The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So yeah, we don't know what is planning, but it's not going to be good for us or him.

There is no doubt Trump is desperate to change the news cycle.

It’s 50-50 whether he knows firing Rosenstein would actually deepen the hole rather than distract from it.

You can practically feel Trump’s panic in the air though. It’s like a crackling static electricity.

Again, they can’t convict unless congress agrees to impeach. That’s not gonna happen until mueller threatens to release dirt on them too, so it’s going to be a while.

Trump needs to be impeached because he's a lying criminal scumbag who conspired to rig the election with a hostile foreign power and he's a danger to everyone in his incompetence, stupidity, ego, and narcissism. It has nothing to do with wanting to feel good, he's just an awful, awful person who deserves to be put away for life and shouldn't have the seat of President for even one more day.

I think this can stay, as a mission statement.

This would be the best case scenario here.

Just throwing this down...

I wouldn't be surprised if Trump aides managed to talk him out of firing Rosenstein today by instead planning a press conference specifically to publicly bash him.

We'll see.

Of course, impeachment will never happen as long as the GOP has the numbers to block it. They sure aren't going to support it. Especially not after they began appealing to Trumpsters by campaigning for the midterms on the basis that they would protect Trump from impeachment.

Today in opposite world, a conservative wants to enforce gun laws.Hint

Full article

Republican congressional candidate Steve Lonegan said Friday he plans to seek criminal charges against Sen. Bob Menendez for briefly holding a display gun at a press conference while standing next to a county sheriff.

Lonegan said Menendez (D-N.J.) violated New Jersey’s strict law on gun possession when he picked up an unloaded and tagged AR-15-style rifle from a display table during a press conference last month and held it for less than 20 seconds.

“I don’t believe this is what you need to go hunting. I don’t believe this is what you need to defend yourself,” Menendez said at the early March event outside the Essex County Public Safety Academy, while standing next to Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura. “The only thing this does is kill as many people in as short a time as possible.”

Lonegan, a conservative former mayor of Bogota who has run unsuccessfully for the House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, governor and other state and local offices, is known for provocative statements. He’s currently seeking the GOP nomination to challenge freshman Democrat Josh Gottheimer in the 5th Congressional District.

While it’s unlikely a prosecutor would decide to pursue charges against Menendez, Lonegan, a supporter of gun rights, appears to be making a point about New Jersey’s strict gun laws.

“Someone who does not have a firearms permit, someone who does not own this firearm cannot pick it up and carry it anywhere,” Lonegan said in a video he posted to You Tube. “Bob Menendez is not above the law.”

Lonegan cites a New Jersey statute which states that anyone in possession of a rifle or shotgun “without having first obtained a firearms purchaser identification card ...“ is guilty of a third-degree crime.

Michael Soliman, Menendez‘s campaign chairman, called Lonegan’s claim “absurd and pathetic.”

Lonegan said the Essex County College police have “refused to allow me to file a complaint with them.” Instead, he said, he will file a complaint with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. The public safety academy is part of the college.

Though Lonegan said there are “no exceptions whatsoever” to the possession law, gun range customers are allowed to hold and fire guns if they’re not otherwise disqualified and are under the supervision of an instructor.

But gun rights attorney Evan Nappen said that exception wouldn’t apply to Menendez for holding a firearm outside of a gun range.

Nappen said that even holding a gun for less than 20 seconds without a permit technically violates the state gun laws.

“Our laws are narrowly enforced. These things are narrowly construed. There’s no exemption under the case law for the temporary transfer,” Nappen said, adding that possession of slingshots and even a broken BB gun without a permit is against the law in New Jersey.

He acknowledged, however, that prosecutors have discretion when deciding whether to seek charges.

“Whether a prosecutor here would exercise discretion or not is another story,” Nappen said.

[up][up][up][up] You can't impeach the president because he's an awful person or because you think he is dangerous, you need proof of wrongdoing, and the only proven Russian collusion comes from members of the Trump campaign, but not Trump himself. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

[up] You can impeach the President for anything. It's a political act, not a criminal one. It's more of a popularity contest. As long as you have at least a slightly reasonable pretext, then it comes down to votes.

If you're referring to packages ordered online, that's a weird situation that I've experienced as well. Ordering from Amazon and going with "Super Saver shipping" (or whatever the Free Shipping option is) typically means that Amazon doesn't process the order for almost a week, but the package still got shipped Priority, so the travel time was still 2-3 days even though it'd been ordered a week prior.

No, I am talking about walking into the post office, getting a flat rate box, and asking them to send it from New York to South Carolina, a trip which would take the package almost a week.... I have never actualy delt with non-amazon prime shipping and for the most part consider Amazon to be much better then any thing else here.

Like I don't expect the USPS to match the "goes any where in the country usually overnight, but never late" service that we had back home, because Amercia is huge and expecting that to be matched is unreasonable.

but here is the thing....

and they fit it into a Medium Flat Rate box, meaning they paid roughly $15 in postage

We had the same service, but it was just under 800 yen, or about 7 dollars, slightly under half the cost.... again this is forgivable a bigger country means that you need to recoup more costs in expenditure..... but the catch is? Not only does ours cover the entire nation for that but it also covers international as well.... for that 800 yen, I can pack up a package in Edogawa-ku, and have it wind up in Yonkers within 2 weeks..... And that's with dealing with customs and every thing..... And I can't really buy that it costs the USPS more to ship internally, then it does for the Japanese Post to ship a package across an ocean.

I could understand being slower, or being more expensive, America is huge, and something is going to have to give in the service quality to make up for it, but the problem lies in that every part of the service has given out.

The USPS may be one of the best options for shipping a package within the US, but claiming it is a great service is without seeing the context of how other postal services opperate.

....

And honestly I could see the USPS getting there, if they had the budget, but that would take a budget and effort, something the republicians are unwilling to give.

I mean out post is a goverment owned monopoly, and if our corupt politicians who cant even fix the watet problem in thr largest city can manage, I don't see why your better ones couldn't

Also you kind of are Physical, no one is saying Amercia is awful at everything least of all me, think about it for a moment if I was.... why wouldn't I move back home? Where I could get a better job?

I would, but even under Cheeto Supreme it is better here.

Another High Ranking republican (RNC deputy finance chair) is stepping down, after it became public that Trumps lawyer arranged a 1.6 million (yeah, that's the number) hush payment for him.

He allegedly had an affair with a playboy model and impregnated her (while being married, par for the course).
