Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Very good point.
Apparently the Dossier alleges at least two incidents, "Sex Parties" (whatever that means) in Saint Petersburg [1]
, and the Golden Showers incident in Moscow. [2]
It also says that Trump had paid Bribes to silence the people involved. This seems to support that assertion.
Also, due to the fact that the payoff may have violated campaign finance laws, it could give Mueller possible leverage over Cohen.

The more time you spend around guns, the more time you spend reading about them, looking at them, handling them, the more you are aware of the dangers of firearms.
Therefore as someone who reads about guns a lot and has fired two I am in favor of gun control.
I repeat my stance: as long as they don't ban guns entirely, I'm fine with whatever process they make.
I did a little skeet shooting class at the main L.L. Bean Campus in Freeport Maine once. We used shotguns, and spent most of the time talking about Gun Safety before we even picked one up.
It wasn't my thing, but I could see why people enjoy it. (I much prefer Archery, it's less noisy, and actually a really safe sport, provided you aren't dumb about it.)

Honestly, the pro-gun people fucked themselves. For thirty-plus years, they kept screaming about any sort of gun control measures, and prevented the CDC from even studying gun violence, and backing the NRA and all its bullshit. Massacre after massacre, death after death, the situation was still the same "No gun control!" "Shall not be infringed!" "I have the right to this!" etc etc. Meanwhile, the bodies keep piling up, and the public gets angrier and angrier, and until finally, Parkland happens.
Now you have a tidal wave of young activists, in the internet/social media era, along with a growing blue Tsunami against a monster of a President, who's shown repeatedly that he doesn't give a flying fuck about anyone but himself, and they're using this to start a movement which had MILLIONS of young generation Z marching, a good chunk of whom got registered to vote. Even now, Marco Rubio on twitter is being a clown, saying he disagrees with gun control, despite the evidence flying in his face that his party is about to get fucked come November.
Now, because of their stubbornness in not wanting any gun control, long term when all of these people start consistently voting for politicians who WILL listen, the Second Amendment may not be formally repealed, but laws around the country will mean it's de-facto doesn't exist anyhow.
New Survey coming this weekend!
And this isn't just about School shootings. This is about making sure guns are less likely to get into the hands of people who would misuse them anywhere, or would pose a threat to themselves and those around them.
Like for example, this idiot right here.

That's why many veterans and service members support gun control, even politically conservative ones. In basic marksmanship training you don't even get to fire your weapon until a week or two in, and the number one lesson they impress upon you is that you don't point your weapon at anything you don't intend to kill. They make sure you know just how dangerous a rifle is.
In fairness to her, that's a very safe way to carry a gun and it looks like she has it in an IWB holster down there. She is a total idiot though.

They should have sent a poet.
One of the most powerful pro-gun statements I've read was from a former army medic, who knew the damage intermediate rifle rounds could cause all too well. He supported the Parkland students wholeheartedly. I'm not sure if it was an NYT column or an r/army post, but it really struck me.
Others are from the veterans-turned-teachers, who have no wish to see their new surroundings turned into another war zone.

As you pointed out, knowing what a weapon does makes one more likely to not want said weapon doing its thing near them.
When I did my marksmanship training (a very long time ago) we got a hands-on lesson in the form of a negligent discharge on our range. It was not a pretty injury.
I think we need more statements from people like that, just to impress the reality of the situation on the public. Guns are not toys, they're not a joke, there's nothing casual about them. There doesn't need to be any pathos or anything, just explain what these things are and what they actually do.

They should have sent a poet.Hey, remember those articles that were floating around last year or so that said Gen Z was going to be the most conservative generation of voters since the Fifties? Ones like this?
After the Parkland backlash, I don't think that's happening. This new demographic is untapped, virgin soil for the Democrats. If we start coming out as the resoundingly pro-gun control party, we could bring out successive graduating classes of young voters to the polls.

Of course not. I'm from a town with a large Latino population in the People's Republic of Massachusetts
, so my experience may be a bit different than many others, but as someone who has just gotten out of high school herself last year, I can say that we are a pretty liberal, and accepting bunch.

The GOP is rife with bigots and/or psychopaths who are in it for the potential short-term gains. Looters. They are akin to people brought in to a company as an executive hire (CEO, VP, etc.) because their credentials con the company into thinking they can help them, only to screw the company over and leave in a few years with a golden parachute as the company falls apart.

Disgusted, but not surprised@M84 I have the same feelings, I'd be surprised if any amendment gets repealed at all, with all the civic religion and idolatry surrounding the constitution, but it would be a net positive if the students are able to get rid of the second amendment (and update the first to include hate speech laws).
If all goes well, November might be the beginning of a watershed for America.

I would say there's enough justification to be cautiously optimistic right now. Always keep in mind that things can go south, or even turn out better than you originally thought possible, but the default is in our favor right now, and it doesn't seem like that's going to change by the time it's November.

I kinda want his guns, he’s certainly showing traits of being a child abuser (threatening to make his kids homeless if they express political views he disagrees with) and I don’t think child abusers should be allowed guns.
Maybe he’s just pretending to be a child abuser, but I figure I’ll take him at his word.
