Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The line from The Truth essentially paraphrases a real quote.
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |A teacher in Texas was recently suspended after mentioning to her students that she has a wife.
The school is saying that she definitely “wasn’t suspended because she tried getting sexual orientation to be included in the school’s anti discrimination policy.”

Frankly, any president should want that. Which is... kind of exactly why it's a terrible idea.
Re: the lesbian teacher, one of the other clickbait links on that site is "Was Stormy Daniels on drugs during her interview?" There really is no depth Trump supporters won't sink to, is there?
Because young children shouldn't know that gay people exist until they're older?

That’s the epitome of privilege right there, not considering armed nazis a threat to your life. - SilaswNobody gets upset when a female teacher says they have a husband, or a male teacher says they have a wife. Pretty much all of my teachers back in school made comments about their spouses. Yet there’s this idea that gay teachers should shut up about their own spouses, because for some reason kids learning that gay people exist is a horrible, vile thing.
x6 The highlight of that video has to be when he points out that the organizers of the rally didn't allow anyone to bring their guns, citing safety reasons. The mental gymnastics required to just blithely accept that while still claiming more guns would make people safer would definitely win gold. A normal person would need two brains to double-think that hard.

I was basing it off of the fact that the teacher’s lawyer said that all she did was mention her family, which included a wife.
Meanwhile, the school made an incredibly specific denial about her “not being suspended for trying to get sexual orientation included in the anti discrimination policies”.
I’m not pulling this shit out of nowhere.
Re: The Daily Show video, there's a bit where a woman is calling the Parkland students crisis actors. The interviewer questions how the shooter managed to specifically target a school then the crisis actors attended... And the woman's response (after a moment of mental stumbling) is to claim he may have just blown the lid off a while new conspiracy.
That's when the know there's just no convincing some people...

Indeed. The sheer Logic Bomb that went off is clearly visible in their expressions. Also that one dude who said everyone should have a gun, but everyone should also have clear backpacks so you can tell if someone has a gun or not. Because cargo pants aren't a thing anymore apparently.

1/ Trump's outside advisers told him he doesn't need a chief of staff or a communications director. While John Kelly has tried to bring order to the policymaking process, Trump has grown frustrated by the long-established West Wing management structure, because it doesn't fit his freewheeling style. Following Hope Hicks' departure, Trump has been open to rethinking the traditional communications director role. He'd like Kellyanne Conway to assume the role. (CNN)

2/ EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt lived in a condo tied to an energy industry lobbyist. The townhouse near the U.S. Capitol is co-owned by J. Steven Hart, who wouldn't say how much Pruitt paid to live there. Hart's firm has lobbied on "issues related to the export of liquefied natural gas." During a December 2017 trip to Morocco, Pruitt pitched "the potential benefit of liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports on Morocco's economy." (ABC News)
3/ Michael Cohen's attorney denied that Trump knew about the $130,000 hush-money payment to Stormy Daniels, saying "the president was not aware of the agreement." David Schwartz added: "At least Michael Cohen never told him about the agreement. I can tell you that." Experts suggest the denial could insulate Trump, but could also undermine the nondisclosure agreement that Daniels signed, which prevented her from disclosing her alleged affair with Trump. (Washington Post)
4/ David Shulkin said he was fired as the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, because he was standing in the way of the Trump administration privatizing the VA, with "some political appointees choosing to promote their agendas instead of what's best for veterans." The former secretary said the "people who want to put VA health care in the hands of the private sector … saw me as an obstacle to privatization who had to be removed." (New York Times / NPR)
5/ Trump's nominee to run the VA has never managed a large bureaucracy. White House physician Ronny Jackson is the doctor who gave Trump a positive physical and mental health assessment in a televised briefing in January. Trump liked the way Jackson handled himself with reporters during the briefing, which played a part in Jackson's nomination for secretary of Veterans Affairs. (Politico / CNN)

6/ The Department of Housing and Urban Development is attempting to reverse federal efforts to enforce fair housing laws. Under Ben Carson, HUD has been freezing enforcement actions against local governments and businesses while sidelining officials who have attempted to pursue civil rights cases. The goal is to roll back the Obama administration's efforts to reverse racial, ethnic, and income segregation in housing and development projects subsidized by the federal government. 7/ Justice Department will investigate the surveillance of Carter Page, a former Trump campaign official. The inspector general has faced increasing political pressure from Republicans in Congress and Jeff Sessions to examine whether law enforcement officials complied with the law and policies while seeking approval from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to wiretap Page. Yeah, I think I encountered it first there too. Looking it up, it seems to date back farther than that, but no one knows who first said it
