Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Whenever you bring up Trump's faults, they immediately go to, "But her Emails", or Benghazi, or whatever Hillary was involved in, like that automatically refutes any critisism of Trump.
There was a post in this thread a while back (or maybe somewhere else) re: authoritarian leanings and anti-intellectualism that summed things up pretty well. In short, the belief is that, if you can discredit "the authority", their ideas are discredited as well (the main example cited being climate change and Al Gore).

The thing is Al Gore isn't even a trained scientist. But I figure "Al Gore owns a big house, therefore he's a hypocrite" is a lot easier than addressing the scientific and visible evidence backing up climate change that go far beyond Al Gore.
Creationism is another example. Showing the overwhelming scientific evidence of evolution to a creationist won't get you anywhere, because they already made up their mind evolution isn't true.
Global warming and climate change aren't the same thing. Or rather, Global warming is a specific kind of climate change if I'm getting this right.
Although, that's reasoning never makes much sense if you actually think about it: "Oh, it still cold sometimes, so of course things can't be getting warmer on average."

The comedy of White Southerners, at least in the 1990s, was all about making fun of themselves being idiots. I mean, using Engvall as an example, his main recurring gag is about people asking stupid questions with obvious answers, and he himself asks a stupid question with an obvious answer and makes fun of himself for that. This whole thing about conservatives not being able to take jokes about themselves is new, and mostly tied to how political they are and how much they support Donald Trump.

Wizard Needs Food BadlyIf you are a self-admitted redneck like Jeff Foxworthy always states at the beginning of his stand-up routines, yeah.
Wizard Needs Food BadlyWe see the same thing when creationists bring up Darwin, his mistakes, and that silly story where he recanted evolution on his deathbed. Darwin isn't our prophet and we've moved 150 years beyond him. Even if he was wrong on certain things, that doesn't mean our current science is wrong.
Former George W. Bush ethics lawyer ditches GOP, to seek U.S. Senate in Minn. as Democrat [1]
Painter, a persistent and frequent critic of President Donald Trump on national cable TV news appearances and on Twitter, is expected to announce his candidacy at a Monday news conference.
He's running for Democrat Al Franken's former seat. Franken resigned Jan. 2 in the wake of numerous sexual harassment allegations.
Gov. Mark Dayton appointed Lt. Gov. Tina Smith to be his successor. That seat is up this fall in a special election, and Smith has said she intends to run for a full six-year term.
Minnesota's other Senate seat, held by Democrat Amy Klobuchar, is also up this fall, although she is widely expected to win another term.
Painter, 56, a University of Minnesota professor of corporate law who is seeking elected office for the first time, lives in Mendota Heights with his wife, Karen, an associate professor of music history at the U. They moved to Minnesota in 2007 and have children.
He announced last month that he was forming an exploratory committee. At that time, he said he was unsure whether he would run as a Republican, Democrat or independent.
"I need to think about whether there's a place for me" in the GOP, he said at the time. "I'm going to be considering any and all options." He described himself as "a centrist in many ways — right up the middle." He said he has supported Democrats.
Karin Housley, a small-business owner and suburban state senator, is the only Republican to announce plans to run for the seat. She was elected to the Legislature in 2012.
Painter has said that if he runs, he would not accept donations from political action committees, super PA Cs or what he called "dark money" groups.
Painter was born in Philadelphia in 1961. He graduated from Harvard and then Yale Law School. He was Bush's ethics lawyer from 2005 to 2007.
He is vice chairman of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. That group sued Trump, alleging that he violated the U.S. Constitution's emoluments clause by refusing to sell his assets or put them in a blind trust. The case was dismissed in December.
I like Painter. A bit to the right of me politically, but I'm still able to respect him, and find agreement on the big issues, which we need more of in congress. He's also a strong anti-corruption pick, which we desperately need.
And just for the sake of completeness, here's his personal
and
campaign
twitter accounts.

