The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well maybe once the Dems win next time they can just launch a state of emergency and lock up all the Republicans. Maybe start a few false flags to justify seizing power . You like that idea ? /s

KOREAN WAR TO END! The United States, and all of its GREAT people, should be very proud of what is now taking place in Korea!

After a furious year of missile launches and Nuclear testing, a historic meeting between North and South Korea is now taking place. Good things are happening, but only time will tell!

So great to have Staff Sgt. Dan Nevins and the incredible WOUNDED WARRIORS with me in the White House yesterday. These are truly brave and special people! @foxandfriends

[up][up][up][up][up]This entire line of thinking is immensely dumb. You start breaking political norms and there's no going back — once we're out of power after having done that, there would be no mercy for us. We're trying to protect and revitalize American democracy, not tear it apart.

I guess that Sgt. Dan Ace' Pokemon is named WOUNDED WARRIORS.

I guess that is a Wishiwashi.

[down] The joke is that the way that the name is written sounds like the In Game NPC Pokemon Nicknames are written

Historically, people turn to someone to fix all their problems and ignore the restrictions on their power then are SHOCKED when they turn out to:

  • Be unable to fix all their problems
  • Turn into a tyrant

Very often it's because they believe their own hype and thus create enemies to explain why their worldview isn't working.

So how much does the National Debt actually matter?

We're talking about fiscal policy and the National Debt in my American Government class, and no one can give me a straight answer.

Well, the United States is in vast heavy debt to China and other nations like that.

These nations, for the most part, don't expect us to ever repay them but they use that debt to leverage interactions.

And we also continue to overspend so we need to buy more.

The whole Cycle of Corruption and Debt.

The vast majority of American debt is owed to domestic individuals/groups, not foreign entities. As long as the interest can be paid, its not an immediate issue, though something (hint: it involves raising taxes) should be don in the medium-long term.

Debt is completely irrelevant, the US owes almost all of it's debt to itself.

China has absolutely no leverage over us. All we have to do is tell them we won't pay it and their entire economy will die overnight.

Oh really when?

National Debt is basically the remaining value of all bonds issued by the government, guaranteeing repayment over a (I believe) fixed term in exchange for the cash to buy the bonds now—so they're a reliable investment tool if you have faith in the issuing government's ability to keep its repayments (this is what a country's credit rating is about, and why downgrades are REALLY bad for governments).

The deficit is just how much more the government needs to issue to fund its expenditure.

As noted, the actual value of the debt is completely irrelevant as long as the repayments aren't overwhelming, economic stimulus and growth and increased tax returns are just as effective as deficit reduction. Well, stimulus if the economy needs assistance. Otherwise you cause different problems.

You'll notice that they always tie debt reduction to decreased social spending. For some reason they're totally fine with increased military spending regardless of the debt.

@Ramidel: You seem to be conflating loud behaviour with the far-left. I agree with Ambar, but in a different way: Sanders' supporters are not far-left because the policies they want are not socialism in any way, they are in line with nordic european capitalism.

[up]Debt is completely irrelevant, the US owes almost all of it's debt to itself. China has absolutely no leverage over us.

As of September 2014, foreigners owned $6.06 trillion of U.S. debt, or approximately 47% of the debt held by the public of $12.8 trillion and 34% of the total debt of $17.8 trillion. The largest holders were China, Japan, Belgium, the Caribbean banking centers, and oil exporters.

I confess, Belgium is the surprise there.

[up]All we have to do is tell them we won't pay it and their entire economy will die overnight.

Wouldn't the exact same thing happen to us?

[up][up]In the US political landscape those views are still functionally equivalent to Socialism (or even communism if they are especially dense/ reactionary) in the minds of many people, and thus are Far-Left regardless of if it’s actual Socialism or not.

[up]It would be pretty disastrous for the entire global economy if the US decided not to pay the interest on its debt, though it is practically impossible for that to happen barring some really stupid political maneuvers *stares in Ted Cruz’s direction*.

The owners of the debt can't leverage it for shit. They can stop buying more, but what are they going to do with the bonds held? Stop accepting repayment and wipe the debt clean?
