Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump's twitter so far:
Nancy Pelosi is going absolutely crazy about the big Tax Cuts given to the American People by the Republicans...got not one Democrat Vote! Here’s a choice. They want to end them and raise your taxes substantially. Republicans are working on making them permanent and more cuts! note
Looks like OPEC is at it again. With record amounts of Oil all over the place, including the fully loaded ships at sea, Oil prices are artificially Very High! No good and will not be accepted!

Define "might stay home," though. Is it closer to "they'll probably vote, but there's a fleeting chance they'll skip election day," "it's a tossup and dependent on how the next few months turn out," or "there's a good chance they won't vote, but there's a possibility they'll hold their nose and vote GOP anyway."
GOP voters are really regimented, and it's difficult to crack their turnout. How many will are really that disillusioned?
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."
There's reason to believe that there's a enthusiasm gap between Republicans and Democrats
so clearly being regimented isn't enough to stop people from not voting.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangWith Trump working so hard to figure out ways to deport legal immigrants, maybe he's trying to find a way to have Melania deported?

. Also, I really hope the Democrats invoke the GOP stonewalling of Garland should Kennedy's rumored retirement happen, as they can say "Well the American People want a say in the nomination process" - though still at least meet with the nominee prior to that, just to underscore that they can be reasonable in comparison.

Narcissists are so It's All About Me that in their minds, the punishment they get for anything is a crime, while whatever they did was absolutely justified. It's not possible for them to commit a crime, they can only be a victim.

But it actually explains a lot, like Micheal Cohen was more of a "Fixer" rather than an actual lawyer. Etc.

I read the tweet yes.
My point stands, Trump obviously sees this as a personal attack instead of a legitimate investigation into a wrong doing but that... isn't really new or surprising.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThe moderates are jumping ship because they do see the writing on the wall. That writing says that Trump has defined the course of the Republican party for the foreseeable future and can't be outlasted. That the Republican party will never be the party that they believed in again. That their options are either embrace the will of Trump or leave, and so they choose the latter.
Trump's the new Reagan. Even if we take him down, his brand of Republicans will just decry it as a partisan action, deny any wrongdoing, and continue down this course. For better or worse, this is what the Republican party is now. And when you get right down to it, it's what the Republican party's been for a while; it's just out in the open, where moderates can't deny its presence anymore.

Day 456: Unprecedented treachery.
1/ The Democratic National Committee filed a lawsuit against the Russian government, the Trump campaign and Wiki Leaks alleging a conspiracy to help Trump win the 2016 election. The lawsuit claims that between Russian hacking and the Trump campaign's contacts with Russia and the public cheerleading of the hacks amounted to conspiracy to interfere in the election and cause damage to the Democratic Party. DNC Chairman Tom Perez said in a statement: "This constituted an act of unprecedented treachery: the campaign of a nominee for President of the United States in league with a hostile foreign power to bolster its own chance to win the presidency." 2/ The Justice Department sent partially redacted copies of James Comey's memos – 15 pages in total – to Congress, which leaked to the public within hours. The memos cover the first three months of the Trump administration. Following the release, Trump tweeted that the memos "show clearly that there was NO COLLUSION and NO OBSTRUCTION." 3/ Trump was annoyed with Michael Flynn for making Putin wait six days for a return congratulatory phone call. Trump complained that Flynn "has serious judgment issues" as a result. Days before Michael Flynn was fired, then-White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus asked Comey if Flynn's communications were being monitored under a FISA surveillance warrant. 4/ Trump tweets that Michael Flynn's life is now "totally destroyed" while "Shadey James Comey can Leak and Lie and make lots of money from a third rate book." Flynn pleaded guilty in December to lying to federal agents and is cooperating with Robert Mueller's probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election and whether the Trump campaign was involved. 5/ Putin once told Trump that Russia has "some of the most beautiful hookers in the world," according to Comey. In a memo dated Feb. 8, 2017, Comey writes that Trump "brought up the 'Golden Showers thing,'" saying that "'the hookers thing' is nonsense." (The Hill)

6/ Comey explained why he thinks "it's possible" that Russia has compromising information on Trump. First, he says, is that "the President is constantly bringing it up with me to deny it." And, second, Trump "wouldn't criticize Vladimir Putin even in private, which struck me as odd." (CNN)

7/ Trump pressed Jeff Sessions and FBI Director Christopher Wray to find derogatory information on two senior FBI officials. Trump wanted to know why Peter Strzok and Lisa Page were still in their jobs, following allegations by his allies that they had been disloyal and had unfairly targeted him and his administration. Trump wanted information about Strzok and Page turned over to congressional Republicans in order to discredit them. (Vox)

BACKGROUND:
Strzok helped oversee the probe of Hillary Clinton's email use and the investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia during the 2016 presidential election.
Page provided legal and strategic advice about both investigations to both Comey and Mc Cabe.
The two repeatedly disparaged Trump in their private text messages to each other.
8/ Trump's legal team is still negotiating a possible interview with Robert Mueller, according to White House lawyer Ty Cobb. "The Cohen searches have not yet changed our strategy or level of cooperation with the special counsel," Cobb said, referring to recent raids on the home and workplace of Michael Cohen. At the time, it was reported that Trump was "less inclined" to sit for an interview with Mueller. (Daily Beast)

9/ Trump complained to advisers that Neil Gorsuch has been too liberal in recent cases. Trump was "incensed" that Gorsuch voted against the administration on an immigration case, renewing Trump's doubts that Gorsuch would be a reliable conservative. (Washington Post / The Hill)

10/ In May 1984, Trump – pretending to be a Trump Organization executive – lied about his wealth to a Forbes reporter so he could make the Forbes 400 list. Trump, posing as "John Barron," called the Jonathan Greenberg and claimed he was worth $100 million. At the time, Trump was worth less than $5 million. (Washington Post)