Once, when I was younger, I argued with a young-earth creationist at my school who challenged me to provide him with an example of a species "becoming" another species. He told me that using illustrations didn't count, since they were only from scientists' "imaginations".
So I provided him with blown-up photographs of actual fossils of transitional species - not only the famous ones, either, ones like Lariosaurus
◊ and Gerobatrachus
◊.
He just told me that all of the animals I showed him were "fully formed" and aren't evidence of evolution. I still don't really know what he meant by that. He quickly diverted to emotional appeals and evangelism when I pressed him, and I now realize that he was never going to change his mind.

People like that usually can't be reached with evidence. They are prone to Moving the Goalposts as much as necessary to maintain their world view. As someone else a while back posted on this thread, you've got to confront them on why they need to believe something is true.
That's why facts don't usually work on people like anti-vaxxers, Creationists, climate change deniers, etc. Anti-Vaxxers need to believe something other than their own genetics are why their kid has autism. Creationists need to believe that God created everything. Climate change deniers need to believe climate change isn't happening and/or that it's not our fault and/or that it won't be that bad.
One of the biggest problems with this administration is that it's eager to pander to these people.

Disgusted, but not surprisedWeekend Tweet update. Not sure the last time I did this, so I'll start from Friday:

After a furious year of missile launches and Nuclear testing, a historic meeting between North and South Korea is now taking place. Good things are happening, but only time will tell!
KOREAN WAR TO END! The United States, and all of its GREAT people, should be very proud of what is now taking place in Korea!
So great to have Staff Sgt. Dan Nevins and the incredible WOUNDED WARRIORS with me in the White House yesterday. These are truly brave and special people! @foxandfriends
Please do not forget the great help that my good friend, President Xi of China, has given to the United States, particularly at the Border of North Korea. Without him it would have been a much longer, tougher, process!
Kanye West has performed a great service to the Black Community - Big things are happening and eyes are being opened for the first time in Decades - Legacy Stuff! Thank you also to Chance and Dr. Darrell Scott, they really get it (lowest Black & Hispanic unemployment in history).
Just Out: House Intelligence Committee Report released. “No evidence” that the Trump Campaign “colluded, coordinated or conspired with Russia.” Clinton Campaign paid for Opposition Research obtained from Russia- Wow! A total Witch Hunt! MUST END NOW!
House Intelligence Committee rules that there was NO COLLUSION between the Trump Campaign and Russia. As I have been saying all along, it is all a big Hoax by the Democrats based on payments and lies. There should never have been a Special Counsel appointed. Witch Hunt!

“Clapper lied about (fraudulent) Dossier leaks to CNN” @foxandfriends Fox News He is a lying machine who now works for Fake News CNN.
Just had a long and very good talk with President Moon of South Korea. Things are going very well, time and location of meeting with North Korea is being set. Also spoke to Prime Minister Abe of Japan to inform him of the ongoing negotiations.
Look forward to being in the Great State of Michigan tonight. Major business expansion and jobs pouring into your State. Auto companies expanding at record pace. Big crowd tonight, will be live on T.V.
Secret Service has just informed me that Senator Jon Tester’s statements on Admiral Jackson are not true. There were no such findings. A horrible thing that we in D.C. must live with, just like phony Russian Collusion. Tester should lose race in Montana. Very dishonest and sick!

While Washington, Michigan, was a big success, Washington, D.C., just didn’t work. Everyone is talking about the fact that the White House Correspondents Dinner was a very big, boring bust...the so-called comedian really “bombed.” @greggutfeld should host next year! @Pete Hegseth
Just got recent Poll - much higher than President O at same time....Well, much more has been accomplished!
“Trump’s Triumphs are driving his critics Crazy!” Thank you Steve Hilton @Next Rev FNC, just want to do what is right for our wonderful U.S.A.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner was a failure last year, but this year was an embarrassment to everyone associated with it. The filthy “comedian” totally bombed (couldn’t even deliver her lines-much like the Seth Meyers weak performance). Put Dinner to rest, or start over!

Five Thirty Eight has a handy graph
detailing Trump's approval ratings compared to other presidents at the same point in their tenures. He's still lagging behind Obama on average, though I'm sure he's managed to dig up some outlier poll where he came out slightly better. Trump's a master of cherry-picking polls.
