Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The rank and file consider it a waste of there time.
The officers don't want to load every one up onto a bus, and all the vehicles up onto a train, only to imediatly turn around and bring them back because its a pain in the ass for "Something that will be forgoten about within a week any way"
and the generals are just "You want what in the parade? You know we don't have that right? Who is footing the bill here"
The extra funny part to me is that the general concencus among them is that "The only people who will enjoy this is those that are there to protest" is a common sentiment, and not in a negitive way about protestors either.

This is the key bit, which shows that it's all about Trump upstaging a day that's supposed to be dedicated to veterans to make it all about him. The only reason to surround himself with veterans is to make sure that all the attention and adoration is centred on him instead of the veterans.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading....I don't know, people stopping by to protest the American military wouldn't necessarily be the worst thing ever. '>>
Though I'm mostly saying that because when I see that people in uniform are by far the most-trusted public servants in the US, I start to get reeeeeal worried.
Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.Though I'm mostly saying that because when I see that people in uniform are by far the most-trusted public servants in the US, I start to get reeeeeal worried.
The day makes it bad timing for a parade to inflate Trump's ego (well, worse timing, there's no good time for that)... and also a great day to make protesters protesting the military look as bad as humanly possible.
Honestly, I think the best way for the public to protest the march would be to not show up and hold alternative memorial services for Veterans' Day. That way you kill Trump's beloved crowd size again, and its hard for them to pull the "Why do you hate the military?" card.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. How about a Counter-Parade; you get a bunch of Veterans who will parade down a different path in Washington, and all of them carry protest signs against Trump and his idiotic parade? That way, you can actually protest the stupid parade, but you don't go against the Military because Military Veterans are the ones Protesting it.
I don't know about firefighters, but the police are the third most-trusted institution in America according to Gallup's annual survey.
Military's at #1, with 44% indicating a great deal of trust in the military and 28% indicating 'quite a lot' of trust in the military. Number two is small businesses.

that's an idea
It's just patriotism and having pride in your country, is so much more complex than the right makes it out to be. They say, that anything less than blind, uncritical Jingoism means you hate your country, but isn't opposing or even protesting something because you feel like your country isn't living up to the ideals it was founded on also an expression of patriotism?

I recomend Orwell notes abut nationalism, it separare patrotism(the love for one country which while annoying is just passive) to "Nationalism" which is often a dick mesuring contest against everything else, it pretty much apply well to Trump and is people.
"He wants us to equate pride in out country with pride in Donald J Trump. "
Yeah, THAT worry me, it happen the same in venezuela and is way to tie the system to one person.
Think Anakin "IM THE SENATE!" and you will get it.

It's par for the course with a Narcissist, but it's still rather disturbing.

[mod note: There was no need for this.]
Apparently the GOP's new strategy is "Vote for us, or they'll impeach Trump": https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/04/08/us/politics/trump-impeachment-midterms.html
Yeah, can't see how that can backfire, especially since everyone but his base and Russia hates him...

Then by all means, they should keep saying that.
So, I saw this on twitter and I verified it. Raphael Pitti
, a French Doctor and humanitarian worker in Syria right now, posted yesterday on his Facebook page that he thinks the Chlorine gas attack was a cover for a second attack of something like Sarin. (used google translate because Facebook auto translate is crap.)
We must be sure that the photos and videos I receive are from tonight
[1]
The balance sheet weighs down with families found dead in the cellars, in the second video. The man seems to present convulsions more typical of satin
Everything suggests that during the second attack, chlorine was used to mask the use of sarin at the same time.
6 people died from chlorine and for the moment more than 100 are reported to sarin with more than 1000 victims [2]
It's not really American Politics per say, but mentioning it since Trump did.

I see their logic, midterms are primarily about base enthusiasm so they're hoping that they can use that to motivate their base to go out and vote. Of course considering that this could just motivate hostile independents and Democrats even more it's not the best idea, though I doubt they have any others.

Yes, the impression I get is most of them consider this a tedious waste of their time.
