Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

GOP Rep. Ralph Norman brought a loaded gun to meeting with constituents, saying he won't be a Gabby Giffords: https://www.buzzfeed.com/juliareinstein/congressman-ralph-norman-gun-constituents-gabby-giffords?utm_term=.tga8d3wOL#.psqzpEJn2
Yes, I know it's buzzfeed, but the stupidest part is that he left his gun alone on the table. If somebody there really wanted to kill him, they could have just grabbed it and shot him while he was completely defenseless.
Who famously survived an assasination attempt.
I think he was trying to say he’d fight back if someone came for him. Really though, what a ridiculous macho fantasy. By the time he got his gun out of his pants and found the gunman in a crowded room they’d have already shot him.
They should have sent a poet.Daily Trump tweet dump (I feel like there's a Clever name in there somewhere.
- The United States hasn’t had a Trade Surplus with China in 40 years. They must end unfair trade, take down barriers and charge only Reciprocal Tariffs. The U.S. is losing $500 Billion a year, and has been losing Billions of Dollars for decades. Cannot continue!
- We are sealing up our Southern Border. The people of our great country want Safety and Security. The Dems have been a disaster on this very important issue!
- Lawmakers of the House Judiciary Committee are angrily accusing the Department of Justice of missing the Thursday Deadline for turning over UNREDACTED Documents relating to FISA abuse, FBI, Comey, Lynch, Mc Cabe, Clinton Emails and much more. Slow walking - what is going on? BAD!
- What does the Department of Justice and FBI have to hide? Why aren’t they giving the strongly requested documents (unredacted) to the HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE? Stalling, but for what reason? Not looking good!
- Fire at Trump Tower is out. Very confined (well built building). Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!
- While Security spending was somewhat more than his predecessor, Scott Pruitt has received death threats because of his bold actions at EPA. Record clean Air & Water while saving USA Billions of Dollars. Rent was about market rate, travel expenses OK. Scott is doing a great job!
So today we've got 1 China, 1 Wall, 2 attacking the FBI, and 1 Scott Pruitt, for anyone keeping track.

The flaw with the "Good Guy with a Gun" idea is that someone usually ends up shot/killed anyway, since the Bad Guy usually can draw and get a shot off first before anyone can react. The point of more gun control is to prevent the scenario from happening at all so no one gets shot. Yeah, you can make the argument that bad guys will still find a way to get guns and kill people, but I'm betting that those laws are a lot more reliable than just hoping that there's "Good Guy" who's going to save you. And hoping the good guy doesn't miss, or gets shot first.

Has anyone ever tried doing a serious simulation of a shooting and testing that idea? Like, get a big group of people, with one good guy and one bad guy, and see how many people the bad guy can "kill" with a fake gun before the good guy can stop them. Could be done in a videogame too. I don't know how you'd add gun laws into that simulation though. Maybe expand the group size and increase/decrease the number of people carrying a gun based on expected ownership percentage, but I don't think that would be realistic.

It can work when there's much fewer people and it's clear who has a gun, like armed robbery, but not when it comes to a mass shooting due to the confusion. Even still, simply having a gun yourself won't be effective if the Bad Guy already has you at gunpoint, so you better hope someone else there has a gun they can pull out while said bad guy isn't looking. That kind of scenario doesn't seem very likely, and again is unreliable compared to gun laws that would at the very least guarantee an obstacle to the bad guy getting a gun in the first place.
All that being said, I think that enacting better gun control laws is only one step. I think the overall gun culture in the US needs to be dealt with in some way, which laws alone can't fix.
Ted Nugent wants to murder his political opponents again.

Man, being a far-right reactionary must be an awful state of being; constantly living in fear that Democrats, liberals and communists are out to destroy your country, burn your churches, take away your guns, bring white people to extinction, and turn your kids into gay sex maniacs. No wonder so many of them are angry, miserable, and/or fucking crazy.
i'm tired, my friend![]()
Ted Nugent once shat his pants and wore them for three days before walking into an Army recruitment office so that he could excused from the draft.
I think his opponents will be fine.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."
I was only half-joking about the "getting off on the anger" bit. I do think a lot of these people, on some level, enjoy having someone to hate. Or maybe it's more accurate to say they're hooked on it, like people desperate for a fix.
They think of themselves as the good guys fighting against the forces of "evil". They're living out a heroic fantasy in their twisted little skulls.

Disgusted, but not surprisedAmusingly, #AmericanExceptionalism is trending with Russian Bots.
It's stupid, but it struck me as funny.
The top Hashtags are about Syria (probably denying that Assad has Chemical Weapons and/or denying that todays Chlorine Gas Attack on Civilians didn't happen at all),#MAGA, and #QAnnon as usual, as well as stuff about car being driven into a crowd in Münster Germany. They are also talking about the Trump tower fire.

I see there's been another fire at Trump Tower today. One person seriously injured. Am I right in thinking that's the second fire this year at the tower?

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.
