Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yes.
There are also studies that show that anti-drug PSAs actually increased substance abuse among kids, but Trump wants to bring those back too.
This is because Republicans are anti-intellectual. They're the party of "feels right". They support abstinence because "If you teach kids not to have sex, they won't get pregnant," is a line of thinking that feels right to their common sense wisdom. So far as they're concerned, no snooty elitist liberal with their charts and their graphs is ever going to undermine the simple wisdom of the common man.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub."Truthiness", as Stephen Colbert would say.
No beer?! But if there's no beer, then there's no beef or beans!"Truthiness" was coined by Colbert years ago in his very first show to describe the process by which Republicans arrive at tribal knowledge.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Of course, as Colbert pointed out last summer, we've moved beyond Truthiness to Trumpiness
As The Other Wiki explains

Not too long ago, my dad said that he identified something called the "Trump lie". Whereas a regular lie involves making a statement that you know to be false, a "Trump lie" involves making a statement when you have no idea whether or not it's true. Perfect example would be his claim that he had the biggest inauguration audience of all time.

No beer?! But if there's no beer, then there's no beef or beans!Trump makes statements that feel true to him at the time. Whatever he says is true, to him, but may or may not have anything to do with his beliefs previously or later. It's the ultimate reflection of his narcissism.

I think the best example was him claiming, to Canadian PM Justin Trudeau's face, that the US has a trade deficit with Canada.
... he actually bragged about not knowing because he thought it was such a brilliant move.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. That falls under the category of making shit up because he thinks it'll help him look good or strike a deal. It's a slightly different category of Trumpiness.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Okay. Non sequitur noted.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.I'm going to be honest, FyodorDose, between that out of nowhere comment and the response to whatever got you thumped earlier, I think you're rapidly losing any ability to be taken seriously you might have previously had, if you haven't already.

If so, I retract my statement

It's a very recognizable habit, and one that's frustrating to see in the POTUS. I have a close friend who does this.
Not to go all armchair psychiatrist but I should disclose that the friend I'm talking about has something of a cocktail of medically-diagnosed conditions.
One of her behaviors that I've observed is a tendency to invent details or even entire first-hand accounts of things that never happened in order to win a conversation that she's engaged in. The more heated an argument gets, the more facts her brain invents out of nowhere to prove that she's right.
It's very difficult to manage. If you try to confront my friend about the falsehood of her claims, that just provokes her to dig in her heels and argue harder if not shut down the discussion entirely. If she's not emotional about it, she can be gently corrected, but once she gets angry, there's no reasoning with her.
When she's upset, if she says that she's read proven studies that show that 90% of all car crash victims are women and therefore airbags are a misogynist conspiracy, all you can really do is go along with it and wait for her to forget that she thinks that.
From what we know, Trump's people are basically in the same boat.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Going back to topic, and a preview of today's What The Fuck Just Happened Today:
Scott Pruitt will face two congressional hearings this week. The hearings will focus on the EPA's budget, but they will also give lawmakers an opportunity to grill Pruitt about other concerns and allegations about the agency's use of taxpayer money under Pruitt's leadership.

Exactly. Trump isn't the disease, he's a particularly nasty symptom of a much greater (and likely incurable) problem.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
