Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Meet Steve H
aka Comrade Steve.
Allegedly from Britain, but gets all defensive when you bring up Russia. And absolutely loves Putin. He blocked me for calling him out as the Troll he really is, but didn't realize I have a second account.
It's not Drama, it's Kremlin!

On the sex slave thing, well the next Law and Order: SVU episode is going to be interesting.
But holy shit. Just damn.

Inter arma enim silent leges@ironballs16: There goes my childhood. Apparently, asking for your idols not to be enslaving cult leaders is just setting the expectations too high these days. As for guilt, the victims were branded with her initials, pretty hard to deny participation.
Life is unfair..."I'm not really getting what makes the parkland kids immune to criticism. I've noticed it's "wrong" to disagree with them because "they're just kids." I feel like if they're old enough to support a political agenda and have people rally behind them, they're old enough to be criticized like every other political figure, ever."
That complaint would hold more water if these teens weren't subject to a constant stream of personal attacks, flat-out falsehoods, and character assassinations.
I mean, just a reminder of the junk lobbed at them since the attack:
* The attack was a false flag to take our guns. The survivors are crisis actors.
* They were fed lines by networks who interviewed them. More "proof" that they're actors.
* They can't handle organizing a march or protest by themselves so obviously they're just being co-opted by [insert liberal boogeyman group/individual here]
* They are for forced gun confiscation
* Their generation eats Tide Pods so why listen to them?!
* They should shut up because they don't make the laws.
* One of the teens supposedly wasn't even at school the day of the shooting, so therefore they're a liar and should shut up. (this was debunked, by the way
)
* One of the teens ripped up the Constitution at last weekend's nationwide protest. (also debunked
)
And the latest: Laura Ingraham mocks David Hogg for not getting into certain universities.
This is a so-called professional TV host.
There's a lot more but it would belabor the point. It's one thing to disagree with these survivors' stance on gun control but the amount of vitriol lobbed at them is just ridiculous and disgusting.

I'm sure the Darwin Awards are ripe with some rebuttals, but calling the gun supporters on their hypocrisy on that front might not be a good idea.
but yes the Parkland kids had face a large amount of vitriol that is Disproportionate to their "Crime" of speaking against gun violence. Victim blaming, harassment and being though of as pawns by conspiracy theorists (or inherently Too Dumb to Live because of youtube challenge memes).
the people using that as "proof".

And they were also the target of a Massive Disinformation Campaign, by foreign and local actors. All the conspiracy theories about them made it on the Disinfo Dashboard, because they were picked up by Russian Bots.
This
talks about just one particular botnet, orchestrated by a local actor alone.

So, in February, the Border Patrol announced
it was doing Calexico fencing repairs. They issued a statement
making it clear that it had nothing to do with Trump and his wall, it was just repair work that had been scheduled and planned for quite some time. They state in their announcement that they wanted to be clear that it's got nothing to do with Trump's wall and they want to stop any confusion before it happens.
Cue today, and guess who
is tweeting pictures of his beautiful new wall that is getting built with recently allocated £1.6bn? His leading picture, by the way, is identical to a leading picture used by the second news article I've linked to.

To be fair, the botnets are also pushing suport for them as well.
#marchforourlives was the leading bot push 2 days ago.
The russian's don't care who they suport, they aren't actualy activists, they just want to cause chaos, and the best place to be as an arms dealer is supplying every one.

x6 By the way, don't read the comments on that article if you have problems with high blood pressure. Every time I read something written by some alt-right nutjob, it makes me want to perfect that IP tracking program so that I can hunt them down and punch some reality into them.

I'm not surprised that someone who has consistently been very insistent on their right to wield guns on this thread is mad at the Parkland kids for daring to be upset about firearms and pushing for more gun control. Even going so far as to be upset at their supposed immunity to criticism, when in fact they have been bombarded with a lot of fake bullshit to discredit them as well as the tired old "they're just stupid kids they don't know any better" rhetoric adults throw around when kids say things they don't like.

Disgusted, but not surprisedRe: Attorney-Client Privilege
The privilege is negated if you're talking in the presence of a third party. There has to be a reasonable expectation of confidentiality, and that doesn't exist if there's someone else in the room, even if they also have their attorney with them. There can be other privilege rules in play, but not the basic privilege.
Having an attorney in the room is not a get out of jail free card in any circumstance.

This
is a very good point about Trump trying to issue Pardons to Manafort or Gates.
To accept a pardon for furthering a Conspiracy to Defraud the US would be effectively admitting guilt to felonies in 50 States, half of which have Attorneys General who would file charges.
And this is not American Politics per say, but it's too good to pass up.
Julian Assange is now #StuckInAnEmbassy without Wifi.
That is beautiful.

"Julian Assange is now #Stuck In An Embassy without Wifi."
Oh, this is incredible.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."

Calling it now - her defense will amount to "I was a victim too!" Whether or not it'll be believed remains to be seen.
Ugh - guess even the "Humanist" belief system can't get rid of that shit. If all parties involved are okay with it, that's their jam, but seems like this got tied to progression in the same way a Chainmail Bikini does in games.
Edit - nix that, seems Mack could have some damned strong ground on that defense. Of course, that depends on if she uses it as a defense, as she seems to have drunk deeply of the Flavorade. Per the Rolling Stone link:
