Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Tennessee legislature has, for a second time, failed to hold a vote on a motion (purely symbolic) that would condemn neo-Nazis and white nationalists. This time round the Republican Speaker introduced the bill, but withdrew after receiving feedback (the nature of which he didn't really specify) from the rest of his party.

Seems in keeping with his usual demeanor - the article about a top aide's resignation mentioned that two other top appointees in the EPA had received raises of $30,000 and $60,000
despite the White House declining to do so. Both appointees also happened to have close ties to Pruitt himself.
Instead, Pruitt reappointed the two aides under a provision of the Safe Drinking Water Act, which lets the EPA administrator hire up to 30 people without having White House or congressional approval, The Atlantic reported.
Pruitt could have full control over the aides' pay by reappointing them in this way, according to The Atlantic.![]()
And from The Hill, Trump is still banging on about how people voted illegally in California despite zero evidence
.
“Not a conspiracy theory, folks. Millions and millions of people. And it’s very hard because the state guards their records. They don’t want to see it.”
On Bernie: someone a few pages back thought quoting his speech would prove his innocence on criticizing Obama, but I didn't see anyone counter that his words totally were just that (even if it might be obvious), so here we go:
First off, he says that the Democratic Party has been a failure and the only reason people don't see that is because of Obama's "charisma". Secondly, he specifically only complements Obama on his charisma and intelligence as it relates to his charisma, something only vaguely related to his performance as president, and it carries the implication that Obama was all fancy talk and didn't do anything substantial to prevent the Democrat's so-called "failure". Finally, he specifically only refers to Obama as a "candidate", simultaneously saying that Obama only ever meant something as a candidate and specifically avoiding mention of his two terms as President, which is more success than Bernie has ever had and will ever have.

What do we want? Death Air!
When do we want it! Now!
... where's The Lorax when you need him.
I am fully aware that's not the exact point of the story even in the movie, but between O'Hare Air and Perri-Air, it feels appropriate.
EDIT: how do i pothole in spoiler i have no memory

Hopefully I'll feel confident to change my avatar off this scumbag soon. Apologies to any scumbags I insulted.Trump is trying to keep Pruitt around because he sees him as a potential replacement for Sessions.

Something from my local front, "Fake News" is turning on its own.
Labrador denounces ‘complete and utter lie’ in ad by pro-Ahlquist group
http://www.idahostatesman.com/news/politics-government/election/article208038719.html
Short version, Labrador, an Idaho congressman and gubernatorial candidate, is accusing his would be challenger in the GOP of lying about his record. One specific claim is that nothing Labrador ever sponsored became law.
That actually is false by the look of it. Labrador authored three bills and sponsored or co-sponsored nearly twenty more that did become laws.
To pothole in spoiler, it's literally the same way as standard. With Spaceballs, you'd need to have {{ on each end of it for the one word to get detected. Perri-Air like so.
And if you want to get really depressed, just try searching for "The Truax" (a summary of which is on the Strawman Ball page), which was the logging industry's response to the Dr. Seuss story.

You can't separate those issues from those outside factors. They existed in part because of the outside factors. Those scandals would be nothing without the news media playing them up
