Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

X4 I’m having trouble understanding your post, can you clarify it for me. Could Trump’s lawyer before forced to testify about his conversation with Manafort’s lawyer?

Also all the criticism that had been levied at them is bullshit.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIf anything, I’ve seen the opposite - people who say that they shouldn’t be taken seriously, because they’re minors.
I think Trevor Noah put it best - if they’re old enough to get shot, they’re old enough to have an opinion about getting shot.
Oh God! Natural light! What, do you seriously think I’m saying that there’s an age where getting shot is perfectly fine?
What we’re saying is that being younger than 18 hasn’t protected these kids, so it’s fair that they have a voice in these matters. If there are problems with their proposals, then we can discuss them like any other problems, rather than just dismissing them out of hand.
Oh God! Natural light!![]()
The people shooting them.
Honestly, what sort of absurd argument is that? "They shouldn't be being shot at so they don't deserve to have opinions regarding guns even after being involved in a shooting" just comes across as "they disagree with me so I will discredit them".

Uuuugh, Trump wants to deny residency to any immigrant who uses tax credits: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/trump-proposal-would-penalize-immigrants-who-use-tax-credits-and-other-benefits/2018/03/28/4c6392e0-2924-11e8-bc72-077aa4dab9ef_story.html

So they basically think Infant Immortality actally works in reality?
If criticism of the Parkland kids beyond "they're kids/teens, therefore they are stupid and their argument is invalid" exists I'd love to hear it. For the novelty value if nothing else.

x8 I think there are some actual criticisms that could be directed against them, but all the ones I've seen so far are indeed bullshit. There's also the fact that "less guns" is uncontroversially easier to defend than "more guns".

They should have sent a poet.I mean, there was that one who opposes gun-control, and has been featured on Fox News and the like. Apparently he deserves to be taken seriously, based on his own merits.
That tends to be a thing with situations like this, kids who have liberal positions are stupid and free to be ignored, while those who hold the conservative positions are wise-beyond their years and free thinkers.

Said criticism consists of "learn CPR" and "arm them with rocks" so... lol
I also find it funny how they're not old enough to be allowed an opinion of being pro-gun control, but are old enough to get married off in some parts of the country.

Stormy Daniels' attorney filed a motion to depose Trump and his lawyer, Michael Cohen, about their knowledge of an agreement to pay the porn star $130,000 a week and a half before the 2016 election. In the court filing, Michael Avenatti said each deposition would last for no more than two hours. He also filed a motion seeking a jury trial in no more than 90 days. (CBS News / NBC News)

Literally no one ever has said that they are or should be immune to criticism. Their supporters (and they themselves) have said that the criticism of "they're just kids" is completely ridiculous.
See, it's showing up asking non sequitur questions based on strawmen that make people think you're a troll.

As at that point the lawyers are also party to a crime.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSo in non-Trump related news, the leader of Nxvium (pronounced Nexium) was arrested for sex-trafficking today
.
According to the complaint, Raniere — known within the group as "Vanguard" — oversaw a barbaric system in which women were told the best way to advance was to become a "slave" overseen by "masters." They also were expected to have sex with him and do menial chores for masters, and to keep the arrangement a secret or be publicly humiliated, the complaint says.
"These allegations are most disturbing to me as non-violence is one of my most important values," the letter said.
The complaint said that many victims participated in videotaped ceremonies where they were branded in their pelvic area with a symbol featuring Raniere's initials.
"During the branding ceremonies, slaves were required to be fully naked, and the master would order one slave to film while the other held down the slave being branded," the complaint says.
Investigators said Raniere preferred exceptionally thin women, so "slaves" had to stick to very low-calorie diets and document every food they ate. As punishment for not following orders, women were forced to attend classes where they were "forced to wear fake cow udders over their breasts while people called them derogatory names," or threatened with being put in cages, court papers say.
Raniere left the United States late last year after The New York Times reported the stories of some women who defected from their secret sorority and the government began interviewing potential witnesses. He sought to cover this trail by using encrypted email and ditching his phone, court papers say.
Safe, Sane, and Consensual this wasn't, from the sound of things, and it included some decidedly high-profile folks, which is why I'm sharing the details on here. Even worse - these allegations first came to light in 2012, so we can only hope that law enforcement was gathering evidence in those ~6 years.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"![]()
I mean, it depends on if Trump does decide to pardon them, which, considering Trump, could go either way. I definitely think Mueller would throw that on top of the obstruction of justice evidence pile if it happens, and attorney client privilege gets tossed out the window since the lawyers would also get implicated.

So what you're saying is that there was a Secret World of Allie Mack?

Who told you they were immune to criticism? They just happen to be making much more cogent arguments than the people currently criticizing them.
