The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Even if Matt and Trey are Republicans, they clearly know that Trump is a terrible person and President, as they use Mr. Garrison in his place, and while Garri-Trump wasn't the forefront of Season 21, most of the times he was in an Episode he was shown as a stupid, ignorant, bumbling buffoon who ended up nuking Canada all because Kyle told him to and then had to go on the run because of it. Only once did Mr. Garrison do anything Positive that Season (saving Kids from a literal Witch, even though he was a part of the same 'coven' that Witch came from).

That's way better then I can say about the reboot of 'Roseanne'.

From what little I saw, they really hammered in the "both sides are horrible" message. Going "but they thought Trump was worse" doesn't really make that better. That, and the kind of just hated Hillary for years.

Also, if I recall, they said something about not really wanting to make fun of Trump's presidency because "it's too easy" or some other such garbage. It's easy for a reason.

The problem with conservative comedians is they punch down. It’s not just the president or congress they trash, but marginalized people.

[up][up] Season 19 was all about PC Culture and SJW's, and they did make fun of it a lot, but they ultimately made the ultimate SJW (PC Principle) a hero who saved the day while keeping him a SJW. (Season 19 is also probably one of the best Seasons the show has had in my opinion.)

Season 20, even if they hated Hillary, they were basically begging their viewers to vote for her over Trump, because they knew Trump was terrible. The Season was subpar, though.

Season 21, which went back to the Plot-per-Episode format with a few running plots, didn't really do much harping on Liberalism. And even though they didn't want to just constantly pick on Trump because it's easy, they still did (especially in the last Episode where they made him Pennywise/the creature from Stranger Things, who harassed little kids into telling him he was a good President/giving him some food).

[up][up] Conservative comedy often (but not always) just seems mean spirited to me. There's very little comical value of making fun of disadvantaged groups or just calling people "libtards" (what a horrible name) or whatever.

Yeah, I haven't really felt any strong inclination to rewatch South Park since the episode that likens gender affirmation surgery to surgically becoming a dolphin. So the revelation that they're Republicans is perhaps one of the least surprising revelations in years.

Remember when it portrayed Al Gore as a paranoid lunatic obsessed with protecting people from a non-existent threat?

Because that's totally not the kind of joke that reveal more about the person telling it than it does about the person its' about. And it was told over a decade ago.

So they can be as offensive as much as they want as long they call it satire, right? Clearly Satire is immune all criticisms because the people complaining clearly don't get the edgy humour ,and if they're offended then that's their fault!

Regarding satire, this is a general rule that should be better observed.

FBI questions Ted Malloch, Trump campaign figure and Farage ally [1]

American once touted as possible ambassador to EU tells of being detained at Boston airport and subpoenaed by Robert Mueller’s Trump-Russia inquiry.

A controversial London-based academic with close ties to Nigel Farage has been detained by the FBI upon arrival in the US and issued a subpoena to testify before Robert Mueller, the special counsel who is investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

Ted Malloch, an American touted last year as a possible candidate to serve as US ambassador to the EU, said he was interrogated by the FBI at Boston’s Logan airport on Wednesday following a flight from London and questioned about his involvement in the Trump campaign.

In a statement sent to the Guardian, Malloch, who described himself as a policy wonk and defender of Trump, said the FBI also asked him about his relationship with Roger Stone, the Republican strategist, and whether he had ever visited the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where the Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has resided for nearly six years.

In a detailed statement about the experience, which he described as bewildering and intimidating at times, Malloch said the federal agents who stopped him and separated him from his wife “seemed to know everything about me” and warned him that lying to the FBI was a felony. In the statement Malloch denied having any Russia contacts.

Malloch said he had agreed with the special counsel’s office that he would appear before Mueller’s grand jury in Washington DC on 13 April

Of course they know everything about you. That's kind of their job.

On conservative humor and the like; I think a lot of it could be summed up as "everything was fine until these liberals started making up problems that don't exist, so let's trigger them since nothing they complain about is real anyway." So, bullying Chicken Little for being annoying and ruining "muh fun."

Racism isn't real, climate change isn't real, and poverty isn't real to them until the moment they actually feel it, but they're so lacking in empathy they are unable to see how much worse it's been for everyone else for so much longer. They assume that if they're doing fine, everyone else is as well, and if someone asks for more help or for their rights to be protected it's them being selfish and spoiled.

Things have to get really bad before they think they may be wrong. I feel like maybe that happened with Stone and Parker, but I couldn't say for sure. It feels that way from the last season though.

It's spoiled people refusing to give anything up, even when they're giving nothing up because of their pride. You have to be really dense or isolated after this last year to not have second thoughts. I never thought I'd see this many mass shootings and acts of terrorism in such a short time.

While I'm on my tangent, I will never believe the bullshit argument that guns keep people safe. I wish these people would just say what they really mean, that their gun is their big boy toy and they don't want their fun ruined by having them taken away, that they're nothing without a weapon.

One last observation; Conservatives are really driven by a desire to punish. They would rather kill a potential shooter or killer than just preventing any killing. They don't believe in showing any kind of leniency for a crime, even for something like drug use. They don't want to help people, save people. Or keep people safe. What they want is an excuse, a way to justify being cruel or for killing. They want to keep torture not because it may work but because they want to hurt their enemies, because they deserve it. They want revenge and not justice, they want to feel good instead of doing good. And Trump is just that sort if person. Sorry for the rant.
