut, as every Republican administration also does. But these measures are easily reversed and will not leave much of an imprint on the role of government in American life. Is this all there is?"

A little light to illuminate an otherwise grim political scene.

I feel like there's a sharp divide between people who've never served but consider themselves "military people", people currently serving in the military, and veterans.
There's a sharp divide between the first group and the other two, depending on what you mean by "military people."
Service jobs lean conservative, because they appeal to traditional conservative values.
This, though I'd argue that toxic masculinity plays a part too; serving in infantry or tanks is clearly a Man's Job™ and so it attracts the kind of conservative who thinks he needs one but can't get hired in construction/factory worknote ; the Navy and AF have mostly technical jobs that require more non-linear thinkingnote and so appeal to a broader swath of the country.
And then there was the shitshow when an enlisted soldier held an umbrella for Obama...I don't know how many actual soldiers cared, but the usual suspects of course raised a fuss.
He's the fucking President, sure I'd hold an umbrella for him. I'd have done it for Bush, too. It beats sweeping water off the flight deck while it's raining.

Hey! Field Artillery is a thinking man's job, at least for the officers. Direct your accusations of no brainpower required at the Infantry and MPs, like the rest of us do.

The Republican Party has existed solely as a platform to campaign for the rich who will reward you with jobs as well as technically legal kickbacks for awhile now. The fact they have no agenda beyond this shouldn't be a surprise.

The Inner Party wants power for its own sake.

Another one of Trump's lawyers has quit, at least retired. Ty Cobb will be replaced by one of Clinton's impeachment lawyers.

How exactly does a legal case proceed if none of the defense's legal team are even allowed to look at the evidence because they lack the proper security clearance? I suppose we can always just have Trump declare them unclassified, because why not? He's done it before! Problem solved!

It's a pity he doesn't just fill his cabinet with the loudest weirdest people in Hollywood. They'd do better than him.

Cobb was hired last August, and apparently was trying to push Trump towards cooperation (at least back than), the new guy is expected to take a more combative approach.

Trump should ask for them to put cameras in.

Mind you, hilariously, the actual offices of Trump's business were trashy looking (more like the Boiler Room and I don't mean the movie) so they the network built the big Don Corleone classic looking set for Trump to work out of.

Someone wrestled the phone away from Trump this morning.

Mr. Cohen, an attorney, received a monthly retainer, not from the campaign and having nothing to do with the campaign, from which he entered into, through reimbursement, a private contract between two parties, known as a non-disclosure agreement, or NDA. These agreements are........very common among celebrities and people of wealth. In this case it is in full force and effect and will be used in Arbitration for damages against Ms. Clifford (Daniels). The agreement was used to stop the false and extortionist accusations made by her about an affair,.........despite already having signed a detailed letter admitting that there was no affair. Prior to its violation by Ms. Clifford and her attorney, this was a private agreement. Money from the campaign, or campaign contributions, played no roll in this transaction.

He's going to be furious when he finally gets it back.
