Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Stein can’t be discredited because she’s never been credible. The people who believe her won’t belive it if she’s indicted over Russia, they’ve been blind to facts for years, they’re not going to start listening now.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranBREAKING NEWS: Temporary Director of ICE, Thomas Homan, is retiring effective immediately
.
I would say this is good news, but then I remember Trump is in charge, and he's just going to nominate someone worse then this guy. I don't know who the new Acting Director will be, though. They could be better; they could be worse. At least this guy is gone.
Kelly thinks he's saving U.S. from disaster, calls Trump 'idiot,' say White House staffers
The officials said Kelly portrays himself to Trump administration aides as the lone bulwark against catastrophe, curbing the erratic urges of a president who has a questionable grasp on policy issues and the functions of government. He has referred to Trump as "an idiot" multiple times to underscore his point, according to four officials who say they've witnessed the comments.
That said, he's denying it rather firmly, so Trump might just dismiss this as "Fake News". And for all we know, this isn't true or it is a half-truth.
Kelly has endured worse.
And frankly, as awful as Kelly is, I'd rather him have be there with some basic moderation/knowledge of governance than Trump firing him and using Fox & Friends as his Co S.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Allegations of disloyalty, true or false, are usually when the competent servant gets the axe when the emperor is a paranoid megalomaniac. The notion being mentioned that the vastly more qualified — if equally morally bankrupt — Kelly thought Trump was a moron would probably be enough to make Trump think having him around is bad.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."It was a page or two back, but I am actually curious about that now, what were Orwell's actual politics?

1984 was also written against the backdrop of Stalin's terror policies - it wasn't necessarily (as it's often taken) solely an indictment of fascism. Although there is definitely an anti-fascist streak to it as well, and unlike Animal Farm it's not wholly allegorical, there is a fair amount of Stalinist terror woven into the DNA of 1984.
Orwell wandered through the left-wing spectrum most of his life.

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies. This is from a few pages back, but it caught my eye:
"Even shit like My Little Pony has messages like, "The Native Americans were equally responsible for the unpleasantries of colonial America and if they had just embraced the superiority of the white settlers' culture, everything would have been fine."
Which episode was this? I honestly don't remember this message.
Thoughts? I've always been anti-abortion, so I want to hear what you guys think.

'Twas a pretty good episode on the value of negotiation and compromise. Unfortunately, it was set to a Wild West theme, which resulted in some Unfortunate Implications.

The alt-right uses the internet and social media as a recruitment ground and to spread its ideals. Russian trolls used everywhere from Reddit to Facebook to Tumblr to spread misinformation and distrust. They are good at this, and they won't stop or go away, because it's working.
We need more people like Hdbomberguy and Counterpoint to counter them. We don't have to give them a platform, but we can't let their beliefs go unchallenged, because they are actively and aggressively recruiting people, especially young people.
